The Principal's sentence is [P] <was appointed guardian|and [PO] were appointed guardians> of [WO] <[D]> <[L]> The Witness's sentence for males is [P] <was appointed as his guardian|and [PO] were appointed as his guardians> <[D]> <[L]> and the same for females with "his" replaced by "her." I also have roles defined for the tag (although I know you said you don't use custom roles) of Husband, Wife, Child1-Child5, and Ward, that allow a little more variation in sentence structure. > I often seem to have trouble building a tag at the step, "pick the group > that it most resembles". Not sure what you mean by this. I don't get this prompt when creating a Tag Type. Do you mean picking the Tag Group, in the General tab? -- Charlie Towne cetownegm@gmail.com

    3. Further thought: I'm thinking I may create a Tag Type "More" (or "Raw Data" or "Further") in which I can just refer to the file and nothing more, no date, no categorization (since the files often contain data for multiple tags). Rick Van Dusen On 8/10/2015 7:46 PM, Lee Hoffman/KY via wrote:

I know you don't want to use custom Roles, but I did. Here are my Roles and their Sentences: Principal: [:CR:][:TAB:][P] became the guardian of [R:Ward] <[D]><, [M]> Witness: ERROR - assign role of Ward Ward: After the death of [SPP] father, [P1]<, [WM1],> became [SPP] guardian <[D]> <[WM2]> I designed this to have the guardian entered as the first Principal, and assigned the standard Principal Role. The child is assigned the Role of Ward. With this design the ward can be entered either as the second Principal or as a Witness. If you don't want custom Role you could modify this to do that. > I often seem to have trouble building a tag at the step, "pick the group > that it most resembles". I think you are confusing Tag Types with Source Types. That wording appears when you create a custom Source Type. However, with new Tag Types you do have to choose a Tag Type Group, and you must do that before you save the new Tag Type, as you can't change it once you save it. But the choice is easy - unless you are creating custom Name, Relationship, Birth, Death, or Burial Tag Type, you always choose "Other Event." > Looking more for a straightforward tag, as I don't use custom roles. Why not? :-) Terry Reigel

    3. Oh, THANKS, Lee! You've just given me a way to procrastinate even more about converting data copied into text files into properly configured tags!<g> I expect I'll take this "lazy way" and simply make tags that refer to these text files until I get around to making the tags act like they should. 1. [TMG] External File References
    2. Lee Hoffman/KY via
    3. Some years ago, way back on TMG v4x and earlier, I often had text files that I had created about various persons that I researched. In order to speed up some of my data entry, I decided to include them in my TMG data set as they were with the intention of editing my data into TMG Tags or in some other way later. At that time, TMG had a nice way of handling those external text file. Fast forward to TMG v9x and I dig out an old TMG v4x data set that I had not looked at in more than ten years. I imported that data set into TMG v9x and began to look around. I noted the use of the external text files in that data set. I had not had occasion to use the feature since those early days. It is a nice feature and saves re-typing, or copy/pasting and still works in TMG v9x today. I doubt that many users know about it, so thought I'd mention it . To reference and external file in a TMG Tag, go to the Tag Memo and type in the File Path and File Name for the file -- preceded by an exclamation mark (!). For example, if the file name is Davis History.txt, and you have placed it in a folder named TextFiles in your TMG User Data Files folder, then you would enter the following in the Tag Memo field: "!C:\Users\username\My Documents\The Master Genealogist v9\TextFiles\Davis History.txt" (omitting the quotes). Now when you click on the [Memo] button. the Memo field will open in its own window as usual, but instead of showing the File Path of the External File, it will show the content of the file. The nice thing here is that you can edit that External File in the Memo field window just as if you opened the file in a text editor. See the Memo topic in TMG Help and scroll down about halfway for more information. Some tips -- 1. Be sure to type the File Path/File Name correctly!!! 2. Be sure the exclamation mark is the first character of the Memo field. and the File Path immediately follows it. You can type the entry directly into the Tag Memo field or open the Memo field window and enter it. If you do the later, click the [OK] button to close the window and then re-open it. If you make the entry and open the Memo field window and only see what you entered (File Path/FileName) then you made a mistake in entering it -- no exclamation mark, wrong spelling, or something like this. It is a nice feature. Try it, you may find it helpful. Lee

Yes, Karl, this bug has been around for a while and never did get fixed before development ceased. It is is my list of remaining bugs: http://www.mjh-nm.net/BUGS.HTML#B52 That entry notes this Filter does not work with the Project Explorer, but I am not surprised it also does not work with the List of People. I will update the bug report to include that. I notice, Karl, that you discovered on your own the workaround identified in that report of combining "# of Mothers" and "# of Fathers" Filters to focus on the appropriate people. I created and posted this list of remaining bugs specifically for users to search who encounter behavior in TMG they think may be a bug.
