It's probably not an error. I agree with Sally. Its probably name and relationship sources that are printing. When you get to the report definition, click Options, then Sources. Uncheck or deselect both "Include Name Sources" and "Include Relationship Sources." That should do it. I often print a Journal Report to mail to non-computer relatives as it gives a pretty complete picture of the person's life and events. The sources are included as End Notes which print in numerical order following the Report. Susequently, there is a small raised italic number placed in the text as reference to the source number. Recently, this source number is repeated for same tag, sometimes 2, 3 times. As an example, Source of his full name & birth might appear in the text thus: John Carlton McLynn,28,29 b. 1881 Fulton Co, Georgia28, 29, 28, 28 Source #28 is from WW1 Draft Registration Card and #29 is his newspaper obituary. Similar errors randomly occur for other tags and other sources for other people. This same error also occurs when printing a Descendants Indented Chart. Thinking perhaps the problem occurred due to the word processor, I saved the report using both WordPerfect X7 & MS Word 2010, and finally RTF. All three yielded the same repeated values, so I assume the problem originated in TMG v9.05, not the word processor. My OS is Windows 10/64. Has anyone else seen this problem? or know the cause? I only noticed it showing up in the past few months, but it very frustrating. Cannot imagine what is causing it. I've found that, particularly in the original name, because of the way I input. It is connected to the name, to the link with father and link with mother, because I added the child after the parents on the one input template. So I'm going back and deleting the parent-child source, leaving no source for those links, thus removing the repetitions. Oops! I forgot that rootsweb strips email addresses. See the pinned forum post here: http://www.whollygenes.com/forums201/index.php?/topic/15915-tmg9-final-installers-v905/
Brian Cole asked: > How do I get an unlock key for v. 9.05? If you have a key for an earlier sub-version of Version 9, that key will work for the final sub-version of Version 9. If not, then you need to purchase a key for this final Version 9. I believe you can still buy a TMG9 license over the Internet by contacting Harry Goegebeur: Harry.Goegebeur@genea.be Hope this helps, Michael
Dear Lee, Thank you for the walk thru in Fixing my TMG. I was not smart enough to follow you instruction. I got more confuse of what to do. Believe I’m in need for someone in the TMG field to take over my pc to get this going again. As I have explain that I’m about to turn 90 and computer knowledge isn’t my thing. Sending a copy of my note to you and hope I can get going on my research. First I want to thank you for all your help. But, the usual tech can often make things worse if they don't understand it. >First I changed to windows 10. Started to have a problem right away. This places I mentioned above would be good. In the meantime - First, let us make sure that your data is preserved as well as possible. I would suggest going to Staples, Best Buy or some other store that selles computers/accessories. Buy an external hard drive that connects to you computer using the USB port. The sixe should be the same as or larger than the largest drive on your computer. But, probably no larger than 1 Terabyte. These external drives are easily connected to your computer (desktop or laptop). Just unpack it, and connect using the USB cable that should be provided. This should start the installation process (check the encloised instructions). After the installation (usually automatic) is complete, it is just like having a second (third or later) hard drive. If you have two hard drives already, then they are call C:/ and D:/. Adding this new drive will then give you an E:/ drive. If you only have the C:/ drive then the new one will be the D:/ drive. That is, the new drive will take the next unused drive letter - D, E, F, G, etc. With that installed, there are basically two options. One is to make a full backup of your drive(s) to the new drive. This can take MANY hours. But you can be sure that nothing is left that you might want and can't find in the future. The other is to just copy the TMG files. This would not include any files in the Program Files folder of the C:/drive. Under normal circumstances, this would basically be three folder trees (a folder and sub-folders, sub-sub-folders, etc. under that). These are: 1. The Shared Program Data folder 2. The User Program Data folder 2. The User Data folder. If you just copy TMG-related folders, I suggest copying the above TMG folders and data to the new drive. This may take a hour or so. An easy way to do this is open two instances of Windows File Explorer. Open one to the new Drive. Open the second and browse to the various folder containing TMG file/data files. Then highlight a folder to be copied, right-click and select Copy. Then move the cursor to the other File Explorer window (the new drive), and right-click on the large panel at the right (may have "This folder is empty" displayed. Now select Paste. After the copy/paste if finished, copy/paste the others. The main folder needing copying is the (#3) User Data Folder. The (#2) User Program Data files also have your data, but