When I speak of duplicates, I am meaning having the same p-erson(s) in two projects or two data sets. In on data set or project the person would primarily be a "holding" person in order to complete various reports. For example, if I were to split my project, I would split it between my family and my wife's family. In my family, I would include the basic information for my wife and her parents. I might include her family's direct line back (again only basic data). Similarly for my wife's family, I would include myself and my parents basic information (and again possibly my direct line back (basic data only). As noted, the duplications would be only basic data -- just enough to create charts and reports focused on our children to be somewhat complete. If I needed more at any time, I could create a temporary project just for that purpose. Having just basic data be with the "duplicate" persons would decrease the amount of redundant data entry/editing that would meed to be done. For the most part, there would not be a lot of redundancy as my, my wife, and our parents' data would not change that much. Lee

    3. You are just under the 2GB limit. Apparently the file becomes unusable. From a VFP forum: ____________________________________ Dan Olsson (Programmer) 12 Mar 15 19:37 No it is 2x1024x1024x1024=2 147 483 648 and I have sometimes been going over that limit by appending records, which immidiately renders the dbf useless. BTW the 2GB limit also applies to CDX- and FPT-files Mike Lewis (Programmer) 12 Mar 15 19:50 Yes, I've seen it many times, and I'm sure others have as well. As Dr. D implies, a gigabyte is 1024 megabytes, and a megabyte is 1024 kilobytes, and kilobyte is 1024 bytes. Put another way, a gigabyte is 2 the power of 30 bytes. And it doesn't only apply to DBFs, CDXs and FTPs. It applies to any file that can be opened in VFP. That even includes text files. And it makes no difference how you try to open those files. So using low-level file access won't help. Just about the only way to read those files in VFP would be to use some external component. ____________________________________ Kevin -----Original Message----- From: Erik Hov Sent: Tuesday, November 21, 2017 5:49 AM To: 'The Master Genealogist Rootsweb Email List' Subject: Re: [TMG] 2Gb file limit Just wonder what do you mean when saying unusable? What is the main focus of your project? In my case, it is about a dozen families of mine and my wife's. Some of these are tending to one-name studies while most others tend to be fairly small groups. The majority of the small groups include a number of side tracings trying to get around brick walls in my major focus. If I ever need to split my project, I plane to drop the side groups as they are included just for convenience of the time and are rarely used. Of course, that won;t save that much (probably not more than a few thousand people. For serious splitting, I would have sepaprate out my families and my wife's families. That would require the least amount of duplication between projects. Lee

    2. John Cardinal
    3. Erik, I do not know what will happen when TMG attempts to exceed the 2GB file size limit. I suspect the database file will become corrupted, and TMG will not be able to process that table. The _n.cdx file is the name index. TMG probably won't operate on any project that has a corrupted index file, but having a corrupted name index file seems particularly bad. If you are getting anywhere close to the limit, you should be very, very careful. I do not know if the limit is at exactly 2GB (2,147,483,648 bytes), but if it is, you have about 30MB left and then you will exceed the limit. You should probably consider splitting your project into a separate project. Note that you cannot avoid the problem by using _multiple datasets in the same project_. In a TMG project with multiple datasets, all the datasets share the same set of database files. You need to use completely separate projects. Each TMG project has its own set of database files. John

    3. Virginia, Using the Place Index in Second Site to list people buried in cemeteries is a reasonable thing to do. Constance has shown another way, and her method provides more control of the content and format. However, it does take some initial work to set it up. Once you have done that, however, it's not a lot of extra work to record a burial; just add the cemetery person to the tag. Constance uses P2 for the cemetery person. I probably would have used a witness, but that's a minor quibble. GedSite will probably get a "List of Places" User Item before it gets a "Place Index" User Item. The List of Places will be similar to the List of People in that it will allow you to select which places to include, and to designate what you want to appear for each place. The List of Places User Item is not imminent, probably next year. John

John Cardinal replied with a good Second Site idea: > Constance wrote: >> Basically I make a "Cemetery person" for each cemetery, ... > > You could add a List of People report with cemetery people only > and that would provide an index-like page for the cemeteries. Virginia and Constance, I use Cemetery "people" quite a lot. I have recently been cleaning them up and improving on their pseudo "parents". I have a "mother" who is a location person with "children" of all pseudo people within that area. I also have a "father" with "children" of only interment sites in an area. And these parents in turn have parents for grouping. All of these types of "people" also have custom Name Styles to aid in data entry and to prepend special characters for grouping in indexes. For example: Cemetery -------- Prefix: Reber Hill Cemetery Given: Walnut Township PreSurname: Pickaway County Surname: Ohio Suffix: USA and it lists in the Name index under the location "surname" #Loc: USA. Ohio. Pickaway County. Walnut Township Father ------ Given: USA, Ohio Surname: Interments "he" lists in the Name index under the source "surname" $rc: Interments Mother ------ PreSurname: Pickaway County Surname: Ohio Suffix: USA and "she" lists in the Name index under the location "surname" #Loc: USA. Ohio On the Cemetery person's page the "parents" are listed with links. This "father's" page lists all cemetery "children" in Ohio. The "mother's" page lists both her cemetery and census "children". For complete details see the section in my book about Cemetery People: http://www.mjh-nm.net/STYLE.HTML#CemeteryPerson It is a bit complex to set up, but sure makes it easy to navigate and find what I want. The Cemetery person page produces a list of people in my data set interred there with all pertinent data, as well as tags describing the cemetery's history, exact location, driving instructions, alternate names (for the Name index), etc. See also the custom Cemetery role used to link these Cemetery people as witnesses to the burial tags. http://www.mjh-nm.net/TAGCUSTM.HTML#CemeteryRole Hope this gives you ideas, Michael

