    3. I would enter both lineages and mark both sets of parents as non-primary - that way I had both possible lines entered and available for research/review. I use custom research notes (non-printing) and research conclusions (printing) tags to input my therories and thoughts about the competing lineage and I specifically note in the research conclusions tag that parentage is NOT determined but may be [parents A] or [parents B] On 6/15/2015 10:54 AM, Barbara B Reitt via wrote: > I have a ggg-grandfather for whom I have found competing ancestries in the > genealogical literature. 3. I have a ggg-grandfather for whom I have found competing ancestries in the genealogical literature. One line is from an older book on the family in print for many years, and the other is from articles on the same man published in more recent journals like The Virginia Genealogist and The American Genealogist. I have found discussions online of the disagreement that pretty clearly indicate that until someone does some DNA testing and publishes the results, there will be no clear answer as to which lineage is correct. I'm not counting on living long enough to find out what the answer might eventually be. I already have the older lineage entered in TMG for this man and am trying to figure out a way to enter the competing lineage so that it's clear that the basic question-just who were the ancestors of this guy, line A or line B?-is clear to someone else looking at my database. I don't want to end up with a project that seems to claim that one or the other is true, when in fact I don't know which one to prefer. I'd welcome suggestions from anyone who has confronted a similar problem. Barbara

    3. Barbara B Reitt asked: How best to enter two competing ancestries for one person? Well, Barbara, "Best" is a matter of personal choice. <grin> Others have made several good suggestions. "My" method is to enter a "duplicate" person. One person is linked to one set of parents and has only the tags and citations which indicate one set of ancestors. The other person is linked to the other parents and has the tags and citations indicating those other ancestors. Then I have a custom tag which I have named "Duplicate" with P1 as one "person" and P2 the "duplicate". Similar to what others have suggested, this tag type is output as a "research" type of tag, and in Second Site it is output in a separate "Research" tag group. As others have mentioned, defining separate custom tag types for separate purposes allows considerably more control over both their output, and for searching. Since in your case there is no clear indication of which is correct, this method of separating the two possibilities seems the most appropriate. I prefer it precisely because I can separately link a given piece of evidence to the appropriate opposing theory/person. In some cases I even choose to not connect either as a Primary parent of the children, but instead connect both as "Candidate" parents for these children. While normally I do not have Witnesses to a "Duplicate" tag, this one tag could be locally modified to add the children as witnesses with appropriate Witness sentences and memos. Individual Witness memos to this tag could be useful if there is some evidence that a particular child is more likely to descend from one or the other set of ancestors. More details of "My Way" to deal with this common situation are in my on-line book. My custom "Duplicate" tag type is described here: http://www.mjh-nm.net/TAGCUSTM.HTML#DuplicateTag with its roles and sentence templates here: http://www.mjh-nm.net/SENTENCE.HTML#DuplicateSentences Hope this gives you ideas, Michael

