    3. Michael, Let me add my thanks for providing the filter on List of Events which generates a list of these non-symmetric marriage events. I found quite a number of such events in my own file and it has been instructive, at least in a few cases, to have my attention brought to those marriages. I also wanted to mention that my usual procedure for adding a spouse to an individual who is already in my database is to do an "Add wife", or "Add husband", as appropriate. I have left the (default, I think) TMG prompt for a marriage tag, so after entering the new spouse's individual details the marriage tag screen comes up. I don't know off hand why I have a considerable number of asymmetric marriage tags, but I did start with TMG 5 (or maybe 4?) so there's been lots of scope for strange things to happen! 3. This thread has been discussing an obscure condition where the two Principals do not both have their joint Marriage tag marked Primary. There is a concept of entering Marriage tags which will almost always ensure that TMG will automatically mark both Principals as Primary. The concept is that when you add a new Marriage tag, always link both Principals as part of the creation of that tag. Don't add and exit creating the tag with only one Principal assigned. There are two data-entry practices which will accomplish that. A- Ensure both spouses are added to the database BEFORE you add their Marriage tag. Then you can assign both spouses either by directly entering their IDs or using the Picklist as part of adding that new tag. B- If one spouse is not yet added, begin to add the Marriage tag to the existing spouse. But BEFORE you OK out of that new tag, put your cursor in the ID number field of the "other" spouse and click the "Add Person" icon in the upper right of the Tag Entry window of this new Marriage tag to add the other spouse. Once that spouse is entered, you can now finally OK out of creating the new Marriage tag. Either method will aid TMG in ensuring appropriate settings for Primary. Hope this helps, Michael P.S. There are still ways the Primary settings could become non-symmetric, including inadvertently doing it to your self, so the Filter on the LOE should still be run once in a while as part of "clean-up" actions on your project.

It will be "much, much" less of a problem as V9 sets the Primary indicator appropriately for "most" ways people use to enter tags in the Marriage group. But there are still several ways you can wind up with this non-symmetrical Primary setting by actions "you" take and which TMG cannot automatically "guess" what you want. As the footnote I cited in my on-line book states: "As of Version 8.05 whether or not the marriage tag is Primary for the focus person, the Primary designation now is automatically set for the other spouse in either of the two standard conditions: when an existing person is linked as the other spouse to a marriage tag, or when a new spouse person is created and linked from within a marriage tag." Most times TMG will help, but not always. Maybe an example would help. Let's say you found the information that Fred got engaged to some unknown lady so you entered a tag for Fred of the standard Engagement tag type to record this data. But that tag type is in the Marriage group. Assuming this is Fred's first tag in the Marriage group this Engagement tag will be marked Primary for his Marriage information. Now sometime later you discover a marriage record which shows the engagement was for Fred to Mary. You first add the new Marriage tag only to Fred and OK. Now maybe you add the marriage record as a source. Then you add Mary to the database. Now you come back to Fred's Marriage tag and Edit it to add the citation, and link Mary to this new Marriage tag as his spouse. As of V8.05 this Marriage tag automatically will be made Primary for Mary as it is (likely) her first tag of any tag type in the Marriage group. *BUT* it will *NOT* be made Primary for Fred, because Fred already has a Primary tag in the Marriage group, that old Engagement tag. This Marriage tag is now Primary for Mary but not for Fred. (Try it.) You need to manually set that new Marriage tag as Primary for Fred. Of course that is easy to forget to do. <sigh> That is just one example. Of course, while viewing any person where the Primary indicators are symmetrical, a user "could" select a Marriage tag, press the '*' (asterisk) key, and _manually_ make this tag non-Primary for this person while leaving their spouse still Primary. You *can* shoot yourself in the foot. That is why I developed (and posted) the Filter, because I have been known to do just that to myself! Hope this helps explain, Michael

The CD, if you could find it, is unlikely to be of any use. From the date, it was likely an early version of TMG 9, which was updated several times since, with changes in the file structure. Assuming you made the free upgrades, if you installed that version it would not be able to open your current Project files. If you have not downloaded and saved in a safe place a copy of the latest installer you should do that while you still can. Now when I create a report (after clicking Create Report) , I get a program error box with the message "Cannot update the cursor STRINGS, since it is read-only." Clicking Help gives no help, clicking Cancel aborts the report, and clicking Ignore I get the same message once more, then the report generates. It doesn't seem to be anything to do with Strings.dbf in the Program Files folder, as that is not read-only. Anyone know what this means, and how to cure it? It's not a major problem , as the report generates eventually. Neil

In short, ANY backup scheme that monitors the system for file changes should not be running if it is looking at any directory containing TMG data. That is, no backups were being made to the cloud. You should not have any backup being made of your TMG folders while TMG is running. This especially includes Exporting, Importing, Backups, and Restores. Those files should always be on the local computer -- either downloaded to the computer before operations or copied after operations to folders that are backed up to the cloud. It is best to always select the TMG folders to not be part of you cloud backup. Lee
