Thank you to all of you.  I knew there was something more to preparing the index but I didn't know what that was.  And special thanks to Nancy because after I sent the request for help I realized I have altered the journal report.  I expected to have to prepare the index by hand, but she tells me I can update it. Nancy, From Help: NOTE: Some word processors receive the index codes from TMG, but do not structure the index in a visible form. If you have chosen to include an index in your report, but it doesn't appear to be there, you may have to generate the index in your word processor or select a different screen mode which shows the completed document. 2. Lee Hoffman
    3. Rowan - One thing to keep in mind is that the Sentences included as default for standard Tags in TMG will work for the majority of your data and reports based on that data. HOWEVER, the narrative reports produced from those default Sentences will sound/read like a "canned" report or something like the following simplified version: Joe was born 2 Feb 1912 at Lexington, Kentucky. He married Mary, daughter of John and Susan, on 14 Jun 1934 at Lexington, Kentucky. He died on 22 Sep 1967 at Lexington, Kentucky. He was buried 24 Sep1967 in Lexington Cemetery, Lexington, Kentucky. Mary was born 18 Aug 1917 at Lexington, Kentucky. She married Joe, son of James and Betty, on 14 Jun 1934 at Lexington, Kentucky. She died on 14 Apr 1981 at Lexington, Kentucky. She was buried 16 Apr 1981 in Lexington Cemetery, Lexington, Kentucky. Can you imagine reading a report of say forty pages filled with this kind of writing? Byt the third page, I would be asleep and when I awoke, I probably would not read any more. While default Sentences are good as a starter, it is recommended that the user create Custom Sentences. Many do this by creating new and multiple Roles for most if not all) event Tags. Then it is simple to select a different Role (more or less on a rotating basis) as each new Tag is added to a person. This method requires much work in the beginning. Some customize the Tag Sentences as a Tag is added. This method is a lot more work in the long run. I would suggest that you prepare what I call a "Test" project of about four generationss of one line. This needs only a dozen or so people with just the birth, marriage, death, burial, and Relationship Tags. Now, if you have a question about how a report would look based on various Report Definition [Options...], this can show you. If you have a question about how a specific Tag would appear, add that Tag to someone in the Test project (doesn't much matter who and the data does not have to be real although it needs to be enough like reality to give the expected results). You may want to add new persons enough to give the similar kind of situation that you expect to encounter in your main project. I started with about a dozen people and have over the years increased the size to a few dozen. Actually, I have done this a number of times as I created a backup of the original, and Retored that backup a number of times since the project got big enough that I did not remember all the "fake" things I added. So I just started over with wjat I knew was okay and then modified it an needed again and again. Lee

    3. Rowan, Lee and Michael have explained how TMG generates prepositions in sentences. There is also a way to selectively control place prepositions like "in" and "at" by making the preposition part of the place, to be entered on a tag-by-tag basis when the tag is created or edited. I adopted this method a number of years ago to avoid the need to customize sentences. I devoted one place element, L10, to holding the preposition that I want to precede the first of the other elements. Then I set up a custom place style that puts L10 first with no intervening comma in the output. With the Journal Report option set for no preposition I can get just what I want in every report sentence without using sentence customizations for this purpose. Typical wordings this is used for are "in" "at" "near" "in his home" "in rural" etc. When using F2 to reenter a place that has used before, upon typing the first few letters the applicable places appear with different entries for the different prepositions that have been previously used. Downsides are a larger Master Place List, unwanted place prepositions in the Journal Report Index of Places (which I don't use), and unwanted place prepositions in the Journal Report List of Children if any of the BMDB events are included in the report option for abbreviated events for children (I remove these prepositions in the LoC with a simple word processor macro). 3. Warning. Properly done the cloud can be a good place to archive TMG backups. BUT... no ONE place for a backup is ever reliable. In the latest computer news, four days ago it was reported: "Attackers have launched a catastrophic attack against secure email provider VFEmail, wiping all primary and backup systems that contained data belonging to US users of the service. The VFEmail website now appears to be operational in the US and paid users can receive new messages, but their inboxes and *ARCHIVES* are empty." The lesson this teaches is that all data at any one cloud service can become lost. Always store backups in multiple DIFFERENT locations. Michael

    1. [TMG] Re: Storing database in the cloud
    2. Michael J. Hannah
