Karen, You've received some help already. Where do you live? There may be a TMG group that is near you that might be able to help. First off, I do realize I'm late to the party and support for TMG has been discontinued. But I do need some help! I've been sent a Google drive with all of the genealogy files of a recently deceased genealogist ... Word files, image files, etc. Buried somewhere in this structure of folders and sub-folders MIGHT be her TMG database. The 1999 TMG manual says backups have the suffice .sqz, and I have found one such file. But 1999 was a long time ago. :-) If she were using a newer TMG, would .sqz still be the suffix? And what suffix(es) should I be looking for in order to find her most current (not backed up) database? Second ... assuming I find the files. Or the .sqz file is good stuff. I have a CD-ROM (hers) of TMG 6.x, and there is a long string written on it, presumably an access code. Is that all I need in order to install it? What version(s) of Windows would this work with? Or I've been told RootsMagic will import a TMG database ... the .sqz one? How much data is lost or does it do it all? Even if TMG is no longer supported, can I simply buy my own copy anyhow? Her daughter and I are trying to finish up a research project which was almost done, and while we have the written reports (the Word files), the sources are in her database (she was super careful about that), so we really need in. :-) Thanks for any help or advice! Karen
Lee, I interpreted Kathy's request differently. I thought she wanted a column per flag _field_, not per flag _value_. In Excel, one could split each flag field column, if desired, using a macro. I doubt that is what Kathy wants. Processing the values after each flag's values have been split into distinct columns would be tedious. Using Excel, or any database or analysis program, one can filter records by value so I don't see any advantage to splitting each flag field value into a distinct column. However, I am assuming that the set of values in each flag field are related to each other. If the values in any particular flag field are completely unrelated to each other ("Roses are red, violets are blue, I like ice cream, can you roller-skate?"), then Kathy should normalize the data. Keeping unrelated data in the same field is a recipe for confusion. John

John & Donald - Coming in late on this (just back from a cruise to Bermuda!!), and maybe I am misunderstanding Alice's request since she indicates she likes your replies -- But, I interpreted her explanation to mean that each person is listed in lines (column 1), and columns 2 through ? would be for each Flag setting. So Flag XYZ with settings of "A", "B", and "C" would result in a table similar to this: Name A B C John X Jane X Bill X Mary X Joe X The actual Flag value could be used instead of the "X". Again, maybe I am wrong, but this was my impression. In any case, if I am right, I have no solution to the question as I am no expert on spreadsheets. I can do most of what I want with them, but for the exotic, I have to get help. I can program this in any of a half-dozen computer languages from flat files or databases, but not in spreadsheets. Anyway, is there an uncomplicated way to do the above from TMG? Quick thoughts are that it would have to be through a word processor and use of macros to create the table, and then take the table to the spreadsheet. This might work for small tables, but might be more complex than necessary for large tables. Lee
I have a tag I use called IMG-Marriage to record the exhibit for the marriage tag. I keep my images separate from the tag that prints, but the IMG-tag is still a tag in the marriage group. I usually create the Marriage tag and then copy it and add the image and then change the tag to IMG-Marriage. Somehow for one of my ancestor's children, the Marriage tag got marked non-primary, but his IMG-Marriage tag was still primary, yet his marriage did not show up in the SIbling or child view. The IMG-Marriage tag is in the Marriage group, so it should have acted exactly as a Marriage tag would have. Does anyone know what I did that would cause this tag to not act as a marriage tag, because I do this a lot and I am sure he is not the only one without a primary Marriage tag, but a primary IMG-Marriage tag.
Teresa, Your description of the issue doesn't seem to match what I see in TMG 9. You say that "Somehow ... the Marriage tag got marked non-primary, but his IMG-Marriage tag was still primary." That is exactly what I see happening if I create the second marriage tag for a couple by making a copy of the first tag. This is because only one tag in the marriage group for a specific P1 and P2 can be primary. Clicking the Primary button (or the asterisk button, or the asterisk keyboard key) when the non-primary marriage tag is selected will make it primary and will simultaneously make the previously primary tag (if any) become non-primary. So I don't quite understand why your comment suggests that having one primary and the other non-primary is unusual. Re your question, sorry, I don't know of anything you could have done to cause a tag in the marriage group with two principals to not show up with both these principals showing in the children or siblings window when one of them is a child or sibling of the focus person. Unless you have a tag type with the label "Marriage" that is not in the marriage group. You could check this by opening the marriage tag that is failing to show up in the child or sibling window, clicking the "TAG Type" button, and verifying that the Tag Group that is listed is "Marriage." But I think you have already checked this. All marriages should show up in the child and sibling windows regardless of the primary or non-primary status of any of the marriage group tags for that couple. There is a setting in Preferences to "Show non-primary events" but it only affects the tag box; spouses show up in the child and sibling windows whether or not this option is selected. It sounds like your normal process would result in a primary Marriage tag and a non-primary IMG-Marriage tag. So any primary IMG-Marriage tags would be unusual and maybe there are not very many to check to see if there are additional cases which have problems such as the one you described. You can find all the primary IMG-Marriage tags with a List of People report with the filter: * IMG-Marriage # of Tags is greater than 0 You may be able to correct any problem tags by just toggling the primary status of one of the tags of the Marriage and IMG-Marriage pair for the couple. If that doesn't work and there are not many problem cases, deleting and reentering the marriage tag might do the trick. -----Original Message----- From: tmg-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:tmg-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Teresa Elliott via Sent: Thursday, September 17, 2015 2:07 PM To: tmg@rootsweb.com Subject: [TMG] Marriage tag primary no marriage in sibling child list I have a tag I use called IMG-Marriage to record the exhibit for the marriage tag. I had to move the ancestors up to the top of the list so it shows up after male and female. ugh.... Kay
