    1. Re: [TMG] Project/data set "organization"
    2. John Cardinal via
    3. Lee et al, I do something similar, but I do not use parent/child relationships. For my "Bezanson" surname research, I have a pseudo-person named "Orphan Bezanson". When I encounter someone (or someone and his family) that I cannot link to the existing tree, I add an "Orphan" custom tag where P1 is "Orphan Bezanson" and P2 is the person that I can't yet link to a Bezanson parent. With this setup, I can go to "Orphan Bezanson" and see a list of events that pseudo-person shares with all the so-called orphans, so I have an easy to use collection of research problems to investigate and solve. For my Orphan tag, I have three roles: Collection (for the P1 pseudo-person), Orphan (for the person whose connection/parents are unknown), and Solved (for ex-orphans). I use some sentences for those roles that are configured to support my Bezanson web site. Collection: [:CR:][:CR:][:NP:][:TAB:]<[R:Orphan]><[BOLD:]Solved:[:BOLD] [R:Solved]>< ([LSPO])><[M0]> Orphan: I have not discovered [SFS] connection to the known [RL:Collection] lineage <[M]> Solved: I learned [SFS] connection to the known [RL:Collection] lineage <[M]> Note that [LSPO] is a sentence variable that is only supported by Second Site, and not by TMG. It produces a lifespan. It's not necessary but makes my SS-produced index more useful. To see the system in action, go to this page: http://bezansons.com/ui48.htm That page is a "Custom Index" in Second Site that is essentially a list of the events for "Orphan Bezanson". (That pseudo person is not part of the site otherwise.) The list uses the "Collection" sentence above because that is Orphan Bezanson's role in all the shared events. Those shared events also appear in the person page entries for the people listed. Note the entry for Derek Adrian N. Bezanson. He is marked as "Solved". If you click the link to go to his person page entry, you'll see a note at the top that gives credit to John Cordes, the fellow-researcher (and TMG user!) who helped me resolve how Derek connected to the tree. I hope this helps or provides inspiration. John

    3. I have one huge project (upwards of 50K people and growing) and I use flags and accents to visually (on the screen) separate the lines and to generate reports and Second Site output. There is so much overlap with sources that it just makes sense - and of course it reveals connections between different lines as well. 3. Sam, I'd use one project unless you expect to enter more than a few hundred thousand people. Even then, I'd consider how many people and sources would be entered in more than one project if you were to split them. With one project, you enter common sources once. You define custom tags once. You search for people in one project, not multiple projects. Etc. John

    3. Sam asked: > I've finally decided to ... start to do something about > the dozens of loose leaf binders and notebooks I have... Good idea, Sam. I suspect getting the data into TMG will help you discover a number of otherwise unsuspected linkages. > I've started scanning one binder saving each page as a jpg. Hmmm... If I were doing this I would not bother with scanning. I would just create appropriate TMG Sources of these records. I would create a TMG "Repository" of my file cabinet. Then I would use some kind of numbering system on these records to help locate the actual paper whenever desired, and enter that number as the TMG Repository Reference. > However, I'm up in the air about what to do about entering this > information into TMG Whether or not you scan all of them, if you want to enter this actual source information into TMG, you might consider something like my custom "Transcript" tag. I use that for transcribing a source which includes several people, like your family group sheets. Each person can be linked to that one tag with their own memo text containing the transcription of their information from that source. Thus all those people are linked to this one source transcription, as well as linking the scanned file as an exhibit to that one tag. The description of "My Transcript Tag Exhibits" in the "Guide to Sources" chapter of my on-line book also includes a link to the details of my custom _Transcript_ tag in the "Custom Tag Type Descriptions" chapter. http://www.mjh-nm.net/SRCGUIDE.HTML#TranscriptExhibits You wondered whether to: > keep each family separate or just have one gigantic database... > As these families... are from the same area... > there may be all sorts of connections between some people in > the different families one single database would reveal. Because of this I would definately vote with others who have replied to keep them in the same project/dataset. If you only have 15+ families, then I would use a FLAG with 15+ values to identify the family a person comes from. Be sure to include the FLAG in your various Add Person templates so you can easily give the people the appropriate value as you add them. Even if you have too many different families for the single character values of a single FLAG, you could use two FLAGs, one to define a "group" (e.g. A,B,C...) of families and the second to define a subgroup (e.g. 1,2,3...) within that group. This would allow you to Flag people as coming from families "A1" through "Z9". If these are new families, don't overlook TMG's relatively new feature to add a whole family at once in a spreadsheet-like screen. See the TMG HELP topic: "Add Multiple People Screen". Finally, as you are adding these "currently" unrelated families you are likely to notice possible duplicates of people which might link families together. You may wish to use something like my custom "Duplicate" tag. It "temporarily" records such possibilities by linking the two potential duplicate people until you find documentation to satisfy yourself they are the same person and can then Merge these two people. See: http://www.mjh-nm.net/TAGCUSTM.HTML#DuplicateTag Good luck in your data entry tasks, Sam, and hope this gives you ideas, Michael