    3. Perhaps it would help to summarize this discussion concerning the cloud. First, two computers each running TMG can access and edit the same project at the same time *ONLY* if they are accessing the exact same single set of disk files for that project using a Windows shared disk. Second, two SEPARATE types of data services have been discussed. One I will call "archival storage". The other I will call "real-time backup". Either may or may not involve the cloud as the destination of the archive. Only the second service can potentially corrupt a TMG project. An "archival storage" program (such as OneDrive) can be configured to ONLY run when no other program is likely to be running on your computer. An example would be a configuration parameter for it to only run at 2AM. Now all you have to do is be sure to always quit TMG when you finish working. When the "archival storage" program runs it would archive some files to an archive location (such as the cloud). The program could be configured either to always archive specific files and/or folders, or configured to only archive files that apparently have changed since the last archive. If no other programs are running, all files are static and can be copied to the archival location (such as the cloud) without any problem or fear of corruption. A "real-time backup" program (such as OneDrive) can run on your computer. It can be constantly monitoring files on the disk (such as TMG files), and it can immediately back up any file that appears changed to some archive location (such as the cloud). This can occur *WHILE* TMG is still running. If so your TMG project can become corrupted. You may be lucky and TMG will not be corrupted "this time", or you may not notice the corruption, but it is almost certain that sooner or later some TMG files WILL become corrupted by this automatic real-time backup action. The only recourse in such a case is to restore a good backup (and hope that earlier backup was not already corrupted). It is important to remember that "real-time backup" programs do NOT make it possible for other programs (like TMG) to use data DIRECTLY where it resides in the cloud. These other programs running on different computers are NOT running off the same disk as described. If one of these "real-time backup" programs is running, it may APPEAR that the other program (e.g. TMG) is directly using the data on the cloud. It isn't. Instead the backup program will COPY some of that other program's data from the cloud to your local disk, let that other program run on that disk data, copy any changed data back from disk to the cloud, then copy some more data from the cloud to disk as that other program needs it. This only works successfully if BOTH the backup progam AND the other program KNOW that each are running, and are both programmed to ensure they do not interfere with each other. TMG does NOT know about any such backup programs. That is the problem. TMG could happen to write to a file exactly while the backup was copying it to archive. The front part of the cloud file would be the "old" version and the back part of the file the "new" version. Corruption. There are a lot of "IFs" in the above situation. It is these "IFs" that suggest ways to avoid corruption. Qne could configure the backup program to never look at the TMG data folders. Then the TMG files would not be in jeopardy. When you finish a TMG session you could create a TMG backup to a TMG data folder which is NOT being monitored by the backup program. Then you could copy that completed backup file to a folder which IS being monitored by the backup program. Now the backup program will automatically archive that new file. Or the automatic monitoring could be turned off during the day, and only run at night, which would essentially convert the program to just being an "archival storage" program as described above. Hope this helps somewhat to explain what is going on, Michael

    3. In my earlier message, I included a batch file that I use to copy a TMG backup SQZ file to some other folder. I have modified that file to make it even easier. The batch file is a text only file (use NOTEPAD and name the file "bkup.bat" in the C:\ folder: >CD C:\TMGv9\UD\Backups\ >rem The above changes the focus of the computer to the backup folder >@echo off >setlocal >if not "%1"=="" goto argsok >echo usage: %0 sqzfile >echo where: sqzfile is the file name of your SQZ file >echo and your project is named "myproject" >echo Example: sqzfile = myproject5.sqz >echo bkup 5 >echo or >echo bkup "5" >goto end > >:argsok > setlocal > set sqzfile=%1 > set backupdir=D:\TMGBAK\ > if not exist %backupdir% goto notfile > echo %backupdir% exists > goto skipdir >:notfile > rem If the backup file does not exist, create it. > if exist %backupdir%\nul goto skipdir > md %backupdir% > if "%errorlevel%"=="0" goto skipdir > echo Error creating backup directory > goto end >:skipdir > echo Copying HOFFMAN__%sqzfile%.sqz > xcopy /f/v/y HOFFMAN__%sqzfile%.sqz %backupdir% >:end >rem Clean up >endlocal > >pause Using this, I type the following into the Cortana search field in the Taskbar at the bottom of the screen: c:\bkup.bat 1 The last character in the command is the rotational backup file suffix. If the backup were to be suffix number 8 then the command line would end in 8 instead of 1. The batch file has been set so that the project name as the file type to be copied are already included and don;t have to be entered in the type command. If you have multiple project, you can change the batch file by changing the two lines near the end of the file by removing "HOFFMAN__" optionally replacing that with your _single_ project name or just not putting any project name in the batch file. In that case, just include the backup file name (you don't need to include the ".sqz"). As Dennis and Richard have noted, there are other ways the batch file can be written. In most cases, a user will only need a two line batch file such as Richard noted he uses. This is baecause most of us use a single computer with backup and destination folders already setup. But for a batch file used with multiple computers or various folder arrangements, a more complex batch file may be called for. A batch file similar to the above, but much simpler might be: >set sqzfile=%1 >echo Copying HOFFMAN__%sqzfile%.sqz >xcopy /f/v/y C:\TMGv9\UD\Backups\HOFFMAN__%sqzfile%.sqz D:\TMGBAK > >pause Note again that this is set for a single