    3. Will Second Copy automatically update the exhibits folders in the backup location Terry or does it have to create a new set of folders each time? (I can't check this at the moment because, Murphy's Law again, my Second Copy 8 has stopped opening on my PC. Have written to their support to try and work out why as it was fine until just recently.) The problem I have if SC has to create the folders afresh each time is that my Exhibit folders are very large - 73GB and it takes up to 2 hours to copy them each time. (I keep both my originals and my TMG formatted versions in the folders. I tried to separate these but ended up wasting many hours trying to find and compare versions of an exhibit, etc) Ann -----Original Message----- From: TMG [mailto:tmg-bounces+annmcarson=gmail.com@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Terry Reigel Sent: Monday, 26 June 2017 9:04 AM To: The Master Genealogist Rootsweb Email List Subject: Re: [TMG] Error Message I can't find in Archives - 109 FRMEXHIBIT.CONIMGLIST.RAITEM.RCLOADIMAGE_ASSIGN On 6/25/2017 6:51 PM, Ann M Shepherd wrote: > Thanks Earl. This is a question that appears to surface more and more and can be dealt with in an almost infinite number of ways in TMG depending on the user's needs and expectations. It might be nothing more than changing the Sex Flag, Name-??? Tags or it might be treated more fully. Part of the answer will depend on how much the user wants to show the history of the individual -- that the person began life one way and then changed including all the who, what, when , where, and maybe why information. Naturally, some of this information will be more private than others, so that also needs to be taken into consideration. With this in mind, I think adding a dated Name-Chg Tag for the new name using the Tag Memo and Tag Sentence to reflect the circumstances and explain the change. There might also be other Tags, such as "Illness" (a Note Tag or a Custom Tag -- Surgery?) reflecting more detail as to the medical side. There may also be other Tags reflecting the legal side. The question will also include whether to leave the original Name Tag as Primary or make the Name-Chg Tag Primary. The birth Name Tag could be dated with the Birth Tag, and the Primary Name the new one. These are just a few possibilities. Again, it depends on the user, how much/little is known or desired to be entered. The individual's desire for privacy should also be considered. For many users, the basic facts will be sufficient; for a few, there will be more in depth coverage. It depends on the user, the individual, and the situation. Lee

    3. Dale, In my last response to you I told you that you would get varying views on your question, and you have. I agree with Richard on his main points but differ about some details. Please see below. But I'm with Richard - my tags record my conclusions, and unless they are significant, any conflicts in details are recorded in the Citation Detail of individual Citations. > > The big question hear is how lumpy or splity you want to be with your > sources. However, if you create a source list (bibliography) in reports, if you frame your Bibliography Template so the output is the same for different sources (as the default ones do) you only get one listing for all sources with the same output. > > The second part is if you want to create a 'CENSUS' tag for everyone > you have census information for. As far as a genealogical sketch of a > person, I find CENSUS tags don't really make sense, as they aren't > really events in the persons live that had any sort of impact. Here I differ with Richard. If you use the default census tags I suppose he is right. But if you create a census tag like the ones discussed in my article which I referred you to in your last post so they list everyone in the household they provide a snapshot of how the household was composed, where they were living, and in many cases lifestyle details like renting or owning, value of the home, etc. If the family moved between censuses I think it helps the narrative if you add Moved tags to convey what you know about how that happened. > > Again for this, YOU need to decide how to do this. This keeps the information that > they were together on the census. Richard makes an important point, not just with regard to entering census tags but in the entire question of entering census data. You originally asked "Could someone point me to a step-by-step on entering census data?" The answer is no. Nobody can tell you how to enter census data because there is no right way to do it. You have to decide how you want it recorded and how you want it to output. Once you decide, we can help with details about how to accomplish what you want. Terry Reigel