it is not project data. It contains Custom Layouts, Custom colors, and some other user-defined files. The loss of these is more an irritation as they can be easily re-created. But, having them backed-up saves that time. The (#1) Shared Program Data files are somewhat similar to the #2 file as they are mostly files that are program defined. Some of these can be user-modified (through TMG) such as dictionary files, language files, etc. If you have custom Languages, button, graphics, or frames, you will want to save these in a backup. You might look around and see if there are other files that were moved by the tech out of these three folders. Copy these to the new drive also. If you copy files that aren't needed, that won't hurt. Now having backed up the data files to the new drive, you can concentrate of fixing your problem. The first thing is to make sure that you have your correct licensing information for TMG v9. In TMG, select Help=>Technical Support from the top menu and click on the [Trouble Rerport] button in the Technical Support window lower left. Click on [Yes] to open the report in your word processor. I would suggest that you save this is some safe place for the future as it give the licensing data you you need to unlock TMG for any future installation/re-installation. You might name it as "TMGv9 License data". I have a copy of the TMG v9 installation file, my licensing data, and some backup files on a thumbdrive as well as on an external drive like above). I update the backup files weekly. This way, if my computer just plain quits, I can continue almost as if nothing happened. The next this is to uninstall TMG. This process does not remove data files, but the backup above does make sure that they are available in case something is wrong somewhere in the current TMG installation. Now, in File Explorer, find the TMG installation file and double-click on it to re-install TMG. If you did a custom installation before you can re-select those locations or you can just allow the default installation. If the installation uses the same locations, you should be able to open the one project that you were able to get going before. As for the others, try them and see what you can do. Any that won't open will have to be restored from a Backup. Sorry for the long posting. You may already know some of this, but more said now can save time later. Let me know if I can help further. How do I get an unlock key for v. 9.05?
Interesting -- thanks for reporting this, Bob. I'm also using BitDefender with Windows 10 and haven't seen this problem. I don't *think* I've ever done anything to mark the TMG files as 'safe', but I'm not finding it straightforward to check on that. A few days ago I posted a note saying I had problems with TMG on a new laptop with Windows 10. When I opened TMG, I got a message that access to the file _programstartlog.log was denied and when I opened the previously used project, I got the message that access to the file registercontrol.log was denied. I was also unable to save any changes in my project. It turned out to be a problem with Bitdefender which had classified TMG logs and TMG as ransomware. Bob McVicar
FYI: When my computer was upgraded to Win 10 1703 a couple of weeks ago, I had an issue with TMG 9. TMG would open and load my project or the Sample project normally. But at the first click on any button or menu item TMG would quit. The fix was Run_as_administrator. I had to reenter my registration information. So far, no new problems. Fran Pillsbury
TMG 9.05 is inconsistent in how it handles punctuation of the Citation Detail in Journal Report endnotes if the CD ends with a quotation mark. All is OK if the CD is the final source element in the FF or SF template that specifies the format of the endnote output. But in templates in which the CD is followed by other elements such as Memo or Repository, the ending period of the CD is placed before or after the ending quotation mark depending on whether the Memo or Repository element has content that prints. If you never use quotation marks in your CDs it's not an issue, but if you do, say for the title of an article when the source is a newspaper or book, you may need to deal with this inconsistency. As an example consider a source that has the FF template as follows: [TITLE]<, [DATE]><. [CD]><. [MEMO]>. If the CD is enclosed in quotation marks and the source memo has some content the endnote is like this: 36. Correspondence from National Portrait Gallery, London. "CD text with quote marks". Memo text. If the source memo is empty the endnote is like this: 36. Correspondence from National Portrait Gallery, London. "CD text with quote marks." Note that the position of the period following the CD has shifted, which I believe is incorrect. I have tried various combinations of including punctuation within the template to avoid this problem but have not found a way to get consistent results. The workaround that I have adopted is to modify my source templates to always place CD as the last element. The default templates that came with TMG already have a mix of the CD being before or after the Memo and Repository elements, and I don't see any great value in retaining the defaults. Placing the CD as the last element causes the period of a CD that ends with a quotation mark to always be before the quotation mark, which is the result I prefer.