project and uses the rotation SQZ file rotational suffix to denote which backup to copy. 3. Rowan Sylvester-Bradley wrote: > I'm trying to fully understnd how TMG generates sentences. Hi Rowan, I suggest looking at Terry's excellent web-pages explaining TMG. He carefully explains TMG's Sentence Structures beginning on this page: https://tmg.reigelridge.com/Sentences.htm As for the automatic "at" "in" or "on" prepositions, he explains this on the separate page about each type of sentence variable (e.g. [S] [L] [D] [M]) which is referenced from the above page. See: https://tmg.reigelridge.com/variables.htm For example, under the table of Location Variables [L] on that page Terry explains: The preposition "at" or "in" (depending on the report options setting) is placed in front of locations if the variable is enclosed in conditional brackets, provided there is nothing between the opening bracket and the variable. Examples: <[L]> produces: at San Francisco < [L]> produces: San Francisco Much of the sentence construction is automatic, but it is always based on the global or local sentence structure being used, and any sentence variables it contains, along with some report options. > If I want to change some of these things, e.g. change "in" to "at" The specific automatic prepositions for the Location, as Terry mentions above, is controlled by a Report Option. For example, open the Options for the Journal report and click on the "Places" tab. Those options control the *default* output for all Locations in this report, including which (if any) preposition to use. However, both local and global custom sentence structures can be constructed to override these defaults for a tag type or a particular tag sentence. All this can appear somewhat complex at first, but once you learn where to look and how TMG works you can pretty much control the sentence output to be whatever you want. > or a comma to a semicolon, how do I do this? It depends upon what comma you wish to change. The general answer is that one modifies the sentence stucture appropriately to override the defaults. For a particular comma ask a more detailed question and one of us will be happy to explain how to get what you want. Michael

Some system will optionally delete the file after changes have been uploaded under some defined condition. This is needed to give the user fast access to the file. If there was a system that did actually keep the file 'in the cloud' and provided a network file system to it, it just might be a safe way to do it. The issue with the cloud saving systems is that they need at some point to decide that the file has changed and upload it to the cloud. To do that they will get a 'Read Lock' on the file that prevents other programs from writing to it, and if TMG decides during that window to try to write a record to that file, it will fail, and possible corrupt the database. The issue being that TMG knows the files are databases, and uses a different access method that just gets a 'shared lock' on the file and uses special record locking methods that allow on program to be reading part of the database while a second program can be writing to a different part of the file. It is possible that OneDrive uses a different method, there are advanced access methods that open a file for reading, but don't lock it, and give that program a notification that the file changed on them so they can redo the read. If it does, then it is safe, as TMG could then do its write without being bothered by the file not being available for writing,  but the problem is no one seems to provide that sort of details of their operation, so you are taking a risk due to not knowing if it is safe. It may also be that they have a longer delay after the file is written before they upload the changes, and that greatly drops the chance of getting the conflict. The big problem is that TMG wasn't written expecting this sort of problem (this sort of background access weren't common when the underlying database drivers were written, and were under minimal to non-support for many years, The sort of corruption they cause also may not be that obvious, and may take a while to create signs of problems. -- Richard Damon

As Richard says, the project has to be in a _shared_ folder on the network. For example: the network might have: Computer A -- with hard drives C: and D: & Computer B -- with hard drives C: and D:: I have Computer A folder C:\TMGv9 shared on the network. With TMG installed on both computers in folder C:\TMGv9. Now open MyProject in Computer A from the C:\TMGv9\UD\Projects\ folder. Now my wife can open the same project from Computer B by pointing to the UD\Projects sub-folder of the shared C:\TMGv9 folder on Computer A and selecting the MyProject project. Assuming that she has person #6 in the Person View and has the Birth Tag open, If I also try to open the same Birth Tag from Computer A then a notice will appear stating that the record is in use elsewhere. If you are communicating (across the desk or by phone), you can have the other user close the Tag and then retry opening the Tag (select [Yes] in the notice) or you can answer [No] and the Birth Tag will still open, but in read-only mode (the [OK] button is dimmed out). Note that while my wife might be working with the Birth Tag of person #6, I could simultaneously work with the Death (or some other) Tag. Similarly, I could work in the Master Source List on one Source and my wife could work on a different Source. If either of use tried to open the Source Definition that the other had open, we would get get the "locked" notice. The same applies to any other record in the project. Win10 (& I believes since WinVista) has made it easy to setup what is called a HomeGroup network Note that normal TMG installation puts the TMG data files in the user's Documents folder. This may take a bit more work for sharing. But the principle is the same. WANs (Wide Area Networks are pretty much the same as LAN (Local Area Networks) although they are a bit more complex. I used a special network type program some years ago when I was traverlling which allowed me to sign in to my home computer from anywhere in the world. In that case, I was on my home computer just as if I was home and could run TMG on it even though I was thousands of miles away. A similar kind of program is used by technicians across the country to allow them to work your computer from their office while you are sitting in front of your computer watching the screen and seeing what they are doing. In both these case, the programs are not really networking, but remote access. Lee