It is here: http://www.whollygenes.com/forums201/index.php?/topic/7860-address-cemetery-tag-burial-tag-mods/?hl=cemetery Basically I make a "Cemetery person" for each cemetery, and make the "Cemetery person" the second party [P2] in the burial tag. This and my other sentences makes a nice page to show all people buried in that cemetery and includes mentions of the spouses (usually also buried in the same location.) It also allows for comments about the cemetery itself. See a real example on my website here: http://roots.thehornes.us/g0/p10.htm#i1446 Constance

    3. Your question started with wanting to find out WHO, so that is the list of people report. You want only selected people, which you haven't already selected, so it is a filtered group. In the filter: You want people with Immagratn tags, so you select that as the field, and the sub-field is number of tags, operator is > greater, and the number is 0. You also wanted people with some other tags, so your want the operator 'OR', and a similar expresion for each of those. You also want to setup under options the information about the person you want to display. (Name, ID number, etc) Run the report. If you put your project under 'My Documents', then the path to that is likely different on your new machine. (One reason I don't place my project there, but put all my genealogical files under C:\Genealogy, that way it is in the same place on every machine, so no path problems). -- Richard Damon

That error message usually means that you are doing a backup to a thumbdrive. Make the backup to your TMG Backup folder and then copy it to the thumbdrive. Lee

    3. Just to throw in some trivia. My machine currently takes 61 minutes to create a web site using Second Site - 703,000 people with 14,000 exhibits. The same machine (Mac Pro with SSD drives and 64Gb of RAM) takes around 28 hours to export a Gedcom from TMG. The SS speed I can live with - an hour means I have to take a break from data entry. 28 hours I can’t live with so I politely decline requests for gedcoms of my data, As an aside, my largest TMG file is now 1.6Gb, which is getting scarily close to TMG’s absolute 2Gb limit. So hoping HRE is ready in time! Regards Darryl _______ Interested in the British peerage? 3. I have installed TMG v9 from disc on a new PC. Restored the projects from flash drive. No problems. Now when I exit from a project and try to backup, I get the following message: “Input file read failure. Occurs when a file read operation is performed on a Zip file locked or restricted.” Have not had any trouble in the past. Would appreciate any help I can get to make the backup work so I can get back to working. Thanks. Don

    1. Re: [TMG] Slow GEDCOM Export
    2. Don Ferguson
    3. Basically GEDCOM defines the creation of a text file, so it cannot include media in a native form. A definition for 'embedded multimedia' was added in version 5.4 (the BLOB tag), remained in GEDCOM 5.5 (see Appendix E of the definition), but was dropped in the 5.5.1 draft. The encode/decode definition was convoluted and ambiguous (like most of GEDCOM) and I have never seen any program actually implement it. Given the confusion over what parts of 5.x various programs actually DO support, I would not guarantee its validity in any case. Thus, if you ignore this 'embedded' function, all that a GEDCOM file can carry is a path statement to where images lie - which will be on the creator's computer and thus largely useless to a GEDCOM recipient unless the sender takes the trouble to package media files together with the GEDCOM file. Backing up my project is much faster, no more than a >minute. I have never noted a GEDCOM export to take more than a few minutes. However, I have never exported a GEDCOM with more than a few thousand persons. I have noted that TMG takes longer to export a GEDCOM as the number of person increased. Also an export of a subset of a data set will also increase the length of time. A recent export of a 5000 person subset took quite a long time (15 - 20 minutes?). Having TMG create a new project of that same subset and then exporting a GEDCOM from the new project took a total of about 8 minutes. >I did include exhibits in the GEDCOM file. I don't think TMG will include >internal image exhibits (I don't have any), but it did include external >image exhibits (GEDCOM 5.5 supports that) and it also exported internal text >exhibits. The external image exhibits should not slow TMG down. It doesn't >copy the image files, it writes the path to the file in the GEDCOM file. Hmm! I vaguely remember discussions about including multimedia files in a GEDCOM and later GEDCOM version specs (not sure of the earlier versions) speak to having the file in the GEDCOM in "encoded multimedia lines". Thus the file would be encoded and fully included in the GEDCOM file. My vague recollection of that time is that such encoding had a lot of problems. Including File Paths would get around that problem assuming that the exported GEDCOM was to be imported on the same computer. Otherwise, I would think there would be a lot of work required to prepare the GEDCOM for import on another computer.
