    3. Like Patt, I'm on about my third Canon Lide portable scanner in 20 or so years. Lightweight, inexpensive, easy to take to relatives' and libraries. I would recommend one of those (or something similar) rather than focusing on MFPs. (My brother has my previous one.) 3. Pam, I have two scanners. A little more info than what you want, but something to consider is what I have to say. An EPson DS-560 for the fast scanning of things that can go through a feed-through. That's a stand-alone scanner. Not cheap, but excellent quality, and scans double sided. (review: http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2473226,00.asp). The other is a MFP that I only use for the scanning of large items, and things too fragile for feed-through. http://www.officedepot.com/a/products/754435/HP-Officejet-7612-Wide-Format-Wireless is the one I got. The first scans I did with it are OriginalScan (left and right) here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/ga25c3cl57dkbkr/OriginalScanLeft.jpg?dl=0 https://www.dropbox.com/s/jkupoxi26ouzd4k/OriginalScanRight.jpg?dl=0 Then I stitched them together using Adobe Fireworks, to get: https://www.dropbox.com/s/7dar3f1qqff9e85/1958-04-27-ABC-SS-panorama.png?dl=0 Then I broke it up into 4 pieces to crop and put on numbers and I have a spreadsheet for the IDs. https://www.dropbox.com/s/hsxs28pnsxe7iuy/1958-04-27-ABC-SS-panorama-part2.png?dl=0 - number 31 is me, holding my newly acquired first Bible. An 11x17 is the largest you can get w/o spending many thousands of dollars. If you want "quick" but can't afford both the feed through and the wide format, I'd go for the wide format. Once set up a default folder for all the scans to go to (I have one called TempScans), then I just stand at the scanner and use the menu on the MFP. Scan, open lid, put down another item, touch scan on the menu, repeat. I had a series of about 3 dozen 11x17 pages that I needed to scan, and got them done in a short time. When done, I go back to computer, open folder, and rename from the default img2015-08-23_0001 (0002 etc) to whatever I want, and move them to wherever appropriate. BTW, you can set the default name to prefix the date with something other than img. For instance I did a series of maps and so did map2015-08-23_0001 (0002 etc). -- Kathryn Rhinehart Bassett (Pasadena CA) "Genealogy is my bag" "GH is my soap" kathryn@bassett.net http://bassett.net > -----Original Message----- > On Behalf Of Pam Wood Waugh via > Has anyone purchased a cheap MFP that scans old photos and docs pretty > well? 3. Pam, I recently bought a Canon MG6620, which is probably the newer model of the 6320 that another poster mentioned. It was only $60 or $75 on a promotion and I've seen that it is still being promoted. I've been scanning a lot of old pictures and it does a great job. I don't like the software, but I just go straight to the scanner without using their software and it works fine. I got mine at Office Depot or Staples. I also have a Lide 210 that someone else mentioned. It works great also. I sometimes travel with it as it doesn't need to be plugged in to a power outlet, is light weight and very portable. It gets power from my laptop via USB. It's good for car trips where you are visiting homes or libraries with your laptop but for airplane trips, it is probably a little big. Until I bought the MG6620, I used the Lide exclusively as my husband had confiscated my MFP to his office after his printed died. My favorite for traveling is the Flip Pal! It does not need a computer. It scans directly to a SD card and is only a little larger than a iPad mini. My favorite thing about it is that you can just flip it over and lay it on photos in an album, newspaper, etc without removing them from the album or frame or whatever. It has a small 'bed' but if you scan anything larger than 4 x 6, you just scan it in overlapping sections and then stitch them together at home. (it comes with software to do this, but I use photoshop instead) I've done great 16 x 20's this way. You can choose color or BW and choose 300 or 600 dpi. Yes, it has it's drawbacks, but for traveling without a computer, it is great. Also handy for sitting in front of the TV and scanning those 1000's of family snapshots. An add on, is a little plexiglass sheet that you can lay over the picture & write on with a grease pencil identifying the people in a group. Scan once with the overlay and then without. When you get home you know who the people are and any comments you made about the picture. Good luck Kaye On Sun, Aug 23, 2015 at 11:17 AM, Pam Wood Waugh via <tmg@rootsweb.com> wrote: > Has anyone purchased a cheap MFP that scans old photos and docs pretty > well? 3. I use a Canon Lide210 scanner. It is a portable model that I can travel with. It doesn't have an electric plug it get it power from the computer. I think it cost about $30 when I bought it a couple of years ago. I think this is about the 3rd Lide I've had over the years. I had to upgrade once because the old Lide wasn't compatible with a new version of windows. The next upgrade was because the one I have now was on sale and my husband wanted a scanner. He got the old one and I got the new one. <g> It's nice when visiting a relative to be able to scan photos they have. 3. Kay, not sure what you mean by "Principal and Witness turn up in my sheets instead of the Persons names" Can you expand on that a bit? I've done only a quick comparison of the Wholly Genes sample with current reports but as the sample was generated in 2003, I'd say it was definitely an earlier version. The one big change that I'm aware of (not sure which version, maybe 7 or 8) was the switch to using tables in ID reports. I use ID reports a lot and reformat them using a set of Word macros. That switch was a major headache for me because applying macros to the tables was much more difficult. The lines you refer to may be the borders of the table cells -- these can be easily suppressed when printing. Happy to help if you can give me a bit more information about what you are seeing and what you want. 3. Kay, if I'm reading your original message correctly, you're having the words, "Principal" and "Witness" appear in your IDRs, where you think names should appear. Can you be more specific about where those words are appearing, and what you're doing (what exact steps you're taking) to get to that point? I've created (in v9.05 on Win7) one IDR for a person who has only tags for birth, marriage, and 8 children; it's coming out as one would expect. (Screen Preview and Word document look the same.) Meanwhile, you might try resetting the report to the defaults. As Lindsay noted, the sample report on the Wholly Genes web site is likely from an earlier version. The defaults of the newer versions have changed since then in addition to how the report is generated. In the earlier version, the default was to have names of other Principals in bold font. You can still have that now by selecting the Bold font option in the Font tab of the Report Definition Screen [Options] window. for Surnames and Given Names. As for the lines, you can "turn then off" on the Miscellaneous tab pf the [Options] window by selecting zero (0) pixels for the Interior lines under the Graphics panel. Personally, I like a wider outside border and increase the Border lines to 3 pixels. I would urge you to "play" with the many options of the Report Definition Screen [Options] window.to see what all can be done. As you add/delete/change the settings, you will likely find some that you like which are not selected in the default setup. Lee

    3. Like Patt, I've found that VCF will only configure (and remember the configuration long enough to print) if I reset the default printer in Windows. I don't have a "roll printer", but have had to generate PDF files formatted for a plotter, and this process has worked for me. (I use CutePDF, which allows me to format pages to a maximum width [plotter length] of 200 inches, which the plotter can print continuously, and to a length that can be handled by the plotter's width.)
