Did you go to Terry's site to look for directions, or follow Virginia's advice to read and understand TMG Help's sections of the Data File Storage? I haven't checked Terry's instructions (even to verify he *has* such instructions) nor have I done this task, so I'm not going tell you how I think it's probably best done, but I'm pretty sure the backup/restore method is not the best. Kay - Rick is correct. If your projects are in separate folders, the accents and filters in a project will be unique to that project. If all the projects (note there are over 100 files in a single project) are kept in a single folder, the accents and filters can be shared by (and listed in) all those projects - and some folks do prefer that option, particularly if the accents and filters apply to all the people. I have always kept my projects in separate folders, with their own accents, flags, and filters. There are instructions in Help for keeping projects in separate folders. The TMG Data File Storage (DFS) system is explained in Help under Data File Storage. You can also download the article I wrote when the folder system first came out. The folder names in that article have changed a bit over the years, but the principle of the three TMG folders (mine/ours/theirs) is the same. I think it is an elegant design - fitting specific TMG files into the MS Windows files-access rules. Wherever you keep your projects, you will find life with TMG more simple and less error prone if you understand the DFS system. DFS article for download: https://www.dropbox.com/s/txd6404mcwvmhip/tmg7dfs.doc?dl=0 The article also has a list of the filters (at that time) and their file extensions (to identify them). You may be surprised at just how many really neat filters there are - and where to find them. Virginia

Hi Jerry, TMG_L is a RootsWeb list devoted to TMG users. HRE content would likely usurp the list for TMG users. It would be be seen as OFF-TOPIC by the List Administrator. Occasional topics seeking opinion about features in TMG, I would expect would be tolerated, but not a solid stream of HRE related discussion. If you (or anyone else) are specifically interested in the provision of features within HRE, please communicate with me or John Lucas and we can pass that item to the specific team. If you (or anyone else) have specific IT skills which could be valuable to the project and have the time to contribute, then please again communicate with me or John Lucas. As we get closer to having something to demonstrate, it is likely that we will announce a public website about the project. I'm going to attempt to answer this from memory; sorry, I don't have time to test and verify. But this will be close to exact, anyway: Accents interact with flags, and one or the other (here's the part I'm not remembering for sure) of these is kept in a file that's shared by all projects in the same folder. This means that if a user has multiple projects in the same folder (say the TMG default of The Master Genealogist v9\projects), the flags and/or the accents must be manually synchronized in all projects (even if the flags/accents are not used in all projects). (There's some sort of indexing which makes the order of the flags and/or accents critical as well. In other words, the third (say) flag and third accent will relate to each other, even if they're not the correct pair. With multiple projects in the same folder, the user will have to not only have all the same flags and accents across all the projects, but must have them in the same order.) The other solution to this is to set up a separate folder for each project (e.g. The Master Genealogist v9\projects\project1, The Master Genealogist v9\projects\project2, The Master Genealogist v9\projects\project3). With this setup, the shared files are not shared, but are duplicated, one per project. Flags/accents (and any other files which are normally shared) can then be set independently in each project. Without verifying this, I'll presume that Terry has a page which tells how to separate projects into different folders. Fastest way is much easier than focus groups. Print a journal report and set the number of generations to something larger than was actual (I always use 20 generations). The initial ancestor is number 1 and all further descendants are sequentially numbered up from there. Simply subtract the highest number from the end of each generation from the highest number at the end of the next generation and the difference is the number of descendants in that generation (start person is #1, then children, then grandchildren, then great-grandchildren, etc.). Related question: is there an easy way to get a count of how many people there are in each relative category (1st cousins, 5th once removed, that kind of thing)? I know I can run a report that puts out the names in groups, but then I have to manually count how many people I know of in the various categories, which is tedious. Robin, One way is to add the person to an empty focus group. Then set the Add Others box to add Descendants for one generation. Click the Add button and note how many are added. Click "Select All" and then Add again and again note how many are added. Repeat until you run out of descendants. There may be an easier way, but it doesn't come to mind. Terry Reigel

However, you can still get them there. What you have to do is Merge the two Projects. This results in two separate Data Sets within the merged Project. Then you Merge the two Data Sets. This results in all the people from one of the Data Sets being added to the other, but the first one still remains. So then you have to delete that Data Set. You have to do all this carefully to avoid getting all the new people assigned the low ID#'s and all the the people in your working Project renumbered after them, assuming you care about that. See details in my article on Merging at http://tmg.reigelridge.com/merging.htm Be sure to make Backups first because it's entirely possible to mess up. Terry Reigel
In printing a list of people - is a descendant of - I don't see an option to not include spouses. When the report goes to the screen it shows how many people then it adds the spouses and shows the total. When the report prints or shows on the screen, the spouses are listed twice. The purpose of this report is to get an alphabetical list of one ancestor. I want the spouses names also, but not listed twice. Name: last, first ID number Birth Year Death Year Father's Name: last, first Mother's Name: last, first What am I missing? Nancy
I created a separate project to test a possible ancestry for one personin my main project. Now I want to copy those people and all their sources, tag types, etc. back to my main project. I've tried creating a focus group from my test project but it won't appear in my main project. Is there any way I can copy my people from the test project to the main project? Right now I'm stymied as to how to do it. Thanks for any help. John Wood
What’s the fastest way to count how many grandchildren and great-grandchildren (and beyond) a person has? (I guess I’m looking for the number of descendants in each generation from the focus person) I don’t need a list of names, just a headcount. Thanks Robin
1) Open the Focus Group window (if it's not already open) and click Remove All to make it empty. 2) Click Add Individual and choose the name or number of the person whose descendants you want to count. 3) Select that person in the focus group. 4) Check the Descendants box and set the number of generations to a large number. 5) Click Add Others. The count shows at the top right of the box, and it includes the starting person and all his/her descendants. -----Original Message----- From: tmg-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:tmg-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Robin Kaspar via Sent: Monday, October 12, 2015 12:41 PM To: tmg@rootsweb.com Subject: [TMG] Number of descendants What's the fastest way to count how many grandchildren and great-grandchildren (and beyond) a person has?
