And the usage of New Style is almost exclusively for Gregorian dates. One thing to note, is that the start of year should NEVER be an issue with Gregorian dates, as the Gregorian calendar clearly established January 1st as the start of the year, so double year dating doesn't need to be used with any Gregorian date, only Julian dates. -- Richard Damon

    3. Bobbie - Note that problems have been reported when anti-virus and cloud service/backup programs are running or syncing at the same time as you create the GEDCOM. If you are not already doing so, try creating the GEDCOM with no other programs running and see if you get the same error message. 3. Could someone point me to a step by step (and hopefully very simple) directions for creating a GedCom file. I have done this in the past but it was before this version and it did not always work well. I have read the recent posts about GedComs but it is confusing to me since I really don't have a good grasp on the topic. I want to copy my TMG data to another program just as a backup but I want it to be as complete as possible. Thanks so much. 2. Richard Damon via
    3. I agree that it doesn't work the way we might want, but there isn't much that can be done about it. My bigger complaint is that TMG doesn't really have a way to indicate that a date is Julian (aka Old Style), only that it should be double dated (only Old Style dates can be double dated, but not all Old Style dates should be double dated). The behavior of the OS flag makes sense from a programming perspective, as TMG stores double dated dates with the higher year, as that is the one that makes them act like 'normal' dates, and just set an OS flag in the date. The OS suffix on a data also just sets that flag. 1. [TMG] error in TMG's handling of Old Style dates
    2. Barbara Levergood via
    3. I think that there is an error in TMG's handling of Old Style dates, both in the program and in the help system. Could someone look over my logic to make sure I am not missing something? Let's start with a very clear description of what the notations mean in this context. (Yes, I know that there is some confusion about this.) “George Washington was born 11 February 1731/2, which means that the year was still 1731 if the New Year was reckoned as not beginning until 25 March, but that the year was already 1732 if it had begun 1 January. That is, it was 1731 Old Style, or 1732 New Style. […] The date 11 February 1731, Old Style, is identical with 22 February 1732, New Style.” (Jacobus 1980*) What is important for this discussion is that the OS year comes before the slash and the NS year (1 year later) comes after the slash. The 11-day difference is irrelevant for present purposes. So, the date 24 Feb 1690/91 is in year 1690 OS and in year 1691 NS. However, when you enter the following date in a TMG date field, "recognizable" by TMG: 24 Feb 1690 OS TMG incorrectly converts that to: 24 Feb 1689/90 [24 Feb 1690/91 is correct]. Or when you enter 24 Feb 1691 OS TMG incorrectly converts that to: 24 Feb 1690/91 [24 Feb 1691/92 is correct]. The error in TMG appears to be that when a date in OS notation is entered, in the conversion to the slash notation the OS year is incorrectly placed*after* the slash and the NS year (incorrectly 1 year*earlier*) isincorrectly placed*before* the slash. Similarly, in the TMG article on “Date Formats” in the help system: “Recognizable date forms include: 24 Feb 1691 OS 24 Feb 1690/1 24 Feb 1690-1 24 Feb 1690 .. 1 In the above examples, if you enter the date in any of these formats, TMG will enter 24 Feb 1690/91.” And indeed it does, incorrectly. A good reminder that (1) one should keep a verbatim record of the date as stated in the source, and (2) one should not blindly trust date or calendar converters. N.B. My old style date range is set at 1583 to 1752 (Preferences > Program Options > General). I am running TMG 9.03. Barbara * Jacobus, Donald Lines. "Genealogy and Chronology." It is still unusual to be accessing a project stored within the application program folder -- which should be treated as read-only if the OS didn't do that itself. AND as mentioned, that project appears to not have a name since there is nothing in front of the _nd. Visual FoxPro uses a variation of dBase database structure where each "table" consists of three files: an index file, a fixed-width data file, and a variable width text data file (the fixed-width file has a pointer to the variable width to locate string data). TMG groups all the tables that make up a project by using a name of the form <project>_<tableID>. >Every time I try to restore I keep getting the same message - some one else >is using the program. Or can't you. They should just be files -- use your operating system utilities to copy them as needed. (Open the drive from the "(My) Computer" icon, use a command prompt to "cd" to the drive, etc.) SQZ is just a variation of a ZIP archive with contents for building VFP databases. I've never looked at one but since other database archives have also used SQZ my hypothesis is that the ZIP archive collects strings of SQL statements that just do inserts. (Well -- I was wrong. I just opened one -- it IS a plain ZIP archive of the fixed and variable table files, any other accessory files that were specified, but it does NOT include the index files; they get rebuilt as part of the restoration). -- bieber.genealogy@earthlink.net Dennis Lee Bieber HTTP://home.earthlink.net/~bieber.genealogy/

