    1. [TMG] Fwd: Recurring Problem w/TMG v9.x in Windows 10
    2. Greg Vaut
    3. Rather often when working in TMG I do something that causes an "Open File" selection window to open. This window opens automatically to C:\Program Files (x86)\The Master Genealogist v9 and indicates "Files of type: Table/DBF (*.dbf)". I assume that whatever I have done is making TMG look for a DBF file, none of the *.dbf files available in this window (at C:\Program Files (x86)\The Master Genealogist v9) work. Each time I select a file and click "OK" the file select window just opens again. Clicking "Cancel" closes the window, but it immediately re-opens. Clicking on the "X" in the upper right of the window does nothing. All the rest of TMG is inaccessible while this window is open. The only way I can get out of this is to do a [Ctrl] [Alt] [Del] to get Task Manager and close TMG from there. I have not been able to figure out what key combination I may be typing that causes this window to open, but it happens several times in a multi-hour work session and is pretty annoying. Can anyone help me understand: 1. What I might be doing to make this happen, and 2. If there are any actions I can take to close the window without having to go Task Manager to kill TMG? Thanks for any help! Greg

Not sure of the problem, Lindsay??? That column is only visable when using TMG. The Age associated with an event is only ever output in the narrative for a tag if the sentence for that tag includes an Age sentence variable. Suppressing that output by customizing those sentences is easy. So only the person using TMG (which is usually only you) will ever see this column. Yes you "can" not include a Date for those tags, but often the Date for those events is desired in the narrative of that event so that is usually not a viable option. Of course you can not include the Age column in the Person View <grin>. But otherwise, as Terry suggests, that column is either on or off for all events of every kind. Personally I don't find the Age incongruous. All one need do is think of it as "This event occured on the 104th anniversary of his birth" which can be interesting. But that is only my opinion. Michael

Having a need to Reindex, Optimize, or Validate File Integrity should not be the only reason to run these functions. These should be run periodically as they organize the files in your project and make them more efficient. I usually run these functions every week or so. I have no set time, it just depends on how much data I am entering or editing. There have been times when I have not run the Maintenance functions for a month or so (very rare) because I have not done any work with the data (though I may have generated reported during that time). But, I also have run them a every few days when I have done a lot of data entry and editing. Lately, I suspect I run them more often than I used to when my question of when was the last time is answered with "I don't remember." <g> Lee

    3. This is great news. When I started scanning bazillions of paper source documents into Evernote, I decided to tag each note with the ID numbers of the people of focus in the documents. I thought one of those processes changed the ID numbers and I had to decide if I would be ok with that should I someday be forced to re-index my database. I have not had any problems that would indicate the need to optimize, so I haven’t done it. As Michael said, neither of these will change ID numbers. You have to explicitly do that. There are two ways:. Both start with the Renumber People option from the Tools Menu.. You may choose to 'Renumber one person', enter the ID# of the person to be renumbered and the new ID#. Note that this is is _not_ a way to combine (merge) persons. There are various reasons for renumbering persons -- most are personal preference. The "To" number must be presently unused. You can press [F2] to get a list of unused ID#. The second option is to 'Renumber people in the selected data set'. When you select this option, TMG will renumber the data set so that there will no be any unused ID#s. For example suppose you have five persons in the data set numbered 1, 3, 5, 7, and 10. After the data set renumbering, the persons will be numbered 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 respectively. This option minght be used if you have merged two or more data sets (maybe two GEDCOMs from other users), have then merged the "duplicate" persons and have no interest in how any of the persons are numbered. This more or less gets rid of the "unused" ID#s sprinkled through the data set. Lee
