My own person computer and work computer have had their hard disk replaced with "Flash Devices" (Solid State Disks). I would expect that most phones and tablets use similar grade flash for their memory. Now one thing that will slow things down is replacing RAM with flash (or Hard disk), and Phones and Tablets typically have a lot less RAM than your typical desk top, but an application like TMG isn't really that big as most of the data is off in the database, and not needed to be brought into ram until needed. -- Richard Damon

Yes, you can merge project A with project B (or vice versa). This means that the merged project will have two data sets (or more depending on how many data sets were in the original projects). However, I don't believe that you understand that each data set is _completely_ separate from all other data sets in the project. For example, Source ID# 1 in data set 1 will not be the same as Source ID#1 in data set 2. Now Source ID#1:1 may happen to be a letter dated 2/23/1956 to Mary Smith and Source ID#2:1 may also happen to be the same --- but they are not the same Source insofar as TMG is concerned. Further, Source ID# 2:3 cannot be used in a Source Citation for an Tag in data set 1. Think of a project as a file cabinet with each drawer being a data set. You can insert a Family Group Sheet (FGS) into drawer 1, but it can't be placed in drawer 2 at the same time. Of course, you can photocopy that FGS and place the copy into drawer 2, but they are separate pieces of paper. In the same was for TMG, the same data may be in two or more data sets, but all are different pieces of data even if they happen to read the same. The advantage of having multiple data sets is the convenience of viewing them together if desired and the ability to copy or move data from one data set to another. I will often keep client data sets with my main data sets for the convenience that affords. But, there are times when I will move the client data set to a separate project. This is usually in preparation for extensive work with that data set and maybe others, preparation for sharing with another researcher/the client, etc. In such cases, the original data set is deleted from the original project and will likely never be seen there again as this is one of the last operations with that client's data. 3. Thanks, Terry. That's what I needed to know. I'm pretty familiar with having multiple data sets in one project (data to clean before adding, etc) but have done little with separate projects. Any import into TMG must be into a new data set. That new data set could be in an existing project _or_ in a new project. Since a data sets in a project is completely separate from any other data set in that project, it really makes no difference (except person preference) as to which way an import is done. With an import into an existing project, a step would be saved of merging project _if_ that is anticipated. The Data Set Manager of a project allows a data set to be enabled or disabled. If a data set is disabled, all data (persons, sources, repositories, exhibits, etc.) in that data set are effectively hidden and cannot be seen or manipulated in any way until such time as that data set is enabled. With this in mind, if I were planning to import data into TMG with the aim of eventually merging that data into an existing data set, I would import into the project containing the proposed target data set. I could then enable/disable the data sets that are/are not of interest as I had need _or_ I could simply have them all enabled to see all the data. I do this often with client data sets in my main project because if is not unusual for me to have someone in my main data set that is also in the client data set. I can then easily copy from one data set to the other as I have need. (I can also _move_ person(s) from one data set to the other - but I _usually_ prefer copying as that is less hazardous to the original data set). TMG Help has good discussions of both copying & moving persons between data sets. Having said all this, it really comes down to personal preference. Importing into an existing project may save a few keystrokes (the later merging of projects) but that really is not that big a deal if one feels safer. Having multiple projects does mean that the data from one data set (in say project A) cannot be easily compared with data from a data set in project B. Of course, one can do this by having two instances of TMG open, so this isn;t really a big disadvantage either. So, really, flip a coin and tip it toward the way you feel more compfortable. Lee

I would be very grateful for any help anyone can give. Off-hand, the ownership and protections of your USER data files were changed in the Win10 upgrade. Reinstall/Repair only affects the executable program (which should have been in C:\program files (x86)\something ), not user data files. Out of curiousity -- do you actually log into that machine with a user name of "user"? That's what the file paths are claiming. If so, my suggestion would be to navigate to the c:\users\user directory, right click the "documents" icon (may display as "my documents"), select Properties. Step 1: click the [] Read-only box until it is not shaded or check-marked, then hit [Apply] and respond yes to all the following pop-ups. If TMG still gives the error, you may have to return to the properties page and pick the Security tab, pick your user account, and if you don't have all permissions, pick the [Edit] button... Select the user account (again), then [X] the boxes in the allow column (typically everything except the last "special" box need to be selected). Note: this step may need to be performed on each layer of files and directories. -- bieber.genealogy@earthlink.net Dennis Lee Bieber HTTP://home.earthlink.net/~bieber.genealogy/

Most devices (phones, tablets) are using some version of ARM based processor -- completely different instruction set. Yes, M$ may be bragging about being able to do development for phones, tablets, desktops using one Win10 API set... But that basically means the source code is common, but the executables are built based upon the target device (using a form of the .NET "managed environment" development tools -- Visual Studio Visual BASIC .NET, C#, maybe C++ in "managed" mode, not native. "managed" in this case being something like Java's system, where there is an underlying native specific runtime supporting one developer view). Heck, just read the current reviews of how disappointing the Win10 on Rasp-Pi turns out to be. http://www.theregister.co.uk/2015/05/21/first_look_windows_10_iot_core_on_raspberry_pi_2/ (does claim native Win32 apps can run, but I suspect very slowly). http://hackaday.com/2015/08/13/raspberry-pi-and-windows-10-iot-core-a-huge-letdown/ Running any database intensive application of a device based on Flash memory is going to be horrendously slow, as any edits will tend to require fetching a whole page of memory, updating the contents, ERASING the page in Flash, then re-flashing the page with the modified contents. Erasing flash forces all bits in the page to "1"; writing data to flash, OTOH, can only convert "1" bits to "0" bits. Since Flash has a limited number of erase/write cycles, you could rapidly wear out the flash -- and the entire device (unless it supports putting the user data on a removable card). -- bieber.genealogy@earthlink.net Dennis Lee Bieber HTTP://home.earthlink.net/~bieber.genealogy/

It also shut down Norton and turned off my wiFi. Don't know if they were all related, but spent a few hours yesterday with these problems. 3. The project vs dataset question reminds me of a question of my own. My main project (which has several data sets) has my own family. However, over the years I've also created a project for one of my friends and a project that contains many of my friends, with their birthdays and miscellaneous data. I've kept the friend projects separate because I've never intended to share them with family, whereas I occasionally do send my brother a backup file of the family project. Can I add the friend projects to my family project (simplifying sourcing) but keep them out of backups of the family dataset(s)? 3. I run a large one-name study which is currently predominately UK based. The odd entries in there for the USA are were someone has migrated in recent years. The current database contains in excess of 26,000 people I have been working separately on a new set of data in Family Historian, I find it much easier to add people quickly there as you can use drag and drop on a chart to add people. This file contains the over 2,500 people descended from the earliest Halstead that arrived in the US in the 1640's. I want to import this file ultimately into the main TMG database but thought that it would be easier to import it into a separate TMG project first. The problem then is how to compare the two to see where the duplicates might be. I then realised that I can add a separate dataset into the existing project and I am struggling to understand exactly how it works. Can someone give me some simple pointers. If I have it as a separate dataset in the existing project can I easily import it into the master dataset? Regards John Hanson Researcher, The Halsted Trust Website - www.halstedresearch.org.uk