    3. Kathryn, There's no easy way to do what you want in TMG Utility. One issue is that you can't change the tag type selectively except based on a flag. The flag is at the _person_ level, but a single person may have multiple Note tags, and so one qualifying event for a person could cause all that person's Note tags to be changed. Are there are lot of events to change? If so, contact me off-list. John

For instance, there were 30 people involved in the xyz that prompted the question. I cleaned them up manually while waiting for an answer. The next one I encountered, there are 78 people with "abc" instead of xyz. I'll try Donald's suggestion on Thu with those. I'm sure I'll eventually encounter "fgh" that has a couple hundred people involved, which is why I'm trying to find a way to automate as much as I can. -- Kathryn Rhinehart Bassett (Pasadena CA) "Genealogy is my bag" "GH is my soap" kathryn@bassett.net http://bassett.net

    1. Re: [TMG] Cardinal's Utility
    2. Donald W. Range via
    3. Kathryn, As I understand it you have tag types of Note (a standard tag type) and Source (a custom tag type) in use in your project, and both of these are in the Other Event tag group. If this is correct, I can see two ways to handle most of your cases for your problem (1), but not necessarily all. Which method is best depends on how many people have multiple Note tags, one of which has xyz in its memo. Method A: In TMG, create a new flag called XYZMEMO or similar with possible values ? Y, then use the Secondary Output of a List of Events report to set that flag to Y for all people who have a Note event tag with xyz in the tag memo. In TMG-Utility, use the Events/Change Event Type feature to change from Note type to Source type. Set a flag filter to require that the XYZMEMO flag have value of Y. This should change the Note tags to Source tags for all people with one or more Note tags with xyz in the tag memo. A possible downside is that if any of those people have more than one Note tag, all their Note tags would be changed to Source tags even if not all of them contained xyz. Method B: In TMG, create a new flag called XYZMEMO or similar with possible values ? Y, then use the List of People report to find all the people for whom the # of Note tags=1 AND Note Memo Contains xyz. Use the Secondary Output of that report to set that flag to Y for all people who have only one Note event tag which has xyz in the tag memo. In TMG-Utility, use the Events/Change Event Type feature to change from Note type to Source type. Set a flag filter to require that the XYZMEMO flag have value of Y. This should change the Note tags to Source tags for all people with only one Note tag, and it has xyz in the tag memo. A possible downside is that if any of your people have more than one Note tag their Note tags would not be changed to Source tags even one or more of them contained xyz. If one of the above methods solves problem (1), that takes us to problem (2), adding a citation to the existing Source tags with xyz in the tag memo. I don't see a way to do that directly, but you could use TMG-Utility's Events/Add Events feature to create new source tags with the desired citation. That feature requires you to create a text file containing the ID numbers of the people for whom the new tag is to be added, plus the citation, date, tag memo, etc. You can export a List of People with flag XYZMEMO=Y to a text file to get this started, then add whatever other info is needed to fit the TMG-U format requirement. I'm not sure what you are trying to accomplish by using Source tags, rather than attaching source citations to Note tags. If you prefer to attach source citations to Note tags currently containg xyz in their memos you might be able do something similar to the above Add Events process to create new Note tags containing the attached source citation, then use TMG-Utility's Tags/Delete Tags by Type feature to delete the original Note tags, using the option to "Retain if has citation" in combination with the filter for flag XYZMEMO=Y to avoid deleting the newly created note tags with citations or deleting Note tags without citations which don't have xyx in the tag memo. If all this sounds like it could cause unintended consequences in your project, that's because it could. So follow the usual TMG-Utility recommendations to back up your project first, run in log-only mode and check results in the log before proceeding, and check the modified project carefully before moving on with new data entry adventures. -----Original Message----- From: tmg-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:tmg-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Kathryn at Gwens via Sent: Tuesday, July 28, 2015 12:49 PM To: TMG@rootsweb.com Subject: [TMG] Cardinal's Utility Is this possible in the Utility? 3. This discussion about the Data_paths.txt file interests me because if I understood it better, maybe it could help me with an unsolved problem. I posted the following on the list a few weeks ago but have never found out whether anything can be done to fix the worst part of my problem. Some of my questions were answered, thanks to Terry, so I have edited my question down, but the basic problem is still there. When dealing with a problem generating PDF reports with TMG (problem now solved), I uninstalled and reinstalled TMG 9.05, using a setup file in My Documents/TMG9 folder, but something went wrong, because the program I have now is not working correctly. I can run it, and work with my data, which is OK as far as I know, and the About TMG screen says I have v 9.05, but so far I've noticed the following: 1) The Welcome screen always has Last greyed out, so I always have to select my project. 2) Nothing happens when I click on Help, or Help Contents, in the Help menu. F1 doesn't do anything either. 3) When I first click the icon to start TMG, a little box of irregular shape flashes on and off a couple of times before the welcome screen appears. Not a problem, but might be a clue to what is going on. Also, in case this might be a clue to my problem, the first time I opened my project after reinstalling, the person who was displayed was someone I last edited in July 2014 - sometime before version 9.05. Now that I have restored my latest backup it opens to the person I last edited. But the two problems remain. I'll really appreciate some guidance. If a possible issue with Data_Paths.txt isn't the cause, does anybody have any ideas what might be? Joan Lince

