That helps clarify the situation I'm trying to capture. I have an autosomal match with another tester, strong enough to pretty conclusively show that we have a common ancestor within "autosomal time frame". That is, we are surely cousins. Comparison of trees with this match strongly suggests who this ancestor is, someone a generation earlier than my earliest documented, well-proven ancestor, and two generations earlier than my tester's tree documents. It is someone who I have long identified as most likely parent of my earliest proven. I have other matches in this match area who are our cousins from the same family line as well and I am working through contacting them. Response rate in these cases can be low, so I may end up relying on this single match as far as the dna component of evidence. So I have a combination of standard genealogy research and now a supporting dna match that leads me to add this earlier generation to my line. In thinking about this now I can see that adding dna as a source could be taken as asserting the relationship "proven" when it's really one element of supporting evidence. I agree that remarks need to state how much I am really concluding. This general format can work for me. Since my example is autosomal and since I lump sources, I would move date and test id to citation detail, may add names of the people who match (just the two in my case), and would likely add the specific chromosome match points. Adding match names may be a problem since it could circumvent the privacy choices made by testers when they opt to share results and who to share with. Hi all, I need to enter dna tests (autosomal, Y) as sources and I'm looking for TMG source templates. I bought the Evidence Explained quick reference sheet "Citing Genetic Sources for History Research" so have a possible citation format but I'd also welcome hearing how others have done this. I usually lump sources and add specifics as citation detail. Without having done any entries yet I think dna as a source will be mainly for relationships. Thanks, Jerry Balkcom
Hello list, With the Details Person screen displayed, right-clicking on a Tag brings up a menu. When I select 'Filter for' the pop-up is displayed mostly off-screen to the left and is unreadable. I cannot find a way to drag the pop-up fully on-screen. My work-around is to reduce the size of the TMG display - fine for a temporary fix. Could someone please explain how I can re-position the pop-up? Pat Dunbar
Using TMG v9.05 with Windows 8.1 64-bit. All worked well until about a week ago when opening a tag (and many other dialog boxes) has suddenly slowed down -- painfully so, as each open now takes about 20 seconds. No recent changes that I can think of that might have caused this. I did have the Auto Relationship tag functioning, but turning that off has not helped. No accents, TMG opened and closed several times, Optimise/VFI performed several times -- all to no avail. Any ideas on possible causes? Lindsay Graham Canberra, Australia
Hello List, Many thanks for the response. The problem is solved. Terry Reigel wrote: > I suspect the filter has been saved as part of your Layout. > After fixing the filter, try saving your Layout. Thanks Terry, I tried thee or four times but it didn't work. My fault - I didn't know how to view filter status and thought that setting Preferences>Options>Tag Box>select Show Primary Events was all that was needed. Michael, thanks also to you. > find it easier to RIGHT click in the tag area and select the menu > choice of "Filter for ...". I had never before used this right-click menu. So I switched filters on and off a few times and checked each time for the red 'Filtered' label. This seems to have fixed the problem - thank you list members for your help. Loading TMG, the Tag Box shows 'Filtered' in red. On examining File>Preferences>Tag Box 'Show non-primary events' is not ticked. I then tick 'Show n.p. events', Apply>OK, then for the session 'Filtered' is not evident. On shutting down, then reloading TMG, 'Filtered' re-appears, and I have to repeat the above sequence to clear the problem.

Thanks, Michael. I copied your message to my cousin, for him to make those checks. Also, with your prompting, I looked at the app.ini file (by default, this is in C:\User\<username>\AppData\Roaming\The Master Genealogist v9--the default "User Program Data" folder). This was on my installation which works correctly, and I didn't immediately see where a problem might lie, except that logically I'd think it might be in the [Startup] section. Joan, if you'd like to contact me offlist and send me either a copy of your app.ini file or a copy of the [Startup], [Database], and [Advanced] sections, I can compare it to mine (working correctly) and see if I can see anything suspicious. (Remember, though, that I don't know what I'm doing, so any feedback I'll be able to give is only a clue, not an answer.) DO NOT MODIFY YOUR FILE. Rick Van Dusen On 8/27/2015 10:30 AM, Michael J. Rather, it provides links to half a dozen or more download sites, several of which have triggered warning when trying to download. I did finally download without a warning from the CNET site. I also have no real idea how/why this could be occuring, but the first thing I would check is: Preferences // Program Options // General // Default Project Path Is it set to where you expect? Next I would check the details of the desktop icon. RIGHT click on the icon and select properties. Where is the Target of the icon? Is it the folder name you expect? The default location for the program normally is an installation folder named "The Master Genealogist v9" under the default system folder for installing any programs. I believe that TMG then creates a folder with that identical installation folder name in the (normally hidden system) "Application Data" folder specific for this user. TMG will automatically look within that installation named folder within that user's system folder for a file called "app.ini" which is what TMG will use for initialization. Has that user's installation folder name in the (normally hidden system) "Application Data" folder for this user been altered or deleted in some way? By any chance was that folder renamed? [As an aside about opening HELP, in the folder where you installed the TMG program there should be a file "TMG.chm". Double-clicking on that file should open the TMG HELP without having to be in TMG.] Hopefully one of the users more knowledgable of TMG's internals will have an idea. Michael

Always be careful when downloading programs from sites other than the website of the creator. Others have given you irfanview's official site. You should download it from there. Irfanview has a plugin which allows you to create pdf files from jpgs too. And am sure you've heard this before, but never, ever ever do a 'standard' or quick installation after downloading a program. Always click on a custom download as that will let you know what other junk may be installed with the program you want. Sam On Tue, Aug 25, 2015 at 1:11 PM, Taryn L. Rick, thank you, but that's a bit of a Catch 22 for me because the problem prevents access to the help files. (That's why I would like to fix this.) This seems related to a problem I have posted about, but still haven't found an answer. I do have preferences set to show the Welcome screen. In my case, the Welcome screen has the option Open the Last Project grayed out, and I have to manually select My Project. I also am unable to access the help files. This began happening a few weeks ago after I uninstalled and reinstalled the latest TMG v9.04. All my path preferences are set to the correct default places, which worked fine before the uninstall. I'm not using a Data_Paths.txt file -- in fact I don't even know what that is. I really would appreciate any suggestions for fixing this. The lack of ability to access help files is especially a problem.
