Teresa, I'd not expect the report to use the default settings in Word since it has it's own setting - you can't have two sets working on the same document. To access the settings in TMG click the Properties button in the lower half of of the Report Definition screen. Terry Reigel

John, If she wants something free, why not use the ZIP features built into Windows? It's obviously free, and couldn't be much simpler to use. To un-ZIP, simply click on the ZIPed folder and drag the desired files to another location, or right-click on the folder and choose Extract All. To Zip a file or files, right-click and choose Send To > Commpressed (zipped) Folder. Terry Reigel

None of the default paths are automatically updated when you move your data from one version of TMG to another, or from one computer to another. I recommend you check all the paths specified in your various project files to see if they are valid and sending data where you intend. My article on Merging, which covers this issue, was last updated in Apr 2005, when TMG 6 was new. And I don't know that the part that covers this issue was updated then - it may have been last tested with TMG 5. I know Jim and I spent a large amount of time with the developers trying to get the Merge Data Sets feature to work in a reasonably logical way, and I think that was when multiple Data Sets were first introduced with TMG 5. I believe this article was first written when or soon after TMG 5 was released. I never merge data sets so I'm sure I've not looked at the issue in years. Thanks to your testing we now know we did all correctly understand how it was supposed to work, and that it did change without anyone noticing. > In summary as Terry noted, as of Version 8 the only way to retain the > old values from the sending dataset is to first create a flag of the > same name in the receiving dataset. Actually, I noted that it works correctly if the custom Flag is created and set in the "receiving" data set. It did not occur to me that you can make it work with the flag in the "sending" data set provided you create one of the same name in the other data set too, which I think is what you are saying you found works. If so, that does provide a workable work-around as long as one knows it is required. Terry Reigel

Yep, I guess these changes/bugs can happen. The fact that no one noticed before now is probably an indicator of how seldom people merge with custom Flags in the "sending" dataset which do not exist in the "receiving" data set. > ... you can make it work with the flag in the "sending" data set > provided you create one of the same name in the other data set too, > which I think is what you are saying you found works. Yes. If you want to retain the values of a custom Flag in the "sending" data set, all that is required is to create a custom Flag with the exact same name in the "receiving" data set. [Hmmm... I think the names are case insensitive, but should probably retest that. Later...] You do not even have to create the same list of values in the "receiving" data set (although it would probably be wise to do so). The people from the "sending" data set will retain their Flag values even if such values are not in the list of defined values for that Flag in the receiving data set. A bit wierd to see people with values which are not in the defined list and thus cannot be set manually, but it works. > ... that does provide a workable work-around as long as one knows > it is required. Yes, it takes an extra step first to create the custom Flags, but otherwise everything works as one would probably expect. Michael

David, I also thought it worked the way that you expected and Terry stated! My on-line book has a separate chapter on Merging which focuses on what happens to the merging of custom TMG features. Its section on "Merging Data Sets" described merging Custom Flags as behaving exactly the way we all expected. However, since I still have old versions of TMG installed I tested this merging today in various earlier versions. The behavior we expected and described *was* the behavior in Version 7.04 (which is the last version where I tested this specific issue). Testing now shows that the behavior is different in Version 8.08, and the final Version 9.05 retains that different behavior. I have retested merging custom flags, and just updated its description in that section on "Merging Data Sets" of my on-line book so it now reflects both its old and new behavior since Version 8: http://www.mjh-nm.net/IMEXPORT.HTML#MergingDataSets In summary as Terry noted, as of Version 8 the only way to retain the old values from the sending dataset is to first create a flag of the same name in the receiving dataset. I agree with Terry and believe this is a bug whose changed behavior since Version 8 us beta testers did not catch. I have added a description of this unexpected behavior and its work-around in my on-line page of remaining outstanding bugs. http://www.mjh-nm.net/BUGS.HTML#B92 Hope this helps explain what you are seeing and how to get what you want, Michael
