So are you looking for an Excel table that has one row for each person in the database and 24 columns, with the persons' names in the first column and the values of the 23 flags for each person in the 23 columns to the right of his/her name? If so, you will need to assemble a composite table in Excel from three separate TMG List of People reports. The reason you need three TMG reports is because TMG's columnar reports can produce a maximum of 9 columns. So you would make one report with columns set to the principal's name and the first 8 flags, a second report with columns set to name and the second 8 flags, and a third report with columns set to name and the remaining 7 flags. If you wish you can save the three report configurations with different configuration names, so you will not need to recreate the output choices for later uses of the reports. The reason for including the name in the second and third reports is to verify that the rows match up with the correct persons in the first report, as they will if the same people and sort order are used in all three reports. Create the three TMG reports with three different file names using the Save To / File Type / Microsoft Excel choice. Open the first report in Excel. Open the second report in Excel, select the entire rectangle of cells containing data, and copy the cells as a group. Go to the first report and paste into the cell at the top row of data, one cell right of the data from the first report. Compare the names in the first report to those just pasted in from the second report; if they line up identically, delete the name column from the second report. Repeat this process to add the data from the third report into the Excel sheet containing data from the first and second reports. This should give you what you want if I am understanding your goal correctly. -----Original Message----- From: tmg-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:tmg-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Alice Eichholz via Sent: Tuesday, September 15, 2015 7:37 AM To: tmg@rootsweb.com Subject: [TMG] TMG tatistical Reports using Flags I can't figure out how to reference the previous question so have posted it and response below.Maybe it is a simple thing. We have 23 individually coded Flags for each person. For example, one Flag is for educational performance.(2) educperf = educational performance code for the highest completed educational level 1 Missing or insufficient data to code forthis flag 2 Eighth grade or less 3 Beyondeighth grade, but did not complete high school 4 Highschool graduate or GED 5 Vocational, trade, or business school completed 6 Completed two year college program ornormal school or more 7 Completed four or five year collegeprogram 8 Masters degree 9 Ph.D., M.D., J.D. or other doctoral degreeIn other words each person would be a row andtheir codes for each of the 23 variables would go under the appropriate columns to have multipleindividuals codes in a summative database.Does that give enough information for someone who can point us to how to set up such a report?? John, The next thing to check is the Place Style. You said you have File>preferences>options>current project>places>default country set to UK, but that doesn't tell me what place style is assigned to your places. When you edit the tag we've been discussing, you should see a [Place Style] button. To the right of that button, you'll see the name of the current Place Style. What is the name of the Place Style? John
Terry/John, Checked language selections as shown below:- TMG File>Language - English is selected, no other options available TMG Tag>Sentence structure - English is selected, no other options available SS4 Data>Language - English (US) selected for Site & Sentence Double comma still produced as in previous message. Thought to change to English2 in SS4 - but with same double comma. While that is considered; how can I reduce the number of site names which show up at the bottom of "File" in SS4? John, You can't control the contents of the "recently opened files" list in the File menu. Back to the original problem. Please answer both questions: 1 - What are the contents of the Memo field in the event? 2 - Are you using a custom Place Style? John
John, Thanks for your answer. I have copied the TMG structure and preview, I think I have understood your request. sentence structure : [PF] <|and [POF]> lived <[D]> <[L]> <[M]> sentence preview : Percy lived on 03 Apr 1881 in 41 East Street, Andover, Hampshire, with his parents and older brothers. This is the result after SS4, one web site : Percy lived on 3 April 1881 at 41 East Street, Andover, , with his parents and older brothers. The sentence structure obviously needs re-arranging; this is one of those upset in the computer problems earlier this year. Again thanks for your attention. John, Please reply with the exact contents of the memo field for the event you described. I suspect it starts with a comma. If it doesn't, then I agree with Terry: the sentence structure you provided didn't produce the double-comma output in SS, so there may be a language issue where SS is not using the sentence structure that you think it is using. John

