    3. In Afghanistan we used fairly cheap digital cameras that recorded the GPA location when the photograph is taken. Can't remember the makes or models, but I seem to recall that they were <$200. We needed to photograph objects built with donor funding and "prove" that they were where they were supposed to be and this was accurate enough for that. I would like to get a second one >that I could use for the purpose of getting destination GPS coordinates. Unfortunately the manuals available on-line are so simplified I can't even tell what features remain in the units. It sounds like you have a "car navigation" unit which are pretty much worthless without their built-in street maps (to which they "snap" to nearest street when there are satellite accuracy errors). The cheapest units I'm familiar with suited for off-road use were the Garmin eTrex units, but the current set (10, 20, 30) share a manual that has simplified operations so much that to create waypoints (I know, the opposite of what you want to do, but still of import) requires doing "mark waypoint" (make CURRENT location a waypoint) and THEN editing the coordinates. I can't find information on map datums or coordinate systems supported. (But it does add GLONASS satellites with the GPS satellites). Heck, even the GPSMAP 78 manual has been simplified so much I don't know what it does. My units are obsolete (they still have BUTTONS, no touch screen) but had much more detailed stuff (the GPSMAP 76CSx even has a program for various parachute jumping options taking into account winds at altitudes and high vs low opening of the chute). Don't know if the same units are available in Canada -- the eTrex 10 is listed at US$ 110, and the GPSMAP 78 at US$ 200 (same as the eTrex 20x). After those entry-level units, you rapidly hit the US$300 to 500 range. GPSMAP 64 (GLONASS capable, quadrifilar helix antenna*) US$ 250. Main thing is that you are looking for a hiking/geocaching type unit -- though best to check in stores to see how difficult it is to retrieve location information. Even if it doesn't have a live coordinate display, you should be able to get the coordinates out of the saved waypoint edit feature. * quadrifilar helix antennas can be identified by an ~4 inch rod sticking out of the unit. They work best with satellites that are toward the horizon and are somewhat dead to birds overhead. However, position accuracy is better when the satellites are diversely spaced. Most units use a patch antenna instead, which is better at picking up overhead birds but makes for a smaller unit. -- bieber.genealogy@earthlink.net Dennis Lee Bieber HTTP://home.earthlink.net/~bieber.genealogy/

    3. Good morning, Sorry for being OT, but I looking for some input from the list from those people who GPS to identify location coordinates for their genealogy. I currently have a unit that serves me well for general travel to locations but once I get there I cannot get the exact GPS coordinates of the destination. I would like to get a second one that I could use for the purpose of getting destination GPS coordinates. I'm not looking to spend an exorbitant price on one but a reasonable price. If a list member has any suggestions it would be greatly appreciated. 3. This is common with many e-mail systems. Some refuse to send attachments which are seen as potentially risky, while others refuse to accept them. The ruse of amending the file name sometimes works, but some systems are "clever" enough to reject those as well. To transmit such files is a pain. With an IT-literate person on the other end, one can use "ftp". If you have a web-site, you can set it up so that a "right-click / save-as" will work. As has been said - a CD-ROM is also good - though only if the person has a computer with a drive (many small laptops, tablets, etc, don't). Fun times. -----Original Message----- From: tmg-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:tmg-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Lee Hoffman/KY via Sent: 04 August 2015 19:18 To: john@heckels.org.uk; JEH; tmg@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [TMG] OT-recommendations for UnZip freeware At 8/4/2015 13:18, you wrote: >I use gmail and just did a test. Teresa, I'd not expect the report to use the default settings in Word since it has it's own setting - you can't have two sets working on the same document. You set the margins for *extra* left margin space by setting the gutter space in the Word document *after* TMG has printed the document to Word. In Word (with the document on the screen) you should change the margins to *include* a 0.5 in. left gutter in that document, only. That will give you a total 1 in. left margin (.5 gutter, plus .5 in. that TMG has dictated). It is not necessary or advisable (that would just create extra work because you would need to change the default back) to change the default margin settings for all future document margins in Word. After changing the margins to include the .5 in. gutter in Word for that document only, re-format the document on the screen. You can run the curser up or down the entire pages of the document to achieve a reformat but there are other ways of reformatting the document. Then you should be able to see the *extra* 1/2 in. on the left margin. John B. 1. [TMG] Error #14 -

    3. Thank you, Terry, for your comments. I didn’t switch to a new computer, just to the new TMG version. But, I’ll keep your words in mind when I eventually buy a new computer with Win10. I’ll read your article (and print it) and check all the paths in my project files. It was an article of yours ( Updating to TMG 8 from TMG 5,6, or 7) that I had printed and tucked into your Primer for TMG which led me to check the file name. Your Primer has been very helpful to me over the years, as has Lee’s Getting the Most out of TMG. It’s wonderful to have people like you two around to help us. I, also, use your website. I finally compared the File Name on the Individual Narrative that I was able to create and found that the 4-generation DIN file name was different. After changing the file name from C:\Documents and Settings\Glenda\My Documents. .. . to C:\Users\Glenda\Documents. . . . the report was created, opened in Word Perfect, and I was able to print it. This was the first time I?ve tried to create a report in v. 9.05, so it looks like the default path didn?t change for some reason upon installation. (I forgot to mention that I use Windows 7.) Glenda, That sounds like the result of installing TMG on a new computer and transferring your Project files. None of the default paths are automatically updated when you move your data from one version of TMG to another, or from one computer to another. I recommend you check all the paths specified in your various project files to see if they are valid and sending data where you intend. Details are in my "Moving" article, at http://tmg.reigelridge.com/new-computer-version.htm#paths

How do I go about not having a report name on the ID report? Teresa, You can't leave the name blank, as you discovered, because it resets. Nor can you put in just a space because ending spaces are stripped off. But you can put in any other character. A non-breaking space works and doesn't show up on the report. > and how do I get rid of the line with the flags and reference number. Don't > want it either. Options > Miscellaneous - un-checking "Flags" gets rid of the flags. Reference number? You mean the Reference field? It's on Option > Names Terry Reigel

    1. Re: [TMG] Left gutter

    3. Teresa, Do not set the margins in TMG for *extra* gutter space wanted before sending the document from TMG to Word, just leave the margin setting at the default in TMG. John B.