    3. I must have been doing it that way ,MOVING the people and not "copied them away". I knew it was something who wasn`t right.... <TMG provise a way to MOVE people using the Project Explorer from one data set to another and have the <person(s) be completely removed from the original data set. Highlight the persons in the Project Explerer to be <moved to a different data set and, with the left button depressed, shift the mouse slight to the right. A sihoulette <will appear, releaes the mouse button and a notice will appear stating that you can't move within the same data <set and asking if you want to move to a different data set. Click [Yes] and the Move persons window will appear. <Select the "Move selected people in the Project Explorer option and choose the desired data set. Click [OK] and <the people will be copied to the "new" data set and deleted from the "old" one. Would been OK to do it this way if I could be sure that having a dataset in the project will not overcome the limit etc. I am able to highlight people in the Project explorer ,but then you also write that "with the left button depressed, shift the mouse slight to the right" I don`t know what you mean by that ,but I can also get a silhouette appear by holding down the left mousebutton ,but releasing it doesn`t say anything about that I can't move within the same data ,and neither if want to move to a different data set........When pushing the right mousebutton I get an option to move them to focusgroup. From there you can move them to the new dataset. Anyway...guess this is the same as first putting the AAS=Y people in project explorer ,then take some portions of them at a time into the focusgroup ,then going to Edit-;Move people. <You can do this move for one person of all those highlighted in the Project Explorer. You can do this move for one person of all thoe highlighted in the Project Explorer"? ,do you mean I can only move one at a time ,even if several I highlighted? <I would strongly suggest that you make sure that those being moved do not have ANY connection with anyone <else in the original data set. If <they have, remove thos connections first. Hmmm ,that would be hard ,since many of them actually have connections with some AAS=N people that I shall keep in the old "dataset"...... When I have entered people into my project ,I have until last year had only one project for all lines on my family ,and several of them are related to others somehow..... Only option I can see to actually delete people from my project is to use the Move people feature on edit menu. Any other way around it?? The people I want to delete are marked with a blue accented AAS=Y flag ,and I am pretty sure I haven`t forgot anyone....also I have taken a backup before I started trying to make any dataset. The last time I worked on moving people ,it was not much trouble or work because it was my family from Sweden ,and they had nearly no connections with anyone else. All my other family are from Norway ,and have much more connections with others in the project. If I have to go through the moving people feature to "delete" people ,is it any possibility of sending those people to be deleted to a dataset in another smaller project??? ,or isn`t that possible? (Just a thougt....since I have several smaller projects to have datasets in ,and then I could be able to remove several people at once...). -----Opprinnelig melding----- Fra: Lee Hoffman [mailto:azchief@bellsouth.net] Sendt: 16. februar 2019 18:45 Til: The Master Genealogist Rootsweb Email List <tmg@rootsweb.com> Emne: [TMG] Re: Error message trying to make a new project At 2/16/2019 12:08, Erik Hov wrote >The project actually has about 996000 people ,and it will have about >875000 people after deleting those about 121000.... >Also found out about how I seemingly deleted people from last time I >split out a project. As has been said before -- that will not work!!! You cannot COPY (which is what you do in creating a new data set or a new project ) people to a new data set or project and then delete to new data set/project and expect those people to disappear from the original project. The thing is that COPYING people is NOT in any way MOVING them. TMG provise a way to MOVE people using the Project Explorer from one data set to another and have the person(s) be completely removed from the original data set. Highlight the persons in the Project Explerer to be moved to a different data set and, with the left button depressed, shift the mouse slight to the right. A sihoulette will appear, releaes the mouse button and a notice will appear stating that you can't move within the same data set and asking if you want to move to a different data set. Click [Yes] and the Move persons window will appear. Select the "Move selected people in the Project Explorer option and choose the desired data set. Click [OK] and the people will be copied to the "new" data set and deleted from the "old" one. You can do this move for one person of all those highlighted in the Project Explorer. I would strongly suggest that you make sure that those being moved do not have ANY connection with anyone else in the original data set. If they have, remove thos connections first.
