    3. I upgraded last week through TMG's "Help" "check for updates" - an automatic download and installation. Today at: http://www.whollygenes.com/upgrades.htm#tmggold I downloaded V9 gold and ran the repair file successfully. Thank you for taking your time to help. Katherine, I assume you downloaded the v9.05 installer to do the upgrade. Don't use the CD for V9.04. You need to find that v9.05 installer file on your disk and run it. That should then allow you to run Repair. 3. Good morning. Scotlands People are allowing free access to the indexes of the 1855 Valuation Rolls for a limited time, so I played there then spent a few credits for two records confirming plus more than I knew. Has anyone created special tags for these rolls or do they have a generic one for rates? I am off to figure out a tag called VR Roll. I would be interested in knowing how others have done this. Hope others have some success in this new resource. Kay

    3. For Occupier-Tenant, I created a role in Residence. I'm at a different computer right now, but 1855 was in the year. For Owner, I already had a tag for owning property, so I used that and have not added a new role. However, I haven't yet bought any credits to unlock further exciting details, so my investigation and tags could be considered preliminary. 1. Re: [TMG] GEDCOM question
    2. Michael J. Hannah via
    3. As the self-appointed resident GEDCOM guru <grin> I thought I would "chime in" with some comments and explanations. Tami Dola originally asked: > It appears in a GEDCOM that a person can have 2 family records FAMS > or FAMC. Can that family # ever change or will it always be the same? FAMS and FAMC are entries which point to a FAM record by use of the FAM record number. FAMS and FAMC are entries within an individual's record. FAMS is the "spouse record to family record" pointer, and FAMC the "child record to family record" pointer. There is no requirement in the standard for a program exporting a GEDCOM file to use the same FAM number for a given family each time it creates such a file. I have found that seldom occurs. Usually programs simply number the FAM records in the file from 1 to N. So if a file now contains different or more families, a given FAM number is likely to be used for a different family than had it in a different file. Next Martin Barker wondered: > the GEDCOM 5.5 standard ...seems to indicate that there can be > zero to multiple FAMC records... Wouldn't this allow for > the recording of birth and adopted families? A constraint of GEDCOM in this area is that a FAM record may only have one HUSB pointer and one WIFE pointer but may have multiple CHIL pointers. The HUSB and WIFE entries must point to individuals with matching FAMS pointers back to this FAM. Also HUSB and WIFE are assumed to be male and female respectively. Every individual who has a FAMC pointer to this FAM record is expected to have a CHIL pointer within the FAM record pointing back to that individual. The program creating a GEDCOM file is expected to enforce these constraints and syncronization. Yes, Martin, GEDCOM does define the capability for multiple FAMC records for an individual. This was designed specifically to record natural, adopted, fostered, or sealed (LDS) children of that family. GEDCOM also allows a FAMC entry to be subordinate to the adoption etc. event to indicate the family the individual belonged to at the time of that event. The FAMC entry provides an *optional* sub-entry of PEDI which has only four defined values: adopted, birth, foster, and sealing. Only the FAMC entry has the option to specify the linkage type, the matching CHIL entry does not. A FAMC without the optional sub-entry is always to be assumed to be of type birth. Thus GEDCOM does have a way to express four different "child to family" types of linkages if an exporting program chooses to use that mechanism. It is important to note that a FAMC links only to the FAM record, so that the type of FAMC linkage (e.g. birth) will automatically apply to both the HUSB and the WIFE of that family. I know of nothing in the standard which would prevent an individual having multiple FAMC records, even all type birth, pointing to different FAM records. But most exporting programs would likely impose constraints in this area, such as TMG's restriction of only creating FAMC records for the Primary parents. As I describe in my on-line document "TMG™ GEDCOM Export, Guide to Limitations and Issues", TMG does not use the PEDI sub-entry in its GEDCOM export. TMG also does not have a mechanism to indicate the family associated with a given event which would produce a FAMC entry subordinate to that event. While some other programs may use the PEDI sub-entry and may allow FAMC entries subordinate to events, I have not personally encountered any programs which do either. For TMG limitations in this area see the "Relationship Tags" section in my on-line document: http://www.mjh-nm.net/GED-EXPT.HTML#GedcomERelate Hope this helps explain things, Michael