    3. Not only am I indebted to John for his fabulous utility, TMGU, but over the weekend he helped me set up my website and a password-protected sub-folder for my cousin who was unable to use either the CD OR download the zipped SS file I sent him (long story). Not only did John help me through registering my domain, but also in setting up the Main Site Page and its protected sub-folder. Within a few weeks, I hope to upload my first family file . . . . once I finish proofing and probably correcting those blasted 2,242 "Texas Deaths" database citations. All this is not difficult, but would have been hard for me to figure out without his inestimable assistance. He even showed me a faster way to access my SS output from my Apple side which has made an enormous difference in the time it takes to review changes. Therefore, if you are hesitating about outputting your hard work for either public or private use on the internet via Second Site, don’t be. John will help you and you’ll find, as I have, that it’s well worth the time/effort/expense (who knew you’d have to purchase the name of your domain?). Regards, Toby

While most of the results of this can be overridden with custom sentences, there are a few spots which can't, mostly with parent/child relationships, which can lead to a few issues. One big one is that the flag controls what type of parent the person is (father or mother), and for chart/report purposes, you can have only one Father and one Mother. If the person eventually 'Has a child' (likely adopted, as medicine isn't that good yet, but many people want to report that sort of family relationship) then the only way to show this (assuming their partner is male) is to make their sex flag be Female. -- Richard Damon

You really should create, and then cite tags/events for all the information provided by the census. You DON'T need to create duplicate tags for information you have from other sources, even if it differs slightly (within the reasonable error for a census record). You don't need to cite the census (or possibly cite and exclude) if you have other 'better' sources for that information. (My personal feeling is tags should represent MY conclusion of reality, based on looking at all the evidence, with perhaps details of the differences between sources noted in the citations) The big question hear is how lumpy or splity you want to be with your sources. I personally am the ultimate splitter for things like a census, with a separate source for each household in each year, so that I can attach an image of the census to the source. This does generate a very long source listing, so others will prefer to lump more records together (perhaps all records from a county or state into a single source) to the extreme of making just a single source for US Federal Census. (if you lump, you need to add information into the Citation Details defining the particular record you are using, so others can find it), The second part is if you want to create a 'CENSUS' tag for everyone you have census information for. As far as a genealogical sketch of a person, I find CENSUS tags don't really make sense, as they aren't really events in the persons live that had any sort of impact. The DO provide a good research log for the person, so I do enter them for people and then have second site pull them out of the main narrative part and create a chart of them at the end as part of the research notes forperson. Again for this, YOU need to decide how to do this. The two main options are a separate CENSUS tag per person with them as the principal, which has the advantage that it will be able to export to a GEDCOM, or you can make a single CENSUS tag for a household, normally with the Head of Household as the Principal, and the rest as witnesses (perhaps the spouse of the HoH as P2). This keeps the information that they were together on the census. One modification is to create a 'CENSUS PERSON' to represent the census and attach that to the Census tag also (the Census Person representing what ever level of lumping you want), which provides a very good way to get the list of people referred to by that census. -- Richard Damon

However use of census data, and especially what you enter in a Census Tag, is probably the area in which there is the most diversity among TMG users. You will receive lots of different ideas. > > Is there a way to print a list of each individual using a particular > source? Remember that Sources are cited in Tags in TMG, not for people. You can get a list of the Tags in which a given Source is cited using the list of citations report, as Lee described. You can arrange the output to show the Principals entered in each of those Tags, but you are likely to see multiple Tags listed for each person. Terry Reigel

It's easier to be more detailed on specifics. As for screen shots, they can't be posted here. But with a few exceptions, each Tag Type has the same general entries. A lot depends on what you are trying to record. If you are using the census to support a person's birth date (based on the age in the census) or birth place then you would use the Birth Tag entering the calculated birth year and birthplace. A marriage would be similar although only a couple of censuses give you information that can be used to calculate a marriage date. The rest would only support just the marriage itself. Of course, the Relationship Tags (parent-child) would use the Source Citation for the census(es) in which the child is listed with the parent(s). You can add an Occupation Tag showing the person's occupation. The occupation would be entered in the Tag Memo. You may want to enter the occupation with the appropriate "a", "an", or "the" so that narrative reports read grammatically correct. Of course, you can alter the Tag Sentence to use Split Memo entries to facilitate Llist type reports that sort by the occupation itself rather than by the article. If you are wanting to record the fact that the person is on the census at a place then you would enter a Census Tag. In such a case, there are basically two ways to do this. One is to add a Census Tag for each person as Principal One. The other way is to enter the Head of Household as Principal One and the remainder of the household as Witnesses (a variation is to enter the wife as Principal Two instead of as a Witness). In all these cases, you would add the appropriate Source Citation. There may be other information to be gained from a census, but I can think of them off-hand. Ask more specifically and we can answer that. >Is there a way to print a list of each individual using a particular source? Yes, use the List of Citations report and select the "citations for a specific source" filter. When you create the report, enter the Source # in the blank and click [OK]. Lee