"Married" is usually given as her occupation on the electoral roll. (Without going into further details, my relative should be aware of this as it does explain important details about her Grandmother) I can also add the electoral roll for Grandma's husbands but these would only show up on their details. What I would like is to have Grandma's Husbands and childrens Electoral Rolls on each person's details rather than suggesting that my relative go to each of the family member's. I am wondering whether it would be easier and best to go to each of the family members and change the Electoral Roll Tag at the top left to the Residence Tag [:CR:] [:CR:] [:TAB:] [P] <and [PO]> <and [WO]> lived <at [M1],> <in [L]><[D]> <([M2])> So I would be able to add in her spouse as Principal2 and the children as Witnesses and add each person's occupation at that time in <([M2])>, probably as 'Electoral Roll gives occupation as ....) Maybe I am wrong, but the use here of the Electoral Roll Tags sounds very much like a census by a different name as the resulting data is similar -- showing that persons were in residence in a place, held various occupations, and other information How the data is entered into TMG is more often the choice of a user than any set rule. In most cases, I have separate Tags for each "major" piece of data. That is, a Birth Tag records the age and birthplace, an Occupation Tag for that information, and the Census Tag to record the fact of enrollment on the census. The census can also support Marriage and Parent-Child Relationship Tags. As for the census Tag itself, I usually place the Head of Household as Principal #1 and all others in the household as Witnesses. The exceptions to this last is if one or more of the household are merely lodgers, boarders, or otherwise not related in which case they are often ignored (although sometimes they unrelated persons may wind up being related later and for that resaon are then included). I do not enter a Residence Tag as well as Census Tag as that seems to be redundant to me as the presence of the Census Tag implies residence in my opinion. On the other hand, using a Residence Tag instead of a Census Tag would remove any ambiguity that might be seen. The questions here is whether I (the user) make the decision whether being on the census meant the person resided there or whether a reader made the decision. Whatever Tag is used, the Source would be the same. I prefer the Census Tag myself in that it shows both the fact of the census event as well as implies residence while the Residence Tag does the same except the fact of the census event is "hidden" in footnotes/endnotes. If I am making the right comparison above regarding Electoral Rolls and Censuses then I don't think you are missing anything other than the philosophy of Tag choice and the various implications, redundancies, etc. I tend to use the multiple Tags idea rather than record everything in one Tag because this allow me greater control over the sentences in the output. On the other hand, I have used a single Tag on occasion to achieve a different "sound" to the output. Actually, I could achieve different "sounds" using either method -- the difference being how much work I want to put into things and this will vary depending on which Tags/Roles I use and what I want in the output. Sometimes I prefer A and other times B. There have also been time when I used C (usually a mix of A & B).<g> Lee
