I noticed something that seems odd when I checked the Journal Report for a member of my family. I have a married couple with two daughters. Each of the daughters is married. The parents' information appears correctly under "1." Under "Children of (parents) are as follows," the two daughters are listed with their respective births and marriages. BUT one has her occupation listed at this point, the other does not -- and the one who does have her occupation listed isn't listed in generation two! Both daughters are correctly listed with their parents. Both display "4th cousin 1 time removed," etc. Under "tags" I have chosen "only children carried forward" -- I don't fully understand what that means, but in this case it doesn't seem to matter which option I choose. One difference, though, is that one child has children and the other one does not. Would that result in "generation two" not including the child who doesn't have children? It's entirely possible that I simply never noticed this difference before. I hope you can follow this! Thanks in advance for whatever help you can provide. Judy Madnick Albany, NY
Thanks to everyone for their valuable replies. This has been an interesting topic. Later versions of TMG clearly benefit from even more flexibility than that available in 7.4, at least for screen presentation. I don't think I understood the capability to transfer colour to standard reports. Thanks also for the reminder about SS's Tag Grouping facility. I already use this but I was so focussed on creating a colour differentiation between home and business that it did not occur to me. Nor did I realise that you don't have to use this facility globally throughout your project but can apply it just to particular individuals if you choose. Nick

Did you use a data_paths.txt file to set the paths? I'm happy to have such a clear explanation of why my TMG is misbehaving. Now I have two concerns, because TMG is important to me and I'm hoping to find a way to get it running normally. 1. What could have moved them? I didn't do it. (Didn't use a data_paths.txt file to set the paths.) Everything looks correct in File/Preferences/Current Project/Advanced. Could it be some of the maintenance programs Dell automatically runs on my computer? I hope not only to fix the problem but also to prevent it from happening again. 2. How do I get the file locations back to the standard locations? Joan, That is the correct date and size, but the name is not the original file name, so apparently you have changed the file name. The fact that the installed program shows 9.05 also shows it is the correct installer. The fact that it didn't ask for your unlock key is normal - it's already entered in your system. It sounds like you have previously set the file locations to a non-standard location, and that's not being used by your new installation. Did you use a data_paths.txt file to set the paths? Check the Data.Database.Show Excluded Data setting. If it is checked, uncheck it. If that's not it, make sure you are using the same TMG project in SS as you are using in TMG. Toby, I am not a Mac person, but if I read it correctly Android File Transfer is just for transferring your data from the Mac to your Android phone? You need something on your phone to see and open the files (in particular the SS index.htm file). I use a program called "ES File Explorer" it is free and does not have adverts. You download it from the Android store. There are probably many programs for exploring files on an Android but I find this one works for me and the price was right!. Barbara has told you how to create a shortcut so you can open SS easily without having to go through ES File Explorer (if that is what you will use) every time. I have this set up on my Note 3 running Anrodid 4.4.2 without any problems. Gedstar Pro is OK too, and I have that as well. But one limitation I find is its lack of useful place searching capabilities. So in SS I add the Master Place Index item which gives me very powerful place searching. Graeme Simpson > >If I look at the folder structure within, say Android File Transfer, >I'll see the index.htm file, but I cannot seem to get it to display on >the phone screen where I can click on it.
Nick, Another way of showing a change of context within a person's narrative report is to set off certain text with different indentation and/or font characteristics. I use this method in three situations: ==Short quotations within a narrative paragraph use the same font and size as the rest of the paragraph but are in italics. ==Long quotations and historical background material are in separate paragraphs with the same font and size as the body of the narrative but they are in italics and are indented differently. ==Research notes which digress from the person's narrative to comment on issues or methods encountered in researching him/her are in separate paragraphs with the same font as the narrative but they are in italics and use a smaller point size. Of course lots of other variations are possible. The indentation can be changed using TMG's Indent Left code from the right-click menu. Font characteristics can be changed with the Format/Italics, Format/Point Size, or Font/Labels choices. -----Original Message----- From: tmg-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:tmg-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Nick Shelley via Sent: Friday, June 19, 2015 3:05 AM To: tmg@rootsweb.com Subject: [TMG] TMG 7.4 Changing the colour of particular memo texts I have the situation where an individual's life events intermix between business details and home life. Is there some way of putting the work >events in a separate colour? Coloring may be helpful within TMG, but when it comes to generating reports those colors don't usually translate to black and white -- the usual print mode. It can do nicely if you have a color printer; but few people do and for more of those that do, the printer is slow). Small, short printings with color during work-up can be helpful, but not in the long run. Getting a narrative to flow smoothly can be a challenge for many individuals. For me, the solution varies by the individual. In most cases, the solution is rearranging the text, Tags (Sort Dates are very helpful in this area), and often my thinking (usually by getting someone else to be the devil's advocate for me). Along with the idea of the devil's advocate (usually my wife), I often check with other researchers. For not a few times, these point out information I have missed that smooths the transition of the narrative. Very often, I will just take some scrap paper and write out the narrative (usually just the main points with a lot of abbreviation). This gets me away from the rote sentences that seem to clog my mind and gives me a fresh look at the person. Keep your potential reader in mind during this process and be creative in your writing much as you would if you weren't using TMG, but writing the narrative in your word processor. After I do this, I translate the result back into TMG sometimes by combining two or more Tags or by splitting up a Tag and moving some of the information from one Tag to "later" in the narrative. Lee

Is there some way of putting the work > events in a separate colour? Nick, There are color codes available that will let specified text print in color. They are on the right-click menu for Memos, so you can add colors to the text of specific text. They are not on the right-click for Sentences, so I don't know if they work there. I suspect they may but haven't tried them. If so, you could create separate Tag Types or Roles that specify color for the text. However, I'm not convinced that color is the best approach. I think using sort dates to arrange the tags more logically is a better approach. You can group personal and business events in a way that provides a more logical text. Terry Reigel
Rereading your question, Nick, I now understand you are talking about the text in a "report" not the actual tag in the Details display. Terry's ideas will be useful for text coloring. But I agree with him that grouping the tags would be better. If your output is Second Site, you could use its Tag Grouping feature to separately group "work" tag types. Michael
Sorry, Nick, you cannot do that in the Version 7.04 which you are using. Color coding of events was a major feature added in Version 8. However, there is a (very) kludgy way to "sort of" color code events in Version 7.04 by using the Accent feature to color code people's names. For events which have only one Principal you can assign P2 to a "dummy" person. That "person" can have a special Flag set to a given value which is causes their name to be a special color due to the Accent. Of course having a "dummy" second Principal means you would have to be sure the sentences did not include P2, and would cause problems with GEDCOM export of those tags. But it "can" be used for color coding. Hope this gives you ideas, Michael

As much as I would hate to do it, I think a web based application is the way the industry is going. For me that means using TMG or SS to create a GEDCOM that would be compatible with say, Ancestry, and then upload it. However, that may not be the best of the on-line services. I have looked at WikiTree because of its great use of DNA tests. That is the final solution to discovering the parents of my immigrant ancestor. As I get closer to retirement I realize that all of my work will disappear when I do so I am working to find the best on-line service.