I did this with Windows 10 Pro earlier this year with no issue. I installed it "single user" rather than "all users". I can't remember whether or not I set it as "run as administrator". Following the recent query on re-numbering data sets, (or projects ?) I decided to renumber several small projects taken from one original project which I now know are completely unrelated. When I go to renumbering people, I am unable to change the selected dataset from the original dataset from which these separate groups were taken. What have I missed ? Thanks Margaret Whitaker

Thanks for your replies as below. I had rather expected that I'd have to live with it, and that's certainly not a big problem. Terry and David -- I do want the dates, so sort dates only is not really a solution. Michael -- problem is just that 'non-real' ages appearing in the Person View looks odd to me. Narratives are not an issue. Thanks again, Lindsay Graham On 11/6/17 05:59, Michael J Hannah wrote: > Not sure of the problem, Lindsay??? > > That column is only visable when using TMG. I recently purchased a new laptop with Windows 10 and installed TMG 9.05 apparently with no problems. However when I open TMG, I get a message that access to the file _programstartlog.log is denied and when I open the previously used project, I get the message that access to the file registercontrol.log is denied. If I click on ignore in both cases, I am able to browse in my project, but I am unable to save any changes in it. Are there some settings in Windows that I have to change? Bob McVicar

When I go to renumbering people, >I am unable to change the selected dataset from the original dataset from >which these separate groups were taken. What have I missed ? Are you saying that you want to renumber person 1:123 to person 2:123 where the number before the colon in each case is the appropriate data set ID#. You can't. You can only renumber a person's ID# within the data set in which they are located. If you want persons removed from one data set and placed in another then you must Move Person(s) (from the Edit Menu) them from the current data set to a different, existing data set within that project. There are a couple of other options. Both tend to be more work, but there may be valid reasons for using them. One way is to Copy them to a different, existing data set and then delete them from the original (Copy Person(s) from the Add Menu). This is essentially the same as the move option except that the person(s) remain in the original location and must be deleted if you no longer wanted them there. One reason for using this option is that the original remains the same. You can then see if the person(s) in the new data set are what you want before removing them from the original. Note that in bother the above options, the target data set must exist before starting the Move or Copy process. If it doesn't, you can easily [Add] a data set in the Data Set Manage (File Menu). Another option is to copy the person(s) using the List of People (LOP) report and its Secondary Output option to create a new data set. This is essentially the same as the Copy Person(s) above except that the new data set is automatically created (there is no option to select an existing data set). This removes the added step of having to create the data set before the Copy Person(s) option. Once you have the person(s) in the 'new' data set, you can then Renumber that 'new' data set. If you copied to the 'new' data set, the 'old' will remain in the 'old' data set with their original ID#(s). Whatever is done to one data does not affect another. Again, if they were copied, and you no longer want them in the 'old' data set then you must Delete them from the 'old' data set (a one at a time process). This step is unnecessary after a Move process. You just need to decide which is best for you. For one, two, or a few person changes, I'd probably go with the Move method. For more persons, I might consider one of the copy methods is better as it give me a chance to see if what I have done is right (maybe I missed someone(s) or copied to many). Again, the downside of copying (over moving) is that I may need to go back and delete the copied person(s) from the 'old' data set -- no big deal for a _small_ number of people, but.... Lee

Unfortunately, /which/ of the many tables isn't being identified. >I have not been able to figure out what key combination I may be typing >that causes this window to open, but it happens several times in a >multi-hour work session and is pretty annoying. Do you have any sort of background backup process running or virus scanning running? TMG (Visual FoxPro) opens and closes project tables as needed -- any time you open a new detail window you are opening multiple tables. If a backup or virus scanner locks a file, VFP might get confused and be asking you to identify the file that it couldn't open normally. -- bieber.genealogy@earthlink.net Dennis Lee Bieber HTTP://home.earthlink.net/~bieber.genealogy/
