    1. [TMG] Margins for journal reports
    2. Ann Carson via
    3. Hi all I have another question re journal reports please. I'd like to print draft reports with small margins. In Preferences for the particular journal set-up I'm using, paper size is A4 and I've set the margins to .5, top, bottom, left and right. However, the printed report has large margins - 1.5cm at top and 2.5 at bottom. Printer is set to use A4 paper. What am I missing? Thanks in advance Ann

Mark, What you are entering in the Memo are name Variables. Yes, you can enter them any place in the text of the memo that you like, just like you and enter any other Sentence Variable. I often include date and place variables in Memos. > In length, the memos usually extend say 5 or 6 pages in Word, sometimes > less, but sometimes significantly more, say 15 pages or more; and I have > other formatting coding in them, which I then expand with a Word macro. > Would I be able to put the role or witness coding at **any point** in the > text in the memo field, or would TMG automatically index the names to the > page where the memo begins in Word (I'd need to index names that occur > several pages later in that text)? I would expect, without testing, that the index code is generated by TMG at the point where the name appears. The index entry is then created from that code by Word, and would refer to the page where that code is located in the text. > Also, can role or witness coding be used without having it generate any > further text in the memo when it prints in Word—I'm only interested in > having it generate the indexing. To get an index entry from a Witness, you have to enter a name Variable. That variable will output the name of the person in the text, in the format specified by the variable. Terry Reigel

That's a good question, Sandy. Actually, you chances of getting large charts is pretty goo. It may take a little checking around, But, I expect most copy shops (KWIK-COPY, etc.) can produce the charts. You just need to ask them what format they need. You have sent the raw file (.VC2) before. The copy shops can't handle this. But you can do a File=>Export from Visual ChartForm to JPEG (JPG), Bitmap (BMP), or Enhance Meta Files (EMF) format. Most copy shops can handle JPG, but they may prefer something else. The only other point that I can think might interest you is that the copy shops tend to cost a good bit more. Good luck - Lee

    1. [TMG] Indexing Names in Memos
    2. Mark Norton via
    3. Thanks Terry, Lee & Michael, this sounds like it may be a workable option. I'm wondering however, would I be able to drop the witness or role coding **at any point** in the text I place in a memo? I normally only use the most common default tags, and then write a biographical sketch in a memo—the entire biographical material for the person in question is in the memo, for which I currently have no TMG-designated sentence structure ("[M]"). In length, the memos usually extend say 5 or 6 pages in Word, sometimes less, but sometimes significantly more, say 15 pages or more; and I have other formatting coding in them, which I then expand with a Word macro. Would I be able to put the role or witness coding at **any point** in the text in the memo field, or would TMG automatically index the names to the page where the memo begins in Word (I'd need to index names that occur several pages later in that text)? Also, can role or witness coding be used without having it generate any further text in the memo when it prints in Word—I'm only interested in having it generate the indexing. Thanks again for your help!

    1. [TMG] TMGU Citation Fix Issue
    2. Toby Turner via
    3. John, With my setup, I can't do as you request. I cannot copy any line from TMGU period. I can't copy from TMGU into Notepad/WordPerfect on my Windows desktop OR directly to TextEdit on my Mac. Please do not ask me why. It simply will not work. I don't seem to be able to copy ANYTHING out of TMGU at all. This is why I laboriously typed up what I'd done. So, unless you can answer my question without cut/paste, I'll have to manually repair all 51 citations. Regards, Toby

    3. I've done some work with printing to a .pdf file with the settings for a plotter. My cousin had one test print made. We haven't done enough work with this to get the bugs out, but we do know it can be made to work. You then take your .pdf file to a printing place with a plotter. I've been meaning to post this with some details; I'll try to do that within the next day or so. 3. Thanks Terry, and thank you Joan for your response I'll have a look at your website and also some of the discussion here about various macros. At the moment I'm focussing quite often on the elderly members of the family and most don't even have a computer so am using journal reports a lot. I don't find I am sending many Journals out lately, so haven't sent any that include a Fake Child. I added them to prepare text for a book I'm trying to get together, and for that I have lots of editing, so removing these manually is easy enough. But adding this to a macro shouldn't be hard to do. The hard part I think would be to figure out how to get the several lines removed at once. Terry

    1. [TMG] TMGU Citation Fix Issue
    2. Toby Turner via
    3. I discovered that out of 88 citations for a particular source, I inadvertently hit " instead of ' at the beginning of the citation detail for 51. I immediately thought of solving the problem using TMU, but can't seem to set the rules appropriately. Making sure I had Log Only set I did the following: Under Change Citation Parts\Set Rules I tried If Detail [and also: Any Detail Segment, Any Text Field, Detail 1] contains " Change Detail replace " with ' = no joy I tried typing in the full citation detail which includes the name of a specific chapter following the incorrect " which didn't help either. I tried If Detail [and also Any Detail Segment, Any Text Field, Detail1] starts with " Change Detail replace " with ' = no joy What is odd is that absolutely none of these rules turned up anything at all! I did manage to correct one citation where I needed to prepend the Chapter title to the specific area I was citing. But, so far, nothing else. Where am I going wrong? Toby
