    3. I've just tried that, too, Virginia. Didn't work. I tried several different columns, a single column, etc. It still reverts back to it's old arrangement. Do you remember what you searched on in the archives? I'll go look some more. 3. Bobbie - Go to the last column on the right side of the Details window. Click on the left vertical line at the top of that column and drag the column to the left a little and make sure there is a vertical line on the right side of that column with some space between the right vertical column line and the side of the Details window. 3. I have been able to run UFT directly off a USB drive on Windows XP. I don't have to copy any files to the hard drive. I can even run Roots4 (the DOS version of UFT, and several earlier Windows versions of the database program) in a DOS box on Windows XP. In fact, Roots4 and UFT work off the same database files, that is, I can update my database in UFT and see the changes in Roots4. The only time that was really useful was when I wanted to access my database on an old portable computer I had that was too slow to use Windows programs effectively. The main point is that Windows programs written for older versions of Windows (pre-XP) did not know about the Registry and often kept control of the program in their own files. Later programs stuffed some data into the Registry during the install process and if you didn't run the install process on a specific machine, they would not run on that machine. 3. I've got TMG 9.05 running on (recently installed) Windows 10. I am trying to save a custom layout, but it doesn't seem to want to keep some of the changes I've made. I re-arrange the various windows within the layout - those stay saved. But the changes I make to column widths won't save. I make the changes, then click the save icon on my layout toolbar and use the 'modify an existing layout' section, and select 'overwrite'. The next time I either open TMG or switch from one layout to another, and my column width changes have reverted. What do I do? Or is this a known issue? Many thanks!! Bobbie

    3. I have not found this documented anywhere but in XP and earlier OS if you will go to Windows Explorer and search for "compatibility" you will find a "compatibility wizard". Then when you want to load legacy software. This wizard is supposed to give better results than the fix offered when right clicking the icon produced when loading such a program w/o using the wizard. I always do this even if others have been successful using a "normal" load approach. If not, then RIGHT-click on the Visual Roots program file and select the Properties menu item. In the pop-up Properties window select the Tab "Compatibility". 2. Kay & John Sturgeon OAM via (Bill)
    3. Rick & Virginia, I read them, the grey cells went into panic, and most of it went over my head. Now some time later, tried again and found this under the help as suggested by Virginia, did not find it the first time round. I have employed this method, BUT what I did different to before was closing the main project before restoring the new one. I have checked that everything is correct, The only hiccup was when my main project was opened one of my accents whilst showing at the top of my list had turned itself from A to ?, thus only showing the female colour not the ancestor colour. Now fixed. _So now I __presume I should do the same for my main project??_ BUT would it hurt to live like that seeing that the SAMPLE has done so from day dot under project, but there is no folder under configerations and exhibits. The exhibit has the sample pictures as separate .jpgs. I created a folder in the File/Preferences/advanced/exhibits/sample, closed it down and then manually moved the .jpgs. Reopened sample and the pictures showed up. No hiccups so far. Kay, on a learning curve today. Hope my explanations makes sense. How to get your data into each custom User Data File folder 1. Create a new project in a custom User Data File folder; or, 2. Import a database to a custom User Data File folder; or, 3. Restore a v5/6 or a v9 project into a custom User Data File folder. If you use the Restore Wizard (the third suggestion above), you can transfer project files, accents, filters, external exhibits, configuration files, and timelines. Here are a couple of ideas to get you started. Restoring a TMG v5/6 project to a new custom User Data File folder 1. In TMG v9, start the Restore Wizard (File / Restore...) to restore your TMG v5/6 backup to the new custom User Data File folder. 2. Edit the project path to point to the new custom User Data File Projects folder (or to a subfolder in that folder). 3. Edit the exhibits path to point to the new custom User Data File Exhibits folder or to an existing exhibits folder (if the path is valid). 4. Edit the configuration files path to point to the new custom User Data File Configuration_files folder. 5. Edit the timelines path to point to the new custom User Data File Timelines folder. 6. Complete the restore of your project and (optionally) your external exhibits, configuration files and timelines. 7. After the Restore Wizard completes, open the Advanced tab (Preferences / Current Project Options) and change any paths pointing to the Program Default Paths to your new custom User Data File paths. 8. Once your data is located in the new custom User Data File folders and you have edited the Preferences paths, make a new TMG v9 backup. You only need to go through this procedure once per project. 9. When you restore this backup, the paths in the PJC file in the backup will be respected and your data will be restored to the current locations

    3. Rick and Virginia, First of all I thought, too hard, then decided to give it a go. I backed up my prime project - paranoid set in. I deleted each of the other two projects and restored them changing the folders to read \Projects\Selwyn and Projects\Sturgeon Others. I noticed something not right in my layout, corrected it and resaved it. TMG hung after turning grey. I had to close down without saving and restart. Not sure I did it right as every restore wizard window that came up I created a new sub-folder, should I have done that? I could see these subfolders along with Sample under Projects, which I am sure is correct. Being paranoid (the hanging thing) I have deleted those projects again. Then manually deleted the folders as even though I deleted the project there were files remaining under the folders I created. Perhaps some also lurking elsewhere on my computer. I am now left with my main project called National Park and back up .sqz files of my two other projects. I did a little tweak with the layout and saved it, no hanging. Obiously I did not get it right in the restore wizard - should I only made a sub-folder under the projects??