John, I'm quite sure that Sentence did not produce that output in Second Site. I think the most likely issue is that Second Site is using a different Language than TMG. In TMG, open the Tag, then open the Sentence Structures screen. Look at the Language selected at the upper right corner of that screen. Then open Second Site and look at the Sentence Language selected in the Data > Language section. They should be the same. If they are not, change the setting in Second Site to match what is selected in TMG and see if that fixes the issue. Terry Reigel
Hi, Thought I would add my "two-penny" worth. I've had a similar problem with TMG7 and SS4, I have avoided mentioning before, assuming it was caused by using 'out-of-date' programmes. Examples of Tag Entry and Sentence Structure in TMG are as as follows :- [P] was born <[D]> <[L]> produced ".........born on 23 September 1933 at 52, Wickham Road, Brockley. " [PF] married [PO] <[PARO]> <[D]> <[L]> <[M]> produced ".....on 26 Dec 1905 in Elm Road Chapel, Beckenham, London, They were married by Percy's father......." In the Census for 1901 [PF] <was|and [POF] were> <[M]> <[L]> produced "......March 1901 at 4, Hainthorpe Road, West Norwood." I have not needed to use TMG reports, but after going through SS4, an extra comma has been added before the final full-stop or the final comma in each sentence. I am running Windows 7 Home Premium. Follow-up on this idea/tool: I have a lot of gleanings in text files, e.g. a list of articles found in a newspaper online archive which mention family members. What I really need to do is go through these and make a tag for each event reported, but.... So using Lee's info, I've created a new Tag Type (which I've called Tidbits) and merely inserted a double-exclusion before the Principal Sentence (and should do so for the Witness Sentence also). I've moved each text file to a new folder in my TMG data path (I've used TMG9\Tidbits, which puts it parallel to Projects, Backups, Exhibits, etc.), then created a new Tidbits tag under the most appropriate person, and created the Memo entry to cross-reference the file. Many of these files refer to multiple people. I haven't added Witnesses to these tags, but that might be a good idea also. Note that this probably gets me no closer to proper data entry<g>, but it does get these separate files all in one place, with a reference within TMG that such a file exists. Since it took me only about an hour to create the Tag Type and get it working and move/reference about a dozen files, it was much more likely to "happen any time soon" than making "the correct" tags. John, Please choose the simplest event and sentence where you see an unwanted comma and then describe that event and sentence for me. For the sentence, provide the complete TMG sentence structure. For the event, I need to know the number of principals and the contents of the date, place, and memo fields. If the place uses a non-standard Place Style, please include the Output template for your custom Place Style. Lastly, provide the full output of the TMG sentence structure as it appears in the output of SS. Describe only a single event. Providing more than one example will make it more difficult for us to communicate effectively. It's likely that solving the problem with one event will expose an issue that also explains why other events don't appear the way you expect. John
Greg, The sentence preview may not exactly match narrative reports, primarily because of report options. TMG explains that when you click the "(Why is it not correct?)" link on the Sentence structures window. Regarding the Individual Narrative, I think the issue is your Place Style Output template: <[Addressee], ><[Detail], ><[City], ><[County], ><[State]>< [Postal],><[Phone], > You don't have a comma after [State]. I forget all the details, but I think you can disable place styles in some TMG reports. If place styles are disabled, places will be subject to a default format where TMG concatenates place levels followed by commas. For a report with place styles enabled, your Place Style Output template will be used, and that omits the comma after state. There are a lot of moving parts here, and I am not sure I understand exactly how you've got things configured and how you've tested. In general, though, I think there are two key factors: the missing comma after [State] and whether or not a specific output (preview window or report) is using place styles or not. John
Greg, If the place has only one place level, for example, a state and nothing else, then there should be no comma. John
I get it that my short place has one level and no comma, and full place is multilevel, hence the comma, consistent with your explanation. What I don't get is the inconsistency in sentence preview & individual narrative (which show full places) and no comma after the state. Where is this documented? or is it an mystery of the universe-unexplained? Greg, Change your sentence: [:CR:][:CR:][P] left a will dated <at [L]> <, [D]><[M]> To [:CR:][:CR:][P] left a will dated <at [L]> <[D]><[M]> TMG's [L] variable will end with a comma if there is more than one place level in the given place, so you shouldn't have a comma preceding the date. I think SS removes doubled-commas after processing the sentence, and that's why the SS output didn't show the two commas even though the sentence you used would create them. John
Thanks, John. Is that "feature" documented anywhere? I can't find anything in help that describes it or any other punctuation that TMG supplies automatically. And, removing that comma preceding the date "breaks" in the sentence preview and the individual narrative in that the output shows no comma between the state and the date. In SS, when I set the option to use full places, output is OK; when I set it full then short, not so good as I have the short template set to city only. Greetings, Hopefully, there’s a good explanation for this. I’ve looked under every rock I can think of in TMG and not found a solution/answer. Various sentences produce a double comma after the state in a journal report that I’m creating in MS Word. If I do not have a location, I get the results I want (a single comma before the date). These locations are all styled after my own “My US Standard Places” style. The output is correct in SS, sentence preview, and individual narrative report which leads me to believe there’s a problem with the journal report. Here is a typical event sentence that is producing the double comma: [:CR:][:CR:][P] left a will dated <at [L]> <, [D]><[M]> Here is the output template for the place style: <[Addressee], ><[Detail], ><[City], ><[County], ><[State]>< [Postal], ><[Phone], > In all cases, there are no entries in any location fields after State. The Place option in the journal report is set to “use style.” The language is set to English (US)—the default. Any ideas? I can always remove the double commas with Find/Replace in Word, but I would prefer to have TMG produce correct output in the first place. Thanks Greg Cooke

Somewhere in the list or TMG forum archives there is a discussion of how to fix "the PDF printer is not installed" error that goes beyond establishing the device printer port as "NUL." I can't seem to locate that more extensive discussion, and if anyone can provide a link to it I'd be most grateful. IIRC, Jim Byram - as he so often did - did some of the heavy lifting. Good wishes to all. Robert

I'm a lifelong Baptist, and can trace my Baptist heritage back to the 1600s, so I'm well acquainted with the difference between infant baptism and believers' baptism. I think that might have been what so surprised me when I began finding an occasional adult listed in parish registers in the more remote parts of the American colonies. ....Betty On 9/9/2015 9:58 PM, Rick Van Dusen via wrote: > I've heard of such events, but haven't seen any in my line.