It was the other person working on the file I guess. And it opened to agnes - the gal I was working on the other day. Oh be still my heart! But be sure that folder is not part of any cloud or other syncing backup action. None of my TMG folders are part of any cloud action. I copy the Backup SQZ files to a cloud folder on the hard drive after the backup is complete. In this way, I have three copies of the Backup file -- the (original) Backup on my hard drive for ease of operations, the copy in the cloud folder on the hard drive as a kind of backup, and the copy in the cloud as the real backup. 3. Dennis - It is possible that the errors in Gypsy's message are simply typos when copying the paths. There are good reasons (see Help / Data File Storage) for the specific locations of each group of files, and for average users like me, it is best to stay with the default paths. 3. I created a new project. Added about 8 names - a new project name and backed it up. Opened it up again just fine. Decided to restore it - and went through the process just fine. Nothing about someone else using it. So that apparently means that my backup files in my main project are corrupted after sending them to onedrive to "save" them when the computer gets worked on. However, when I do a backup - I normally backup to the hard drive - which files apparently are now corrupted - and also an external hard drive as well as a flashdrive. (I lost a lot of info years ago when a hard drive crashed after having it less than a month.) Is there any way to move the sqz backup files from either the external hard drive or the flash drive and make them work? Oh, to know what I am doing! gypsy

    3. Tom wrote: > No hidden folders but apparently one hidden file in -o. No hidden > files or folders in exhibits folder. Tom, Second Site (SS) doesn't create any hidden files or folders in the Output (-o) folder. MS Windows will create hidden files under some circumstances. Also, if you add files and/or folders to the Input (-i) folder, SS will copy them to the Output folder and the file attributes, including hidden or not, will be retained on the copies. > Has anyone tried to create a zip folder of a Second Site in > Windows 10? I have not; I am not running Win10. Sime things it might be useful to know: After SS creates the Output folder and its contents, there are no special attributes of those contents, so I don't know why creating a ZIP archive of the Output folder would be any different from creating a ZIP archive of any other (i.e., non-SS) folder. I have seen some people struggle with user names under Win10. Win10 tries to force people to use their "Microsoft Account" to login to Win10 rather than a "Local User" account. This can cause issues when upgrading a PC because many folders and files are stored under the local user's Documents folder, and using them from a different account will sometimes lead to access errors. I don't know if that is a factor in your case. Some automatic backup programs will interfere with SS if they access the Output folder while SS is creating the contents of the folder. SS needs total control of the Output folder while it is creating the site but automatic backup programs sometimes jump into the fray and lock files and/or folders that SS needs to manipulate. That's a recipe for a failure, but again, that's only when SS is creating a site and should not be a factor in this case where you are copying the Output folder after SS has created it. John

    3. I get the following message: c\programfiles(x86)\tmgdv9\_nd.dbf cannot be found. I think I have typed that right. From: gypsy [mailto:gypsy2@chartermi.net] Sent: Friday, October 30, 2015 2:28 PM To: 'tmg@rootsweb.com' <tmg@rootsweb.com> Subject: cannot restore I apparently did something wrong today while sending files to one drive. I cannot open tmg. I have windows 8.1 and version9.5. well I used to. When I open tmg I get the repair mode window. When the program starts - my last project is not highlighted. All the other options - sample, restore etc are. I went to restore and then tried to restore my last sqz file. I keep getting the message that someone else is using the program. I had uninstalled and reinstalled TMG from the setup file. I am flummoxed! gypsy
