It transfers my tmg database very easily and I think the screen display is far superior to the one provided by tmg. It only provides viewing facilities and is not a replacement for tmb and is a very easy way to carry all your data round with you and search it. phil -- Phil Stringer UK Genealogy - http://www.genuki.org.uk/

Arthur, I am not aware of any such code or switch. Using TMG and Second Site at the same time can lead to errors. I recommend against it, and if you encounter any errors while doing so, please do not contact me about it. You can trick SS into operating while using TMG. If you start SS first, and open the SDF file, you can then start TMG and open the project. You can operate that way as long as you do not try to make the site while TMG has the project open. Why do you need SS and TMG open at the same time? It's very useful to have TMG open while browsing the _site_ made by SS, but SS does not have to be running to browse a site it has made. John
I'm a very satisfied user of GedStar Pro for converting my TMG 9.05 database to a version running on my non-fancy (a Moto G 2nd gen) Android phone. I have it set so that after it finishes the database conversion the file for the phone is put into a folder on Google Drive, which is then trivial to find and load on the phone. This setup (or you can use DropBox, I believe) is automagically available in GedStar Pro -- no effort was required on my part. Has anyone on here used the software Gedstar for android operating systems? Would to take my info with me on my tablet. Any thoughts? Thanks. Gypsy
Michael, That's very interesting. I think I could easily use it without getting into roles. First time I've been to your site, though I know you've been mentioning your resources for a while now. As far as I recall, the Topic entry does not print in reports (in TMG). It is used as the label of the Exhibit thumbnail in the Exhibit Log and is useful for sorting and filtering the Exhibit Log. I believe PathWiz uses the Topic entry in its reports. Second Site uses the Topic as the Caption _if_ the Caption field is left blank. As for the Caption, it (if selected in the Report Definition Screen [Options] window=>Exhibits tab) is printed immediately under the Exhibit. Note that the options to center the Exhibit must be selected if the Caption is to be selected. There is no provision to have a caption if it is not centered. So if you want the caption, selected the centering option and then move the Exhibit and Caption to a text box in your word processor. Lee
Bob Geldart asked: > I would be interested if anyone has developed a Guardianship Tag... > Looking more for a straightforward tag, as I don't use custom roles. Well, Bob, I do use custom roles for my custom Guardian tag in the Other group. I developed it as a companion to my custom tags for Adoptions. I find creating custom roles no more difficult than creating the custom tags themselves. The "Custom Tag Type Descriptions" chapter of my on-line book describes my use of the Guardian tag's custom roles and split memo fields here: http://www.mjh-nm.net/TAGCUSTM.HTML#GuardianTag which includes a link to the sentence templates for its roles here: http://www.mjh-nm.net/SENTENCE.HTML#GuardianSentences Hope this gives you ideas, Michael
Rick Van Dusen asled" > Where might the Topic be useful or appear in output? > Where would the Caption appear in output? > Where do people find it useful to have and use captions? Hi Rick, In TMG the exhibit Name (aka Topic) is output under the thumbnail of each image in the Exhibit Log. As described in TMG HELP in the "Report Options: Exhibits" topic, several reports have an Exhibits option "With caption" which will output the Caption along with the image. I use Second Site as my output. From its description of Image Captions: http://ss.johncardinal.com/exhibits.htm "TMG exhibits have an explicit Caption field. If that field is empty, Second Site uses the exhibit Name [Topic] as the caption. If you do not want a caption, you should specify "--" as the first two characters in the Caption field." In Second Site if you specify "Images" as one of the User Items, the Caption (or Topic if Caption is blank) will be output under the thumbnail of each image on that page. I find that very useful. Further, Second Site can have a Picture User Item which can include the caption, and for advanced users there is a variable which will return the caption for the current exhibit. I use that variable on a custom page for exhibits I have as part of my site. Hope this gives you ideas, Michael
Basic questions: Where might the Topic be useful or appear in output? Where would the Caption appear in output? "Survey": Where do people find it useful to have and use captions? We have >290 such exhibits in just one of six projects. Yeah, I can see why you used "title" or as I'd call it, the name of the Exhibit. Essentially what the Abbreviation is for Sources. But, that's even easier to add than Captions or Descriptions since that tab is presented when the Exhibits Properties window is first opened. Still, it can be tedious if there are a lot. One way to speed up the process is to have a text file of the Exhibit names open in NOTEPAD (or whatever) and copy/paste to the Topic field. This assumes you already have such a file (or close to it). If not, it wouldn't be worth creating one in my opinion. Either way, I would not think the process would take more than a couple or three hours for a few hundred Exhibits. A lot would depend on the length of the topic, but having the Exhibit Log set to All Exhibits would allow you to add a Topic and step to the next Exhibit in 20 to 30 seconds. It could take a little longer if you have to decide on the content. But, Donald may be right that PathWiz may handle the job. Although, a quick glance doesn't appear to disclose that it would. Lee

In any case, there is not a global method for adding captions. The TMG Utility has three functions dealing with Exhibits (Export Images, Verify Exhibit Paths, and Edit Image Map). In addition, there is a Find and Replace function that deals with Exhibit Captions, Descriptions, and Topics. While the Find and Replace function could be used to effect global change of captions, it would not be in the way I believe you wish as it would only find a specific pattern and replace it with some other pattern. So you are left with manually opening each Exhibit and adding the caption -- a tedious project; but unless you have a large number of Exhibits, one that goes fairly quickly. Lee
Thanks, Lee. Sorry about the terminology. Actually, what I'm looking at is under Properties>General>Topic (which is "untitled)" on all the original exhibits). But yes, it might be nice to have captions (Properties>Description>Caption) also. Yes, going to be tedious (unless Donald's suggestion pans out). We have 290 such exhibits in just one of six projects. I believe PathWiz! has this capability. These exhibits were imported originally from Heredis. The links were okay at that time, but I don't know that we ever had titles. So my question is this: Is there any way to add titles to exhibits other than to open each one through the Exhibits Log and manually add a title? (I'm wondering if there's a way through TMGU or via a spreadsheet import, etc.)

In my case, the files are all well-written narratives, so I just used the Anecdote Tag. It prints nicely in the narrative reports. One thing just occurred to me. I don't know External Files are effected by Second Site. I have not tried it. Lee

Any suggestions appreciated Yes, an ID# with a "prefix" with a separating colon means that you have at least two data sets. Data set 1 would be your original one. You can look through your Picklist or the Project Explorer to see the different persons in the data sets. You can sort the Project Explorer (PE) by Data Set or ID number by selecting that in the Sort option near the top of the PE. This can help you select persons to see if they are duplicate and help decide what to do with them. You should be aware that a second (or more) data set _may_ be hidden allowing you to only see one of the multiple data sets. That is, one or more data sets may be inactive (disabled). To make sure all data sets are active (enabled), right-click on the PE and select to Manage Data Sets. If a data set has a check mark beside it then it is Enabled (active). To make a data set active, highlight it, and click on the [Enable] button at the lower right of the window. Lee Hoffman/KY

One way to do that is to open the Picklist and at the top set the Data Set to the second one, and see who appears. You could have added it by importing a GEDCOM file, or merging with another project. To remove the second one if you decide it is of no value, open Data Set Manager from the File menu, select the Data Set from the list that you want to remove, and click Delete. Terry Reigel
