Rick, Yes, you can use TMGU to replace two consecutive line breaks. I am busy today, and I don't have time to put together an example to make sure I give you exactly correct advice, but I will find some time tonight or maybe tomorrow morning. If you don't hear from me by tomorrow night, please remind me. John

No, names are inferred only from the Primary Name Tag, not from non-Primary ones. If you want those you need enter them explicitly. > Aside from sentences in reports "As of xx, she was also known as yy.", does > TMG make any use of the date entered for a Name-Var/Marr/Nick? If you want that name used in Event Tags after the Date you must specify it in each Tag. Terry Reigel
I am trying to figure out the easiest way to get TMG to generate name variations. I have a person with a primary name of Caroline Axel and I've entered the following: Name-Var : Lena (no surname) Name-Marr : Backes (no given name) Name-Var : Backus (no given name) Name-Var : Palckes (no given name) Name-Marr: Hepler (no given name - second marriage) TMG automatically generated variations that include either the primary given name or primary surname: Lena Axel Caroline Backes/Backus/Palckes/Hepler It didn't create combinations using Name-Var or Name-Marr for both the given and surname. I'd like those combinations on my picklist. Do I have to enter those combinations (i.e. Lena Backes/Backus/Palckes/Hepler) myself, or is there way to get TMG to generate them automatically? Aside from sentences in reports "As of xx, she was also known as yy.", does TMG make any use of the date entered for a Name-Var/Marr/Nick? Is there any other use for it? Thanks for your help, Brian
At 9/5/2015 15:42, you wrote: >What do the Place Labels and Name Labels do that are found under >Data Entry Mode Advanced if they are enabled? With Labels "Enabled",, you may choose the desired Standard or Custom Label. For example, for the City field, you could select the "City" or "Town" Label or any other Label that has been defined for use in a Place Style. The same would also apply to Name Labels for any Standard or Custom Labels defined for use in a Name Style. With Labels Enabled, the label field itself will be accessible by tabbing to it in the normal Tab order for the Tag. If Labels are Disabled, the Label fields are not included in the Tab order for a Tab. When Labels are "Accessible only with mouse", it is the same as Disabled" _except_ that you can click on the Label field and choose another Label for that field. I rarely wish to change Labels, but when I do, I don't want the hassle of having to switch to Enabled Labels and then switch back. So I usually just select the mouse option -- the best of both worlds. The reason some users prefer Disabled over the mouse option is that fast work often leads to inadvertent changes (which can done without the user being aware until later and Disabled prevents this). Note that changing a Label also will force a change to the Place or Name Style which you may or may not want. TMG will attempt to select the Style that closely matched the Labels that you select. If you select a Label that is in one Style and other Labels aren't in that Style, you may be presented with the possibility of creating a new Style which may or may not be what you want. The new Style will also likely have a rather unusual name -- the basic Label names in the Style. The nice thing about this is that TMG populates the new Style and you just need to arrange the placement of the Labels and the punctuation. You should also be aware that changing a Style for a previously used name or place will change the Style for that name or place wherever it is used. Lee
Michael, Thank you so much for your suggestions, which I'm checking out. Your aside about the TMG.chm help file solves my biggest remaining problem. I've now put a shortcut to it on the desktop, so I have easy access to it. With that, plus always selecting My_Project manually when I open TMG, I have workarounds that I can live with, even though my TMG is still not performing normally, for reasons I don't understand. I also have no real idea how/why this could be occuring, but the first thing I would check is: Preferences // Program Options // General // Default Project Path Is it set to where you expect? Next I would check the details of the desktop icon. RIGHT click on the icon and select properties. Where is the Target of the icon? Is it the folder name you expect? The default location for the program normally is an installation folder named "The Master Genealogist v9" under the default system folder for installing any programs. I believe that TMG then creates a folder with that identical installation folder name in the (normally hidden system) "Application Data" folder specific for this user. TMG will automatically look within that installation named folder within that user's system folder for a file called "app.ini" which is what TMG will use for initialization. Has that user's installation folder name in the (normally hidden system) "Application Data" folder for this user been altered or deleted in some way? By any chance was that folder renamed? [As an aside about opening HELP, in the folder where you installed the TMG program there should be a file "TMG.chm". Double-clicking on that file should open the TMG HELP without having to be in TMG.] Hopefully one of the users more knowledgable of TMG's internals will have an idea. Is there a way to find and replace two consecutive lines breaks? I would like to remove blank lines from citation details, replacing double line breaks with only one of them. Note that [:CR:] is not used in these fields. Rick
