Tom and Michael, The Change Citation Parts feature in TMGU prevents the creation of CD parts that have a single space because the official TMG rule is that spaces aren't significant in split memo fields. If I recall correctly, after TMGU evaluates the Change Citation Part actions for a particular citation, it inspects the part values and any parts that contain only spaces are emptied. Michael has suggested a method that allows TMGU to create spaces in CDn values using Find and Replace. The same basic method would work with Change Citation Parts, but using the "Change Detail" rather than "Change Detail4" or one of the other split-part-changing actions. However, I don't think the workaround is how to proceed. That's treating a symptom. Instead, we need to determine why Tom sees the unusual results where a space in an otherwise empty CD4 appears to affect the use of CD5, etc. As far as I know, there is no such rule in TMG. I can't explain why Tom sees the results he sees, but I don't have time to experiment right now. I know that in the past TMG had trouble parsing successive split memo parts unless there was a space for each "skipped" part, but I thought those bugs were fixed a long time ago. John
Michael J. Hannah wrote: > Tom Fulton asked: >> I am trying to have TMGU insert a space in a citation detail field... Okay, Tom, I finally figured out how to do this. Do not use "Change Citation Parts" in TMGU. Instead use "Find and Replace". Field to change: Citation Detail Find what: "^(.*)\|\|\|\|(.*)" (without the surrounding quotes) Replace with: "$1|| ||$2" (without the surrounding quotes) Check only the box for "Use Pattern Matching". Run this as many times as necessary so that the log output for TMGU shows it is no longer making any changes in any Citation Detail. >> The reasons I want a space in CD4 are... Yes, Tom, thanks to you forwarding your templates I now see the same behavior. As best I can make out without exhaustive testing it seems that TMG is treating the four vertical bars as if they were *six* vertical bars??? So, for example, if CD3 is empty without a space, TMG does not output CD3, but also! does not output CD4, and then puts the text for CD4 in CD5's output, and the text for CD5 in CD6's output!!! This is really bizarre, and I will need to do more testing before I include it in my "Outstanding Bugs" on-line document. There may be other conditions that cause even more bizarre behavior when a 'place holder' space is not used in an empty split part. To be fair, TMG HELP has said for some time in the "Empty Split Citation Detail and Citation Memo Field Parts" section of the "Citation (Existing)" topic: "If you use multiple split memo parts, you should always use a 'place holder' space in any empty memo parts." So bizarre behavior where the spaces are missing I guess should not be totally unexpected. Hope this helps, Michael
Michael Thanks for the reply. I am using TMG 9.05.0000 TMGU 7.3 build 3 My full footnote template is (all templates and results are copy and paste) "[TITLE]," [RECORD TYPE], [ITAL:][PUBLISHER][:ITAL] ([URL]<: accessed [CD3]>), entry for <[CD1]> and< [CD2]><, married [CD4]>; citing< [ORIGINAL PUBLISHER]>< "[SHORT TITLE]";>< [CD5]><; [CD6]>. Neither ORIGINAL PUBLISHER nor SHORT TITLE are populated in this particular Source, but even if they are populated (using a quick X and Y to populate them) the results are the same when CD5 is empty. My citation detail is (copy and paste - note the space in CD5) Robert V L Haxby||Alice E Ozias||29 April 2012||5 November 1910|| ||FHL microfilm 1380445 Which produces (using a Family Group Sheet or Individual Detail reports) "Minnesota, Marriages, 1849-1950," database, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org: accessed 29 April 2012), entry for Robert V L Haxby and Alice E Ozias, married 5 November 1910; citing; FHL microfilm 1380445. My short footnote template is "[TITLE]," [RECORD TYPE], record for [CD1] and [CD2]<, married [CD5]> citing< [ORIGINAL PUBLISHER]>< "[SHORT TITLE]";>< [CD5]><, [CD6]>. Which produces "Minnesota, Marriages, 1849-1950," database, record for Robert V L Haxby and Alice E Ozias citing, FHL microfilm 1380445. If I change my citation detail to not include a space for CD5 thus Robert V L Haxby||Alice E Ozias||29 April 2012||5 November 1910||||FHL microfilm 1380445 It produces "Minnesota, Marriages, 1849-1950," database, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org: accessed 29 April 2012), entry for Robert V L Haxby and Alice E Ozias, married 5 November 1910; citing. And the short footnote produces "Minnesota, Marriages, 1849-1950," database, record for Robert V L Haxby and Alice E Ozias citing. Your suggestion to use the escape character '\ ' did not work nor does using two spaces. Since your experience is different it would appear that there is something in my template that is causing the behavior but I have been unable to figure it out as to what that would be. Also I tried TMGU commands append and prepend but neither worked. I also tried ASCII character 255 but that also did not work. Tom