I switched from using my main project to a secondary one and a pop up said something like - I dont have flags so the current accent scheme wont apply. Thought no, that is correct, did some work and closed project and reopened my main one again. My accents for ancestors have disappeared. I loaded my saved accent files applied/OK. They won't change. I must admit I played and could not get it to work, checked The Primer for TMG, yep I am doing everything right. No matter what I have done I cannot get the accents to change somehow the male and female colours are overiding my flagged ancestor colours. All my Tag accents are working, I can change the Male and Female colours and it applies. Obviously there is a conflict and I can't figure out where. Kay
The Houston Area TMG Users Group will meet Saturday, September 19th, at the Clayton Library at 10 am. We never know the assigned meeting room until we get there, so look or ask for us. The primary topic of discussion will be the construction of Tag sentences. However, we always cover other areas based on user questions/problems. The Clayton Library from Genealogical Research is located at 5300 Caroline St, Houston, TX 77004 in the museum district (directly across the street from the Holocaust Museum) with plenty of free parking. It is also located about 1.5 blocks from Metro's Red Line Museum stop. Come join us, Toby Turner
To the List - The Boston-area TMG user's group will meet in Burlington, at our usual location in the Patriot Energy Building on Commonwealth Executive Drive/Rounder Way this Saturday 19 Oct, from 1-4. Our talks have expanded to included TMG, transition topics, SS and the 'new SS'. Barbara Levergood will talk on dates. We also have members who are involved with HRE (History Research Environment) and will let us know (as much as they can) about the project Directions: Turn off 95/128 at exit 32B, Middlesex Tpke, heading towards Boston (away from the Burlington Mall). Immediate left onto Wheeler Road. Then first left (about 1/4 mile) onto Commonwealth Executive Drive. There is only one building, at the end of the road. Go in the front door, upstairs. The meeting will be on the right on the second floor. There is an elevator. If there are any last-minute questions my cell phone is 781-999-2451 Hope to see you - and remember, we have refreshments..... Linda Reinfeld
John, I finally get what you are asking for; Place Style is UK Standard Place. Hoping to spped things, I changed a few place styles to US Standard Place for one person only, then made the site again. If the <L> is at the end of the structure - no change. If the <L> is in the middle somewhere - no double comma BUT anything in 'STATE' is not printed. Perhaps moving entries to use only DETAIL - CITY - COUNTY - COUNTRY might solve that problem, if not the end position in the sentence. I'll await your next suggestion. Out of desperation - I did a control alt delete and shut the program down that way rather than just shutting down the computer. When it was down, I turned it on again and loaded tmg. It loaded just fine. Go figure. Banging my head on the wall again. :)
I had a problem earlier today with tmg - windows 8.1 not sure which version of tmg - definitely 9 something. I tried to load the program this morning and the titles across the top loaded but nothing else. And then I could not close it out. I finally shut down the computer. I have turned the computer on and off at least three times today - same thing. The program is there, but nothing loads. I can go into file and load other projects - but I cannot back anything up because the main page is there with nothing on it. I do get a message array dimensions are invalid. Anyone have any idea what I did wrong and how I correct this. It was working just fine earlier today. Help!
I had a similar situation this week. I opened TMG as I was hoping to print out ahnentafel reports that I could use with FTDNA. I ended up using the task manager as the computer hung up on me. I thought I would be able to do this easily, but I am not sure if the problem is within my computer setup or what. Perhaps I am asking for something impossible. The influx of new ways to do research is mindboggling. Fun, but, so much to learn. If someone can point me of a way to deal with this, I would appreciate it. Alice, The basic solution is to use the List of People (LoP) report. With that report, you can produce a list of people with a column for ID, name, birth and death (if wanted), and a column for each of the 23 flags. A single TMG LoP report is limited to 9 output columns, which is too few to include all the columns described above. However, you can use multiple reports, then combine the results in Excel based on ID. So, for example. Report 1: ID, Name, Birth, Death Report 2: ID, Flag1, Flag2, Flag3, Flag4, Flag5, Flag6, Flag7, Flag8 Report 3: ID, Flag9, Flag10, Flag11, Flag12, Flag13, Flag14, Flag 15, Flag16 Report 4: ID, Flag17, Flag18, Flag19, Flag20, Flag21, Flag22, Flag23 You can combine the TMG LoP reports in Excel so that you have a row per ID with 27 columns total. Use the ID column to make sure you combine the reports properly. John

I can't figure out how to reference the previous question so have posted it and response below.Maybe it is a simple thing. We have 23 individually coded Flags for each person. For example, one Flag is for educational performance.(2) educperf = educational performance – code for the highest completed educational level 1 Missing or insufficient data to code forthis flag 2 Eighth grade or less 3 Beyondeighth grade, but did not complete high school 4 Highschool graduate or GED 5 Vocational, trade, or business school completed 6 Completed two year college program ornormal school or more 7 Completed four or five year collegeprogram 8 Master’s degree 9 Ph.D., M.D., J.D. or other doctoral degreeIn other words each person would be a row andtheir codes for each of the 23 variables would go under the appropriate columns to have multipleindividual’s codes in a summative database.Does that give enough information for someone who can point us to how to set up such a report??