    3. Hi Terry Thanks very much for this but I'm reasonably certain that all my exhibits are external. In Preferences-Program Options-Exhibits I have a check mark on "New image exhibits are added as links to external exhibits". If I test by using TMGU to "Convert internal images to external" log only, then zero internal images are found. Is there a limit to external exhibits that anyone has found yet? If so, the solution is to use external exhibits, which is recommended by most "experts." Terry

    3. I also use Carbonite (and OneDrive) I have had this problem in the past. Simply "PAUSE" Carbonite when creating Gedcoms and all will be well. with kind regards Derek Bandy -----Original Message----- From: TMG [mailto:tmg-bounces+derek=bandy.org@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of ChiMacher Sent: 24 June 2017 18:38 To: tmg@rootsweb.com Subject: [TMG] GEDCOM Creation Error TMG Users: I have been following the GEDCOM creation error thread with some interest. I use Carbonite to back-up my files on a daily basis. Can a program such as Carbonite, which is constantly running when my computer is on, create problems when, for example I create a GEDCOM and save in my TMGv9/Export file? If so I can block Carbonite from backing up the TMGv9/Export file. I'm looking forward to your input, so I can get in front of this possible issue. If so I can block Carbonite from backing up the TMGv9/Export file. ANY backup program including cloud-based service occasionally lock files and/or folders during the time the program is backing up that file and/or folder. TMG requires exclusive use of its files and folders. when it is running. The upshot is that when you designate the folders for your backup program/service to backup, do NOT include any TMG folder. Instead, develop a routine that makes sure you do TMG backups and immediately copy the TMG Backup SQZ file to a folder included in the backup program/service. Lee

It has been recommended for some time that automatic backups that can run constantly not be allowed to access the folders containing your working Project Files, your backups, or your exports. Either make backups and exports to folders not scanned by those systems and then manually copy them to other folders, or if you can set the system to only work when you are not actively using TMG. The cloud backup I use operates only in "continuous" mode, so I use another copy program to copy all my changed files once daily, when my computer is not otherwise in use, to a separate drive. Then I let the cloud system backup only that drive. Terry Reigel

    1. [TMG] Error Message I can't find in Archives - 109 FRMEXHIBIT.CONIMGLIST.RAITEM.RCLOADIMAGE_ASSIGN

    3. Hi All I've not been on the list for a long time as I'm working pretty much full-time on writing, reporting, completing data collection etc. I have been adding (ie linking) many photos and exhibits to my project during this time. I almost always use jpgs or some pngs sized at around 500-900 high. A number of times recently I've received the following message and can't find anything similar in the mailing list archives: File d:\...\ann\documents\the master genealogist v9\projects\annscomplete2016_i.fpt is too large 109 FRMEXHIBIT.CONIMGLIST.RAITEM.RCLOADIMAGE_ASSIGN I get the Abort Retry Ignore screen but none of those options help. Whichever I use ultimately I have to close TMG down - or it closes itself. Does anyone know what this message means or what I need to do please? I frequently run VFI-Optimise-VFI. My project is large (65,000 individuals) and I have over 22,000 exhibits, all external. I've asked before on this list whether TMG has an limits for exhibits and no-one seems to have found one yet. I've always wanted to keep all my data in the one project but am wondering whether I need to split things up now? Any views on that would be much appreciated. I'm reluctant so would very much like to maintain just one project if possible. Thank you Ann