I've got my custom Journal Report producing html for my family website. I have two things I'd like to know how to accomplish, with y'all's help: 1) is there a way to have automatically inserted ahead of the spouse information in the Journal Report the word "SPOUSE"? As I read the generated report, it is not automatically clear to me when it transitions to providing spouse information and I'd like this text to be automatically inserted to mark that transition. 2) Can I add left and right margin space, in TMG, for the html version of the report? My reports display on the website flush to the left side of the screen. Or do I have to insert a narrow column on the website page to shove everything over a bit? I rarely have a situation of printing Exhibit where "one size fits all. If I used that thinking for my Exhibits, a few would be fine and show well, while others would be too small and others too big. Most of my printed Exhibits are single and group pictures with some single pictures being cropped from a group picture. I very rarely print reports with census images, certificates, or the like as most are too big to start with and making them smaller to fit the page often makes them too small to read as Tom notes. Conversely, increasing the size of some Exhibits can (if scanned at a low resolution) may make them too fuzzy to read (one reason to scan nearly everything in high resolution. I generally scan in the highest resolution available to me knowing that I will very often print them in a smaller size/resolution. It is easy to downsize an image to a lower resolution whereas you can't increase the resolution once scanned (without re-scanning). Years ago, when computer storage was more expensive (I'm talking about a hard disk that is smaller than one high resolution image file today), it made sense to scan at lower resolution. But with a terabyte drive being almost the smallest one sees on a new computer, it is better to scan at the highest resolution and then work from that down to what is needed. Also, let me point out a feature of TMG (v8 and v9) that has not been mentioned when the various Exhibits to be printed are not a mix. That is, when the Exhibits are all either person images, group images or documents. So if you have a mix of these, ignore this option or de-select as it is not a one size fits all option. In addition to using various image editors to re-sizing Exhibit files for report printing, note that TMG can automatically reduce the size of Exhibits to a maximum size that you set on the Exhibits tab of the Report Definition Screen [Options] window. This setting is for the maximum heighth and width in either inches or centimeters (inches or centimeters is selected in Preferences). If you wish, you can restrict this resizing (e.g., downsizing) to person images only. Otherwise, TMG will resize (if selected) all images. Note that this is kind of a "one size fits all" option although it doesn't try to increase the size of an image. Still, it can help reduce the workload of preparing Exhibits for printing. I usually select the option and set the max values as about 2.5" H x 2.0" W. which seems to me a reasonable size for a person image. As noted, in many cases, it is not a one size fits all option; but it can be useful. Give it a try for all images and for only person images and see how it does for you. It may give you some ideas. Ann, You said, " Scan anything I have to scan as a TIF, using the suggested sizes in Ottawa TMG Group guides using info..." Would like to clarify my recommendations in order to avoid miscommunication or possible misunderstanding. Similar to other folks recommendations, I typically scan family history photos, documents, certificates, etc in "tif" format as you note above. I do not scan "using the suggested sizes in Ottawa TMG Group guides" (your comment above). Instead, I scan in "high resolution," mostly 600 dpi, 24 bit color and sometimes higher e.g., slides and very small photos at 1200 dpi (or higher). One of the more recent Ottawa presentations can be found here: http://ottawa-tmg-ug.ca/articles_&_presentations_archives_2014.htm, the presentation titled "Suggested Image Sizes for TMG & Second Site - a Revisit, by David Walker (11 January, 2014)." The suggested sizes in the chart are made for viewing on the internet, specifically in a Second Site website. The Ottawa report recommends scanning at high resolution and notes that the chart sizes are achieved by "re-sizing" images based on their purpose / use and not a one size for all. I do use batch conversions, for selected similar types of images and sometimes go one by one, it varies. Example: Census pages are mostly large size to begin with and if you downsize to one size fits all, they may be too small to view/read. Some TMG users (me included) use a portrait (head shot) sometimes cropped out of a photo for the TMG primary exhibit. This portrait size is obviously smaller than a census document. If I have a folder of scanned images say... from an old photo album, I may batch re-size the "landscape" photos separate from the "portrait" oriented photos. A couple additional comments regarding your list message below. Second Site's alternative exhibit folder (for TMG exhibits) cannot contain subfolders (to the best of my knowledge it is one folder for all exhibits). The exhibits in the SS alternative exhibit folder do have to be identical in name to the TMG exhibits (which may be in one or many folder or subfolders). You do not need a SS alternative exhibit for each TMG exhibit; it is there to use if you want to downsize an image for better website viewing. You can "see" the difference for yourself if you make a SS website and include images, and view ones that you did not downsize; if it was scanned or saved at a higher resolution or say... 300 or 600 dpi instead of say... 95 dpi the image will be hugely oversized on the screen and you have to scroll huge amounts around (not very effective to view).f Also, note that SS provides options to include "exhibit galleries" and "image galleries" in websites. Exhibit galleries are made from TMG exhibits. Image galleries can be any images and do not have to be TMG