Well it had to happen to me sooner or later. Just as I was backing up my database after an input session, my computer crashed. The backup file saved to disk. When I got back into Windows after the crash, I tried to open TMG and of course, my project file is corrupt and gives me the “is not a valid data file” or project file or whatever it says message. I tried to restore from that new backup but it won’t read it either. I then went to the next most recent backup file and it looks like it will restore that one. I stopped the wizard when it asked me if I was sure I wanted to restore over my data file, or some such wording. (I believe this was step 3: Data) Not sure what the right answer is and I think just to be on the safe side, I would like to restore the project to a new name. I didn’t see a place on that screen of the wizard to specify a new name. This is the first time this has happened to me and I’m nervous about the possibility of losing 20+ years of data. I am scrupulous about backing up after every input session (or during sessions) and then sending those files to Dropbox. I’m using v9.05. I opened another project file and looked through the help and I don’t think I'm seeing the answer to my questions, although there is something about an overwrite warning and making a copy of the project file first with a new name and then restoring to that. Does the restore process require an underlying project file in order to work? I’d like to know what I can expect from the rest of the wizard. And if there are any gotchas I need to be aware of. Thanks for your help. Robin in Short Pump

Make sure the program that is generating the GEDCOM is using 7-bit ASCII or ANSEL. In the meantime -- open the GEDCOM using a plain text editor (NOT a word processor). Visually scan the file looking for anything that is not ASCII -- ie; any accented characters, foreign language glyphs. If you don't see any, go back to the top of the file and change the line that states UTF-8 to read ASCII instead, save the file, and try importing that version. -- bieber.genealogy@earthlink.net Dennis Lee Bieber HTTP://home.earthlink.net/~bieber.genealogy/
You could try doing this (on a backup of the file!): Open the Gedcom file in a text editor such as Notepad and look for a line fairly near the top which probably looks like this: 1 CHAR UTF-8 Change the UTF-8 to ANSI and save. This should allow the file to be read by TMG. Hi, I am trying to import a gedcom file produced by MyHeritage into TMG. The program keeps telling me the UFT-8 gedcom file can't be imported. Is there a way to avoid that? Thanks for your help. Alain Van Wayenberge
Hi listers, The Southern California TMG users group will meet Sat Feb 2, 2019 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at the SCGS Library. 417 Irving Drive Burbank, CA Everyone is welcome -- Patt Ricketts www.jackandpatt.com
Thanks Lee and Michael! Very helpful comments! I was keeping track of my custom TMG Source Types in word docs. I also included the Full Footnote, Short Footnote, and Bibliography sentence templates noted along with sample output from sentence previews on the Output form tab of Source Definitions, as well as notes for Source Type Reminders. I reviewed Terry's, Lee's, and Michael's source element tables and copied the Source elements and groups (two columns) into an Excel spreadsheet. I compared the elements to TMG's default (out of the box list) which can be viewed in TMG Help, Search, using "source elements" (yes, with quotes) and in the topic Source Element Groups. This gave me the default source elements and groups. Then, in TMG menu Tools, Source Elements, viewed the resulting list of source elements and compared to the default list. Thus, the custom elements I had added over a period of time were obvious. By selecting a custom element and clicking Edit, the Source Group is shown. Then, I added my custom elements to the new list I made in excel and included an asterisk following the element name for custom elements only. Now, I have a custom list in spreadsheet format for all default and custom source elements. The spreadsheet can be sorted alphabetically on the source element or source group columns as needed for different "ways" to view... or saved as two separate tables. The spreadsheet table is fairly simple, as follows, showing just a couple entries: GROUP............................ELEMENT Author.............................Agency Record Type....................County * Second Location............. State * Finally, it was fairly easy to add a list of source elements and groups to the word docs I already had for tracking custom TMG Source Types. I added the elements and groups used for each specific custom Source Type to make it easier to edit or copy them for other custom source types in the future. Thanks, Tom

Change the default (automatic) locations in: Preferences // Current Project Options // Advanced
Okay. Here's what's happening. When it generates the archive name automatically, it sets it up as verison 8 and now I'm using 9.05 and version 8 has never been on this computer. So how do I get it to change so I don't have to save it to 9 backups manually? It won't work changing the 8 to a 9. Jean, Are you trying to make a backup of a project that is on your "main" disk, or is the TMG project on some other disk, possibly a USB stick? Are you trying to save the backup file to a location that is (A) on your main disk and (B) in a folder that is NOT monitored by Dropbox or any other network-based file backup or file sharing facility? John
I go through all the procedures and have never had a problem before. At the end I get this message with no backup: "Input file read failure-This error occurs when a file read operation is performed on a ZIP file that is locked or restricted by another person." I have no idea what this could be. Any help appreciated. Jean

