Yes, the Windows path length limit is 256 characters - see my original message - (or technically 260 with driveletter:\ and a null character at the end). In Windows 7, my path is D:\Users\username\Documents\The Master Genealogist v9\Configuration_files\. I make that 75 before the filename, leaving plenty before hitting 260. Tony reported: > I've been struggling today with a new List of People report > that was failing to give the Screen Preview output... > I re-created the report but named it just "LoP test" > and found that it worked... > Is this a known bug or a new one? It is a new one, Tony. Thanks for reporting it. I have tested this and confirmed the bug, but it appears to be limited to having the Report Destination as Screen Preview. Report configuration names up to and including 59 characters work. I found that report configuration names of length 60 or more work when the Report Destination was to a File type such as Word or RTF. But, as you reported, these longer names fail to produce output if the Report Destination is Screen Preview. The workaround, as you discovered, is shorter names; or don't use Screen Preview for long-named configurations. I have added this behaviour to my Outstanding Bugs list. See: http://www.mjh-nm.net/BUGS.HTML#B93 Michael
Yes, I agree that's the default. However, you can expand the window horizontally and enlarge it as much as your display allows. Heh, I wish it had been that easy. If you have report output suppressed, you see a warning in the Report Destination part of the definition screen. Tony On 30/09/2015 14:05, Terry Reigel via wrote: > That's because the "Suppress Output to screen, File, or Printer" box is > checked on the Secondary Output tab of Report Options.
I've been struggling today with a new List of People report that was failing to give the Screen Preview output before setting a flag. I tried restarting TMG, rebooting the PC, and resetting the report definition - none of which helped. It was then a surprise when I re-created the report but named it just "LoP test" and found that it worked. I then added a new report based on the working one but with a configuration name closer to my previous (long) name and found it failed again. A comparison of the contents of the report definition file showed that they were identical. So I thought I'd play with the length of the configuration name (which is all alphabetic) and found that a character length up to and including 55 worked, but 56 upwards failed. At 80 characters, there were catastrophic error messages as well, so I didn't go there again. I shall just have to be less verbose in my report naming system! I realise the failing number of characters may be different depending on other factors I haven't fully investigated, e.g. the path length of the Configuration_files folder, although mine is the TMG9 default, albeit on my D: drive, and my username is only 8 characters long; my configuration name limit of 55 added to that folder path length gets me to around 128, which may be significant, even though the Windows 7 maximum path length including filename is 256. I'm running TMG v9.05 on Windows 7 64-bit. Is this a known bug or a new one? -- Tony
There's also, I believe, a Windows limit on the overall path length. With a path such as the default C:\Documents and Settings\username\My Documents\The Master Genealogist v9 leave relatively little room for a filename. To my knowledge, you are the first to try such a long entry. But, it really is not a bug (although I am surprised at the results as much as you). It is more of a design issue. The Report Definition Configuration Name was never planned to be long. Note that the field in which the Configuration Name is displayed on the Report Definition Screen is only about 58-60 characters long (anything longer would not be seen). Since it is only for the user, it was deemed to be long enough. In fact, earlier versions (v4 and before) only allowed about 40 characters. Insofar as the effect of having a "too long" Configuration Name, I am surprised and would have thought that anything more than design length would have been ignored, truncated to the display field length, displayed an error message, or bother the last two. My guess is that it was never expected that something that long would be exceeded. And I doubt that any beta tester tried a long Configuration Name. Lee

Gayle Keaney wondered about dates on files: > when I overwrite a gedcom the "date modified' on > the gedcom does not change to the date of the latest version. You do not indicate, Gayle, but I am "assuming" that this "date modified" is what is shown by Windows for that gedcom file? That date would be when the export was run to create that file and would have little to do with a "version" of either the project or the program. First, have you refreshed your Windows file list following overwriting the file? Second, double check that the folder listed on Step 2 of the TMG Export Wizard is pointing to the same Windows folder where you are checking the date. It may be that you are storing your new gedcom in a different folder than where you think. > Also while the date on the 'Report Ouput' folder changes to the > current date, the date on the Word file does not change... and the > dates of the gedcom file & the word file are not the same. Again, it is not clear what dates you are looking at. Also it is unclear what relationship a Word file has to a gedcom file. The first is created by running a report and the second by doing an export. They would each show the dates of those actions, which may have no relationship to each other. Similar to the gedcom export, double check that the output folder for the report to a Word document in the Report Definition Screen when you run the report is the one where you are checking the date. Hope this gives you ideas, Michael
Dennis, The EMF output in VCF is broken. Save a file and nothing seems to be able to display it correctly. The BMP output is based on 96dpi images there is a tendency for characters to have staircases. JPG is alright for small charts, but again looses definition on straight edges. Using a PDF pseudo printer (e.g. PDF995, etc) is the only effective method of external printing for charts up to 200" * 200". VCF files used in machine can plot to plotter with VCF installed are limited by the plotter driver. Hello.... I am wondering.... ?when I overwrite a gedcom the "date modified' on ?the gedcom does not change to the date of the latest version. Also while the date on the 'Report Ouput' folder changes to the current date, the date on the Word file does not change... and the dates of the gedcom file & the word file are not the same. thanks Gayle Keaney

I make great looking box pedigree charts with VCF by just setting up the chart and exporting to a jpg. Put it on a flash drive and take to your local Office Depot or Staples. They print beautifully. You may have to experiment with who has the best or most versatile large format printers in your area, but the sizes are set in the program. The printers can print up to 24 or 36 inches wide (depending on printer) and as long as necessary. And it's not expensive. This won't help if you want colored paper, but it works for me.