    3. >From this person forward in time there is little dispute, right? It's the ancestors that are being argued over? I do have the same problem in my files, a couple times. Here is what I have done First I enter the newly discovered-as-a-result-of-reading-something-authoritative (like T.A.G.) lineage for the person in question. and include an record for the person in question a second time (as if 'twere a different person). Finally I write up an Anecdote Tag, discussing all the arguments pro and con, and assign the two versions of the troublesome person as P1 and P2 so that the anecdote will follow both. I date the Anecdote Tag to be just before the birthdate so it will list first. When browsing my project, I will spot the tag right away and be reminded of the controversy. By clicking on the other person attached to the tag I can be taken immediately to the alternate lineage. When printing out reports, the tag serves to alert that there is a separate report I might wish to also print out. I've never used a data-paths.txt file to set the locations or to do anything else. Is there something else that could have caused the problem? Joan, That is the correct date and size, but the name is not the original file name, so apparently you have changed the file name. The fact that the installed program shows 9.05 also shows it is the correct installer. The fact that it didn't ask for your unlock key is normal - it's already entered in your system. It sounds like you have previously set the file locations to a non-standard location, and that's not being used by your new installation. Did you use a data_paths.txt file to set the paths? 3. I need help identifying the correct latest TMG 9.05 setup file or files, because I have done something wrong with the installation on my desktop. (My laptop is fine - v 9.05 was installed when it became available and I haven't done anything to mess it up.) I do have a license and an unlock key. Here's what happened: Last week, when dealing with a problem generating PDF reports with TMG (problem now solved), I uninstalled and reinstalled TMG 9.05, using a setup file in My Documents/TMG9 folder, but apparently I used a wrong or damaged file - because the program I have installed is incomplete. I can run it, and work with my data, and the About TMG screen says I have v 9.05, but so far I've noticed a few things that have not worked normally: 1) the Welcome screen always has Last greyed out, so I always have to select my project. 2) Nothing happens when I click on Help, or Help Contents in the Help menu. F1 doesn't do anything either. 3) The first time I opened my project after reinstalling, the person who was displayed was someone I last edited in July 2014 - some time before version 9.05. Now that I have restored my latest backup it opens to the person I last edited. 4) When I first installed it, I was surprised that it didn't ask for my unlock key. The file I used is tmg9setup-905.exe, dated 12/3/2014, 47,651 KB. Should I be using a different file from the TMG9 folder? I'll really appreciate some guidance. Joan Lince

    3. Robin, I'm not finding any unknown people. (I believe all unknowns are entered as person with given and/or surnames of "(--?--)".) The spaces are seemingly random, appear to be making it so that the parents are centered over the children or some such. In one case, there is one person some 10m to the right of the nearest other people, and those other people are several meters farther right than they need to be. I was hoping there might be an alternative to manually editing, which is proving both a drudge and going to require that I learn more about moving boxes and connecting lines. Thanks, Robin and Virginia. Unfortunately, I'm not going to get this fixed for this reunion. Too much "life happening" right now. For children of couples who are not direct ancestors or siblings of an ancestor, I generally just list their children in the memo. So in the output for that sentence below, the words within quotes were entered manually: She married John BLACK, son of James Black and Eleanor Jones, on 27 November 1793; "children (b. KY; surname BLACK): James, Jane, and Eleanor." I recently realized that I shouldn't have to type all that in the memo every time, so I created a new marriage sentence of: [P] married [PO] <[PARO]> <[D]> <[L]><; [M1]><; children (<[M3]; >surname [SL]): [M2]> Where M1 is any comment about the marriage, M2 is the list of children, and M3 is place of birth or baptism. Now I'm seeing several problems. 1. The surname variable is of the subject, which may be the wife. It needs to be the name of the husband, but there's no surname variable for P1. 2. M3 needs to allow for either b. (born) or bp. (baptized) and a place which may or may not be in one of the location fields. I couldn't figure out how to do that with the available variables. 3. Also, the output inserts an unwanted space after the parenthesis and before M3 like this: "children ( b. KY; surname JONES):" Any thoughts much appreciated, KayS

    3. That worked Terry. I didn’t realize that was part of the filter list, thought I had to do it on the first report screen. Robin, Won't adding an "AND" term for "Is and ancestor of" or "Is a descendant of" do it? Or if you need to include spouses, etc, set up a Flag to define the line and include that flag in your filter. Our, you could use the List of Names report with a term that uses a Flag you set for the line. Terry Reigel

    1. [TMG] Report to find Event tags without a source
    2. Robin Kaspar via
    3. I always have difficulty with my logic when designing TMG reports. I am working on one of my lines and I want to troubleshoot certain tags that don’t have a source, hearkening back to my early pre-TMG research days when I didn’t know better and also was working with software that didn’t allow much for source citations. How best to go about this? List of people? I can filter on Name-var, # of citations = 0. But I can’t filter on only the one line of descendants. Help! Robin in Short Pump