Yes, Tom, my on-line book is where I keep track of all my customizations and the related standard/default values. The Source Elements table you mention has a prefixed asterisk if the element is custom, but includes all the standard elements in each element group. > Doing this made me realize it would be nice to track the source elements... As the number of your customizations increases, the need to be more rigorous in tracking them and their descriptions increases. (Unless your memory is much better than mine. <grin>) > I reached the maximum number of fields displayed on the source > definition General tab (14 fields plus title field). Yes, this is an issue. I even defined a custom generic Source Type named Miscellaneous which uses the maximum number of possible fields. https://www.mjh-nm.net/SRCTMPLS.HTML#Misc > So, it looks like tracking TMG source elements and their use > in source types may be accomplished in a couple ways... I find that I need *both* of the ways you mention. > (1) Tables of source elements as in Terry's, Lee's, > and Michael's example linked pages above The table is only a quick reference tool, but I find I also need the memory aid of explanations of the elements and their groups. The table's column headings are hyperlinks to a more complete explanation of each Source Element Group in the separate Source Elements chapter: https://www.mjh-nm.net/SRCELEMS.HTML I have not done as complete a job as I probably should of cross hyperlinking from an element's description to all the many source types which use it. I currently only mention the source type(s) which motivated me to create any custom element names in that element group. > (2) Word or spreadsheet doc that includes the user's source types, > noting source element and the corresponding source element record group. The chapter of all my source templates lists at the bottom of each description of a Source Type the abbreviation codes of all source groups used by elements in its templates. That way if I create a new source type starting with an existing source type I know which source element groups are already in use. https://www.mjh-nm.net/SRCTMPLS.HTML The end of any Source Type's description also identifies any custom element names and their groups used in its templates. This reminds me these custom elements are especially meaningful to this Source Type. While I have hyperlinks from each Source Type description to the Source Element Groups for custom Source Elements it uses, I should probably add links to the descriptions for all the Source Element Groups used in that Source Type. [Note to self: the group abbreviation codes could be hyperlinks to those element groups. If/when I add those links, I could add backlinks to that Source Type from each element group description.] The older I get the more I need help with my memory, and web hyperlinks are a great help to me in finding what I need. For this reason as the amount of your customizations increase I recommend using web pages with hyperlinks, like my book, for recording all your customizations, rationale for creating them, and decisions of use. That way you can document something once, and link to it from any other description which refers to that topic. You don't have to post them on-line like I do, you can just keep them as local documents for your own use. Hope this gives you ideas, Michael

If, by "keeping track of ... Source Elements", you mean ensuring that a Source Element (Standard or Custom) from the same Source Element Group is not used twice in the same Source Template then I suggest creating a table listing each Source Element Group and its Source Elements (Standardd Custom). Then, as you create/edit a Source Template and use a Source Element, check off each Source Element Group as you use a Source Element from that Source Element Group. The table shown on my web-site at at http://www.tmgtips.com/srcelem6.htm is a good example of such a layout. I believe this needs updating as some new Standard Source Elements may have been added. since v7x. When it is up-to-date, just add any Custom Cource Elements that you have created. My table could be displayed in a spreadsheet or in a work processor, such as what Brian Gross' message attempts to show. Terry's has the table sorted by Source Element rather than Source Element Group which allows quickly finding a Source Element and the Source Element in which it is used. But, it may not easily identify where the same Source Element Group might be used. Actually, it would be good to have multiple tables as they are all useful at times. Hi, Looking for comments on how users are keeping track of TMG's standard and user defined custom Source Elements and in how the elements are used in Source Types. I found Terry Reigel's info at http://tmg.reigelridge.com/elements.htm and Lee Hoffman's at http://www.tmgtips.com/srcelem6.htm. Michael Hannah has a list of source elements that looks like standard elements and user defined at https://www.mjh-nm.net/SRCELEMS_TABLE.HTML#Top. Interesting related messages here https://lists.rootsweb.com/hyperkitty/list/tmg.rootsweb.com/thread/19029/ I'm not following Brian Gross' example spreadsheet setup, most likely due to plain text message formatting... jumbles the example. I revised my Census source type - 1850 to 1940 which is based on Terry's Census example and added the "Informant" source element. In doing that, I had to sort of start from scratch making a list of each source element used in the Sentences, noting the record group each came from so as not to use two source elements from the same group. Doing this made me realize it would be nice to track the source elements in a word or spreadsheet doc that are used in each Source Type... in a better way than I do now. As an aside, after adding the Informant source element to the Census source type, I noticed that I reached the maximum number of fields displayed on the source definition General tab (14 fields plus title field). Terry's Census examples place website info in the Comments field on the Supplemental tab. Some time ago when I followed Terry's example, I made source element fields for defining the website and related info for where the Census was viewed, with the idea the info would appear in a standard way, however, that does as noted make for 14 source element fields on the General tab, the maximum allowed. So, it looks like tracking TMG source elements and their use in source types may be accomplished in a couple ways... (1) Tables of source elements as in Terry's, Lee's, and Michael's example linked pages above (2) Word or spreadsheet doc that includes the user's source types, noting source element and the corresponding source element record group. Thanks, Tom
Bob, First, do you have a good backup of your TMG project? Next, I suggest that you open your project in repair mode, not the sample. Perhaps there is some issue with your project, and it is not being fixed because you open the sample project. I admit I am guessing about that. John
When I go to TMG listed below is what happens. I think I have unknowingly screwed something up. Open TMG. TMG comes up and says it is opening in repair mode. When the TMG opening screen comes up I have two choices: the Sample project and my main project, RPB family from TMG v4_PJC. The Master Genealogist (Repair Mode) I then closed TMG and shut off the computer. Started the computer, Click on TMG A window shows repair mode has been activated. OK (in a box) Opens sample project in repair mode On the TMG box the file window has Sample Project and RPB Project. Clicked in RPB project – get window saying Project is in use elsewhere. Please select another project. Note; RPB project is my main project – R. P. Black- in place of Bob Black. I can’t figure out where or how to close the open project. Any suggestions or ideas would be appreciated. Thanks, Bob Black
John, Many thanks for the modifications to the Person Detail Filters. I don’t know if I was the only user wanting to hide an included subject’s parentage on both the subject’s and the parent’s page. I have now unscrambled several hundred records which had rather messy workarounds, so have had plenty of examples to test. I can confirm that the change does exactly what I wanted. Chris Sackett