Thanks Mike, I ended up using a Word macro on the TMGU output. There were multiple embeds within a given memo, and the memos were quite large--the entire log file was over 100 pgs when I copied it to Word, and that was only 59 memos with embeds. Here's the macro if anyone has a use for it: Dim firstTerm As String Dim secondTerm As String Dim myRange As Range Dim documentText As String Dim startPos As Long 'Stores the starting position of firstTerm Dim stopPos As Long 'Stores the starting position of secondTerm based on first term's location Dim nextPosition As Long 'The next position to search for the firstTerm Dim ctr As Integer nextPosition = 1 'First and Second terms firstTerm = "[CIT:]" secondTerm = "[:CIT]" 'Get all the document text and store it in a variable. Set myRange = ActiveDocument.Range 'Maximum limit of a string is 2 billion characters. 'So, hopefully your document is not bigger than that. However, expect declining performance based on how big document is documentText = myRange.Text 'Loop documentText till you can't find any more matching "terms" Do Until nextPosition = 0 startPos = InStr(nextPosition, documentText, firstTerm, vbTextCompare) stopPos = InStr(startPos, documentText, secondTerm, vbTextCompare) 'Write the citations sequentially, starting with where ever you left the cursor Selection.InsertAfter Mid$(documentText, startPos + Len(firstTerm), stopPos - startPos - Len(secondTerm)) & vbCrLf nextPosition = InStr(stopPos, documentText, firstTerm, vbTextCompare) Loop MsgBox "I'm done" Next step is to Flag those sources so I don't inadvertently orphan some embedded citations Thanks Greg On Wed, Sep 2, 2015 at 12:20 PM, Michael J. Greg Cooke wondered: > Is there a way to create a list/report of embedded citations? Hi, Greg, You could use a TMG List of Events report to find these events and output such memos. I would use a filter of: Memo || Contains || CIT: || END I would probably have output columns of Prin1 ID, Tag Type Label, and Memo for that LOE report. It should be easy to identify the people with such memos from such a report. You could even use the Secondary Output to set a Flag to mark these people. While that report will output the "entire" memo, if the report went to a Comma Separated Value (CSV) file, you could manipulate the Memo field separately in a Spreadsheet to extract only what was inside the embedded citation brackets. For example, in Excel a combination of the SEARCH and MID text functions will do the extraction of the contents of the embedded citation. Assume column A has the Memo text, then an empty Column (e.g. D) would contain a text formula to do the extraction. For example, for D1 the formula would be: =MID(A1,(SEARCH("[CIT:]",A1)+6),(SEARCH("[:CIT]",A1)-SEARCH("[CIT:]",A1)-6)) Then copy that formula down the D column for all the rows where A has memo text. This D column would now contain only what is inside the embedded citation markers. Now you could sort on Column D to identify all the source numbers. Hope this gives you ideas, Michael
Greetings, Is there a way to create a list/report of embedded citations? Help for List of Citations specifically says embeds are not searched for that report. The closest I can get with TMGU is to Find [CIT:] in the memo field, but that gets me the entire memo. Although I only have 59 memos with embeds, it is still a very large file to work through to manually extract the data I want. What I'm really to get is a list of the sources associated with those embedded citations. Over the years, I've unwittingly created a number of duplicate sources and I'm trying to clean those up for Bibliography purposes. I find that when DELETING a source, the preference setting to prompt to search embedded citations works as advertised. When MERGING a source, I do not get that prompt. That's not thrilling, to say the least. Any solutions? If not, could we add this to the wishlist for TMGU? Thanks Greg

The processes of looking at Exhibits via Exhibits Log, finding a file to Add as an Exhibit, etc., all go to the correct folders/paths, and show the expected image files. (Seems this rules out any problem with paths.) 8. I've had him try: Reset to Defaults in the Report, Optimize>VFI>Optimize, and finally Reindex. None of these steps has made any difference. (Seems this rules out index problems, which might make a difference since the Backup/Restore process we use to transfer projects [via .sqz, data only, not Exhibits] abandons the indexes and rebuilds them, if I understand correctly.) 9. I'm pretty sure that what I want isn't possible but my motto is "if you don't ask, the answer is no; if you do ask, the answer MIGHT be yes". I have a lot of "children" who don't have birth tags. They end up like this: http://babcockancestry.com/storage/TMGissues/ChildrenSortDateQuestion.jpg Is there a way, either directly in TMG or using the Utility to do what I want to do?. I'd like a way to add birth tags with a sort date either the same or just after their parents' marriage. Doesn't have to be run on the entire database, but using this screen shot as an example, when I encounter someone like this, doing something. For instance here, for each of the children of ID 1464, without a birth tag, add a birth tag with a sort date of "after 21 Mar 1645" (or whatever date I need to choose). Working with Robin Lamacraft, I am managing the date, calendar, and related components in the History Research Environment (HRE) design.[1] We would be interested in hearing from TMG users about (1) what calendar(s) you use (e.g. Gregorian, Julian, ....) and for which time periods and geographical areas you use them; and (2) what special issues you have with dates or calendars. We have also looked in the list archives for conversations on these topics but would like to hear about the full range of needs. Thanks!
