Joan, the Data_paths.txt file is not needed if you use TMG's default file locations. For those of us who don't, it's a way of making the change. My cousin reports that when he clicks on the TMG9 desktop icon, TMG opens with the Select Backup dialog, and shows backups in the User>My Documents>The Master Genealogist v9>Backups path. He has set Preferences (in all possible places) to point to data in D:\TMG9. (He is NOT using a Data_Paths.txt file because we haven't been able to determine his correct paths for Shared Program Data Files or User Program Data Files, since the issue is complicated by his use of the Catalan version of Windows 7.) He'd like to at least get back to where TMG opens to the Welcome Window. Any ideas? Rick Van Dusen
This problem has appeared recently. I cannot find a permanent fix. Loading TMG, the Tag Box shows 'Filtered' in red. On examining File>Preferences>Tag Box 'Show non-primary events' is not ticked. I then tick 'Show n.p. events', Apply>OK, then for the session 'Filtered' is not evident. On shutting down, then reloading TMG, 'Filtered' re-appears, and I have to repeat the above sequence to clear the problem. I have been using TMG for years, and never experienced the problem before. Helpful suggestions will be greatly appreciated! Pat Dunbar

If you go to the Irfanview site http://www.irfanview.com/ and use the download link there it takes you to cnet.com and there is no problems with that site. Coming late to this, but I have copied relevant information as text and pasted it into the Supplemental tab of the Source. Then deleted the email. BTW, I used to use Eudora and loved it because I could edit the emails and Subject lines and save them as a thread. My current Thunderbird is a great program but I cannot edit anything in it, and I miss that capability. I do the research for a fairly large one-name study and realised a couple of years ago that having a source similar to the ones that you are talking of wasn't necessarily going to work as I was getting into detailed electronic conversations with people and I would end up with lots of "email from xxx dated yyyy" for the same person. That is when I came up with the solution I now use which is to copy every message both from and to the person into a single word document with the most recent at the top. These are then saved on the same external harddrive as all the rest of the research. Each is saved in a separate folder which is named after the person Smith-John. Within that folder there are other folder with copies of anything that I have sent them as well as ones with the data that they have sent me. Addition I also still save the email correspondence. One of the advantages of using the full version of MS Outlook, and one that many don't realise is there, is that you can save your messages into not only different folders but that you can have more than one PST file (that is the file extension used by Outlook to save all your messages. Again the messages are save by the name of the person. I come from the old school in computing of trying to save the trees. With over 3,000 certificates, many only in digital form and in total over 45 GB of data I hate to think of how many trees I would need. Besides using up MORE disk space? Unless you routinely use emails with embedded graphics, saving them as plain text should be the most efficient and portable format (you can cut&paste the text -- can't do that with a "screen grab" which is what JPEG would constitute). This message (prior to adding this and following paragraph, and stripping the rest of your comments) makes a 4kB TXT file, or a 4kB RTF file. Exporting the RTF from Word as a PDF generated a 53kB file. Granted M$ Word probably stuffs a lot of boilerplate (and maybe the font file too) in there, and then tries to compress the data. Pity I've never managed to get the Corel PDF Fusion program to work properly (all I manage to get working is the manipulation of PDF files to combine or split them -- no file converter seems to work, nor does the supposed PDF printer module). Loading the 2-page PDF into Photoshop (where it comes in at 300PPI print resolution) and saving as a quality 10 (out of 12) JPEG resulted in the FIRST PAGE ONLY consuming 722kB. -- bieber.genealogy@earthlink.net Dennis Lee Bieber HTTP://home.earthlink.net/~bieber.genealogy/

I am using the latest version of TMG. While I have used the program for a long time, it has been quite awhile since I tried to import any data. Recently, I tried to import a GEDCOM file but couldn't get past the first step. When I try to import into TMG the only file type choices that appear on the import menu are .tmg files and .sqz files. No other file types, including GEDCOM, are listed even though I know they are supposed to be. Does anyone have any idea why this might be happening? Thanks in advance! Steve Seiple

A pro for .PDF is that if you ever want to change back to an editable text document there are free (and also costly) software programs that can convert a .PDF but I don't know of any that can convert a .jpg to editable text. > What are the pros and cons to saving them (e-mails) as PDF's or downloading Irfanview and saving as JPG? I have not used Irfanview. Saving as a PDF (for example by printing to a PDF) means you are independent of the number of pages. I use it because it is straight forward when using the Microsoft Outlook mail client. My challenge is how to name it. I use "e-mail_date_author_title" - e.g. "e-mail_20150824T1856_Fred-Smith_re Grays of Wales" - the date/time being that given in the e-mail. This allows me to quickly find what I want. The only thing I need to look out for are characters in the title that cannot be used in file names. The reason I put "e-mail" at the front is to differentiate from other image types - e.g. "Probate", "Will", etc. Chris

Taryn, Any emails that contain text only should probably be saved as text. You can store the text in the Comments field of the associated TMG source (if any), or in standalone text files, or both. John
I agree about the value of sub-folder structures within the email client (although this won't work for Terry, I don't think, with AOL). This can be done, with multiple levels of sub-folders, in at least Outlook, Outlook Express (if anyone is still using it), and Thunderbird. Further, Outlook and Thunderbird can be archived (exported) into a variety of industry-standard or proprietary file formats. With Thunderbird, use of the add-on ImportExportTools provides a vast selection of alternatives. But this strays from Terry's problem (although I hope it'll help others). For Terry, I agree with John that for plain-text/text-only messages, capturing the text itself is what counts*. I realize it's a lot of work, but in the long run I think the copy-and-paste-to-text-file will be the most useful. Rick Van Dusen ---------------------------- * Note on source content: There are three kinds of sources I can think of: 1. Documents which have intrinsic value, such as awards, maybe birth or baptism certificates, certainly photos. One would wish to keep the original document if possible or an image of it. 2. Documents which contain factual content which is of intrinsic interest, where what is written, the way it's written, is important, such as 3g-grandmother's account of pioneer life, some newspaper articles, etc. One would wish to keep a copy of the text itself; an image adds nothing of value. 3. Documents which contain data of import/interest, such as Census records. One need only record the data itself; neither the full text nor the image adds value. (Of course, any of these requires a full citation.) On 8/25/2015 3:36 PM, John Hanson via wrote: : : : > Addition I also still save the email correspondence. Thanks, Lee. Good to know that's probably a false warning. Hhhhhmmm... I think PDF is starting to look like the way to go. I have never attached an exhibit to a source and I don't think it will matter to me when printing out charts. But, I wonder how that might show up in SS.