exhibits. So, for example, I include image galleries, sometimes from say... an old tintype photo album where I don't want to attach the tintype images as TMG exhibits. Similarly, for an old wedding album, etc. In TMG, I may add an event noting and describing the old tintype or wedding album, etc, and include a sentence (hidden from TMG reports) providing a link in a SS website to the "image gallery." These image gallery "images" are located in the SS input folder and in my case, I organize them in subfolders and they have nothing to do with the SS alternative exhibits folder. Sorry if this is confusing, but it may provide you or others some ideas to explore further. Sam wondered: > Can one search for people lacking a certain tag... As Lee mentioned, if your search is only a "lack" of one condition most filters can handle that. However, like Lee, whenever I want multiple "negative" conditions I have found setting a Flag to be the quickest and most understandable for me. I create a Flag with default "N" and other value "Y". Now I run an appropriate report filtered for the "positive" or "presence" of one of the conditions (e.g. "does" have this tag). I use the Secondary Output to set the Flag to "Y" for these people. I can then run multiple such reports as needed for the various "positive" conditions. Maybe List of People or List of Events depending upon which has the best filter for the specific condition of interest. When all done I can either use a List of People report, or the Project Explorer, filtered for people where the Flag (still) equals "N", which will be the negative. Hope this gives you ideas, Michael
Tom Fulton asked: > I am trying to have TMGU insert a space in a citation detail field... Hi, Tom, First, I have not tried it, but you might try escaping the space using the backslash character: '\ ' I "think" TMGU recognizes this, but try it with the "Log only" option to see what you get. > The reasons I want a space in CD4 are... > if CD4 is completely empty, that is it contains no space, > then when TMG creates a report it does not proceed beyond the > blank field when creating the footnote. Hmmm... I cannot reproduce this behavior. What does your Footnote template look like? I have tried using a template like: Other stuff<, [CD1]><, [CD2]><, [CD3]><, [CD4]><, [CD5]><, [CD6]>. This outputs the later CD parts whether an earlier one has a space or is completely empty. What are you doing differently? What version of TMG? Michael
TMG-L members, I am working on a new program that will have many of the features of Second Site but will use a GEDCOM file for the input data. I made a lot of progress in the fall, but then I had to postpone working on the project for several months due to some other obligations. I have been actively working on it lately and making good progress. I've been getting a lot of messages from people asking for a progress report. Rather than answer messages one at a time, I'm creating a mailing list. I'll send status updates to the list now and then. This will be an "announcements only" list, i.e., members will not be able to send messages/responses to other list members. If you would like to join the list, please reply to me OFF-LIST. John

Would an ASCII character 255 (non-breaking space) work for your purpose? It's invisible, but acts like a visible character. To create it on a PC, hold down the Alt-key, and type 255 on the NUMBER pad (not the top row). When you release the Alt-key, the character will be inserted. (BTW, this works for any ASCII character). Of course, if you're working with a laptop with an embedded number pad, this can be a major nuisance to enter each character. It's possible you could create a macro to perform all the steps, though I'm not sure about that. If you're working with a laptop, you might want to buy a USB external keyboard to simplify such tasks. Is that possible? You can use the List of People report for either of these. The "military service" part may be a bit harder in that you would probably have to run the report multiple times -- each filtering for one or more different Tag Types depending on what Tags have been used for military service. For example, you might have a filter like: Milit-Beg... # of Tags =Equals 0 END Then you might have essentially the same filter for any other military serice Tags that have been used. Using Custom Flags to "track" the different combinations of persons having Flags set/not set and/or set with various settings, y6ou could realize your goal. For those born before a date without a Death Tag, a similar filter to the above for the Death Tag AND a filter like: Birth... Date < Comes before [?] END would give those candidates for a Death Tag Lee
I am trying to have TMGU insert a space in a citation detail field (in this case CD4). I have enter a space in the Change Detail4 field, but when I run Change Citation Parts command a CD4 field is created but it contains no space. Also if the Source Number already contains a space in CD4, the space is stripped out and CD4 then contains nothing. (I should mention that I am also changing CD5 and that goes according to plan.) The reasons I want a space in CD4 are: 1) I can easily count the number of CD fields; 2) if CD4 is completely empty, that is it contains no space, then when TMG creates a report it does not proceed beyond the blank field when creating the footnote. As an example if CD4 has a space CD5 will produce FHL microfilm 005000 but if CD4 has no space then CD5 (even though populated with FHL microfilm 005000) will not be included in the footnote to the report. Hope someone has and idea for workaround Tom Fulton