    3. Martin Barker wrote: > Wouldn't this allow for the recording of birth and > adopted families? Martin, Not by itself. You'd need a way to indicate the type of relationship. The easiest way to determine if TMG exports multiple FAMC records for a person is to do a test. I don't have time for that right now, but I'll do it over the next few days unless someone beats me to it. John

John, The copy of the GEDCOM 5.5 standard available at http://homepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~pmcbride/gedcom/55gcch2.htm#INDIVIDU AL_RECORD seems to indicate that there can be zero to multiple FAMC records +1 <<CHILD_TO_FAMILY_LINK>> {0:M} Wouldn't this allow for the recording of birth and adopted families? 2. John Cardinal via
    3. Tami, FAMS and FAMC denote membership in a family. FAMS is used for husbands and wives (I believe the "S" is for "spouse"). FAMC is for children. If I recall correctly, TMG does not guarantee that the family number assigned to a family will be the same number on successive exports to a GEDCOM file. In a TMG GEDCOM file, a person may be a spouse in multiple families. I don't think they can be a child in multiple families, i.e., there will only be oneFAMC record for an individual. John

The Configuration folder is used to hold the Report Definitions and other files used to configure TMG output. If a report is saved (i.e., output to a file) it is placed in the Report_Output folder. Since it isn't saved, it goes in the Temp folder along with many other temporary files that TMG creates -- and, after closing the preview, is auto-deleted from the Temp folder. This is MicroSoft's plan for the Tmp folder, and if any files are left in the folder past a Windows session, it is know that they can be deleted without causing problems. Lee Lee

However, my testing did observe that the long-named temporary backup of the configuration file in that folder is successfully used when the Report Destination is to a file. > Your observation of problems at 60+ is already different > from my tests giving problems at 56+. Good point. That does imply the full pathname is likely an issue, not just the configuration name itself. I will update the Bug comment later after I get a chance to do some more testing. What is curious is that the output for Print Preview creates an RTF file in the user's Temp folder, not a file in the configuration folder. And that file is created with a random 8-digit file name, not the name of the configuration, so its pathname would be unaffected by the length of the configuration name. So why only Print Preview has problems is a mystery. Strange, but definately a bug. Michael

    3. Mary Jo Gatti first asked: > In data entry, I’m trying to decide how to add “Dr.” to > a person’s name... Is there a way to add the title only > after he receives his doctorate but not before? Lee Hoffman and Rob Geldart responded with suggestions to add Name-Var tags. Mary Jo then replied: > Thanks Lee and Bob for your suggestions. > It’s doable but sounds a bit complicated... If you try a few, Mary Jo, I think you will find it is not complicated. And changing things once in TMG means not having to edit the report every time you produce a new version. But I would also suggest first deciding for that person which name (with or without the title) you wish to assign to the majority of event tags. Choosing which Name-Var to be Primary, and thereby used by default, will mean you minimize the number of event tags you need to edit to set to a different non-Primary name as described below. The steps to use Name-Var tags are as Lee mentioned: - Add a new Name-Var tag type which includes the title. This is in addition to the existing Name-Var tag which does not have the title. - Make this new Name-Var tag with title Primary *if* most of the event tags and output are to use the title. - One by one edit the event tags which should use a non-Primary name. You don't need to edit any event tags which should use the Primary name as they will use that by default. - Find where the person is linked to this tag. This will either be on the Tag Entry screen if they are a Principal, or on the the Edit witness screen if they are a Witness. Notice the field at the top to the far right of the person's name. By default it will indicate the tag will use the name currently assigned to this person as their "Primary name". Click on that field and it will drop down a list of all the name variations defined for this person. Just click on the desired non-Primary name in the list to select it to be used for this event tag. That is all there is to it. Do this once and the tags will use the desired name for all reports without need for post editing. (Of course whether the full name, or a part of the name, or a pronoun is used will depend on the variable for that subject in the sentence.) Hope this gives you ideas, Michael

Yes, I'm aware of MAX_PATH=260 (I checked the exact figure before my original post). My Windows 7 folder path for the configuration files is "D:\Users\username\Documents\The Master Genealogist v9\Configuration_files\", which is the TMG default except for changing to the D: drive. That's only 75 characters; adding the problem file length of 56 upwards, plus one for the nul character at the end of every path (as per your reference), still gives only 132. Hence, I don't think that's the cause of the problem. -- Tony
