I hate it when people respond with what they think the questions is rather than understanding what it actually is, and that's exactly what I did last night. I shouldn't reply late at night. :-( You are right - when you merge data sets custom flags from one of the data sets should retain the value previously set for those people from that data set, and be set to the default for those in the other data set. But you said that's not what you see. I've not tested this in ages, and didn't think there were any changes in this area in recent versions. What I find when I test now is that is works correctly if the custom Flag is in the receiving data set, but it does not when the custom flag is in the sending data set. I think this later case is what you found. I thought it used to work correctly in either direction, but it's been years since I've tested it. That's an unfortunate bug since it limits what you can do with flags when merging. If there is only one custom flag involved you can work around it by controlling the direction of the merge , but that means you lose control of the re-numbering. Terry

The people in the newly merged data set are assigned the default value of the flag. What did you expect to happen? You either need to assign the people in the first data set a different value, or change the default after you create the flag. If everyone in that data set is to have a single value, create the Flag with that value a default (that is, the first value). Then, change the default to the value you want assigned after the merge. Doing this will not change the value set for those people already in the first data set. Terry Reigel
What I expect is for a data set merge to preserve the value of a flag from the source into the target if it was defined and had a specific value in the source data set.

I defined a flag From_B = (?NY) in B. I set the flag From_B to Y in all of B. The flag does not yet exist in A. What I did was to merge B into A. The flag showed up in A as From_B = (?NY). I expected all the original members of A to have ? (the default) as the flag value and all the new imported members from B to have the flag value preserved as Y. Instead every body is ?. Should I have defined the flag in A myself and reset the default in A to Y before merging? Do the flag definitions in A and B have to be identical when they both exist, including defaults, for a merge to be successful? The result that I want is for the flag From_B to be ? for old members of A and Y for those I merged in from B. Thanks, David
I am trying to merge two data sets. I want to label the source with a flag so that I can easily identify all its members in the target. I created a flag, "source_data" with the default values (?,N,Y) in the source data set and set its value to Y. This flag does not exist in the target. When I merge the source into the target the value of the flag is set to ? for everybody including those from the source. I expected that the old target members would have ? but that the new members merged (imported) from the source would retain the value of Y that I had set. Is this a bug or am I doing something wrong? I have researched the behavior in Terry Riegel's tips and in the TMG archive and it seems as though what I expect should work. I am using TMG9.05.

Morning list, FWIW I wanted to let everyone know about my experience upgrading to Windows 10. It has been 1 ½ days since the upgrade was done and everything has gone perfectly and flawlessly. Although not an expert at TMG, every function I have been using in the past has been working after the upgrade and in general TMG seems to be responding a little bit faster. I haven't checked TGMU or SS5 yet but I expect them to work as well as before. Anyway that's my 2¢ worth. After having to reinstall TMG 9.05 following a hard drive failure I find that the endnote and the source superscript numbers are Roman numerals. How can I change them to regular numbers? I had this problem years ago and was told how to fix it, but I don't remember how it was done. Thanks, John Wood
John Wood asked: > After having to reinstall TMG 9.05... the endnote > and the source superscript numbers are Roman numerals. Donald posted an old reference, but this is a known remaining bug in the final Version 9.05. See my on-line document of that list of bugs: http://www.mjh-nm.net/BUGS.HTML#B38 That identifies what triggers the bug, and the "work around". Michael
John, Check http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/tmg/2012-07/1341163655 for a fix that applied to ver 8. It may also apply to your issue. -----Original Message----- From: tmg-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:tmg-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of John and Lee Wood via Sent: Saturday, August 01, 2015 1:29 PM To: TMG Subject: [TMG] Changing Endnote Numbering from Roman Numerals After having to reinstall TMG 9.05 following a hard drive failure I find that the endnote and the source superscript numbers are Roman numerals. Ines, As I read the description of the procedure you followed, I get the impression that you may have missed one step: selecting all the people in the Project Explorer, after the application of your Filter. When you first apply a filter only one person is marked as Selected, among the names which appear in the list in the PE; this would explain the result you describe. To select everyone: click on the first person, scroll to the bottom of the list and hold the Shift key while clicking on the last name in the list (the old Windows way of selecting multiple records). Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be a direct "Select All" feature in TMG, at least not that I could find, in this context. Another way would be to right click on one of the names in the filtered PE and tell TMG to add all names to a Focus Group. You have mentioned 'focus group' but I'm not sure you're really using that term in the TMG technical sense. I have the feeling you may just be referring to the individuals selected by running your filter in the PE. Hope this helps, John Cordes ________________________________________ From: tmg-bounces@rootsweb.com <tmg-bounces@rootsweb.com> on behalf of Ines Mannhardt via <tmg@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, July 31, 2015 9:42 PM To: tmg@rootsweb.com Subject: [TMG] export of certain people Hello all, I want to export some people of one of my databases to a German website which needs to be done via Gedcom or type all 825 names. Thanks, Lorna, that's food for thought. I have Second Site so may have to concentrate on it. Incidentally, I am still trying to come to grips with GedMatch. Garry, I have my entire database (considerable) generated into Second Site as a private web version of my site - witnesses and all. Which can then be read using GoodReader. Hi, Rick and Sheila, Thanks for your emails. Rick, I was going to create pdf files upfront, but my Lexmark X2600 would screw up when I tried to create a multi-page pdf file after scanning about 50 sheets as pdfs. It would say I had no rights to save to disk or say there was not enough memory, so after wasting several hours the first couple of days scanning and re-scanning and wondering what I had done wrong when the program balked, I thought to heck with it and created jpgs instead as there are programs which will create a pdf file from jpgs. Even then the Lexmark also seems to have some kind of buffer/memory limit which meant that every 50 scans or so, even with scans as jpgs, it would stop. I would then close the program and start over. Once I got used to its quirks, no problems from then on. [Ah, and as jpgs, I could use Irfanview to go in and black out that terribly embarrassing "geneology" at the top of some sheets. Hah.] Sheila, well, not going to jump ship yet. Maybe when some super duper new program hits the market, makes the news and catches my attention. Ugh, now am I really going to throw out the paper??? Yi yi yi. Maybe I can just box the papers up and let my sister throw the box out when I die.
