    3. Hi Teresa You've probably already done this but just in case .... try the usual .... close TMG, then Optimise, VFI, Optimise. I've dragged and dropped thousands of images to events and maybe 8 or 10 times an image just wouldn't drop. (Windows 7 so not a Windows 10 issue) Closing down etc as above and also closing the image + the folder it is in has made it possible for me to drag and drop that image. The only thing I've been able to GUESS might have caused this is that I originally tried to drag and drop too quickly. Speed ???? has been involved each time drop has failed but of course there may be no connection at all. Hope it works for you Ann -----Original Message----- From: TMG [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Teresa Elliott Sent: Sunday, December 17, 2017 3:54 PM To: The Master Genealogist Rootsweb Email List <[email protected]> Subject: Re: [TMG] Windows 10 and drop and drag Not on an existing image. 3. 2017-12-16-06T17:00Z Lee - Thanks for the info. You wrote, " . . . if you send the project backup SQZ file to a collaborator, you also need to send the External Exhibits as well. This can be inconvenient." My situation is such that I do not foresee the need to often send the .sqz file, so the use of Dropbox or similar will probably suffice. With 81 exhibits, only 17 of which are external, it seems that it will be easier to change the 17 to internal.  To change those, it seems as though I must find those exhibits person-by-person and in the "Exhibit Log" window, delete them and add them as internal. Be careful with your use of Dropbox (or other Cloud storage). TMG does not work well with it. It can still be a convenient tool. Just be sure that none of your TMG folders/directories are to be synced with the Cloud service. Instead, if a file in a TMG folder needs to be in the Cloud, copy that file to a Cloud-synced folder outside of the TMG folder structure. Similarly, make your TMG backups to the TMG file structure and then copy the SQZ file (and any needed External Exhibits) to a Cloud-synced folder. Coming from the other direction, copy the files from the Cloud to the appropriate TMG folder. This would also apply to files on thumbdrive and the like when exchanging data. >With 81 exhibits, only 17 of which are external, it seems that it >will be easier to change the 17 to internal. To change those, it >seems as though I must find those exhibits person-by-person and in >the "Exhibit Log" window, delete them and add them as internal. Based on the (current) relatively small size of your project (3000 persons & 81 Exhibits), I would not be too concerned with the size of the backup SQZ file. If your project size was more in the 10,000 person or larger, with 100s of Exhibits size then backup file size can start to be a consideration. Considering the easy changing of 64 Exhibits to External to manually changing 17 Exhibits to Internal there is not that great a difference at this time. But I would suggest that you also consider the possibility of wanting to make the Internal to External change in the future. There are other advantages to External Exhibits than just reducing Backup file size. One is that of editing photos. It is be a lot easier to edit an External Exhibit than an Internal Exhibit. I find it much easier to store my image files in a "master" folder. Then, I copy a "master" file to a work folder. The edited file is the moved to TMG. If I later decide that the TMG Exhibit is not as I wish (usually after I print some reports) then I start over with the "master" file and go through the same process giving the now end result the same file name as before in TMG. Insofar as collaboration is concerned, I create the TMG backup without the External Exhibits included. Then I create a ZIP file of the desired Exhibits. I have a number of sub-fioders for my TMG Exhibits folder. Each of these is for a separate family/collaborator. So it is easy to make the ZIP file of the desired sub-folder. In this way, I send two files -- the project SQZ file and the Exhibits ZIP file. It is not as convenient as including Exhibits (either as Internal or External), but it is not that bad either. Often, I don't need to send the Exhibits ZIP file if I have not made as changes since the last exchange. As with everything in TMG, each user needs to evaluate and use it as best suits them. Lee

    3. 2017-12-16-06T15:15Z ¿Are there programmatic ways to: 1.  determine whether an exhibit is internal, 2.  where all internal exhibits are, and 3.  change all internal exhibits to external? ¿If so, what are those ways? I have recently learned the recommendation to have only external exhibits.  Most of my exhibits are internal.  I believe that most, if not all, of my exhibits are in C:\Users\David Alan Stamm\Documents\The Master Genealogist v9\Exhibits. 3. Lately when I run "optimize" and then "VFI" the VFI reports says one exhibit can't be found. How do I determine what exhibit can't be found? Is there a log created by VFI that would show this? For the last few years the only new exhibits are photos attached to people. Periodically I run a List of People to check whether my "Photo" flag is in synch with my attachments: (Photo = Y and # of Exhibits = 0) OR (Photo = ? and # of Exhibits > 0) End Is the VFI report telling me that for one person I have my Photo flag checked "Y" and my photo attached log (i.e., the camera icon) is currently a frowning face icon?......that is, something has be attached, but the address is not for an existing exhibit? 1. [TMG] Follow up on RUG meeting on HRE
    2. Janis Rodriguez
    3. The RUG (Roots Users Group of Virginia) December 2017 meeting was full of exceptional circumstances. We knew our members and other TMG users wanted to hear about the History Research Environment (HRE) project so our Executive Committee (EC) tried to do everything possible to make the presentation available to a wide audience. RUG member and “local" presenter John Lucas traveled from Delaware in advance of the snow forecast and, although RUG’s procedure is to cancel a meeting when Fairfax County Public Schools cancels activities, the RUG EC decided the Saturday meeting would proceed despite this policy. After technical difficulties broadcasting the sound on the prerecorded presentation from HRE developers Robin Lamacraft and Don Ferguson in Australia, John Lucas stepped in and delivered the presentation from the slide show reading from the script. During the Q&A session following the program, Robin Lamacraft answered questions from Adelaide, Australia, very early in the morning Australian time, with Don Ferguson available from Melbourne, Australia, as needed. Unfortunately, the RUG EC was unaware that our conferencing app join.me had recently lowered the number of connections for a session to 50 attendees. Our organization was not notified of the change. We apologize for asking people to sign off to try and restart join.me. We realize that some viewers could not sign on again because of the 50-person connection limitation. We will ensure does not recur for larger presentations in the future. Because of our unexpected problems with join.me limitations, the HRE presentation and the Questions and Answers have been uploaded to the Roots User Group website and are available to all without needing a password to sign-in. There are two options to view the programs. Go to the rootsusers.org main page and in the left column, click on the link titled "HRE Update Presentation." A second option is to click the following link: http://www.rootsusers.org/HRE-update.html. The HRE also provided RUG with the pre-recorded presentation and it is available from the same webpage. (Note, it is very large) When reviewing the audio of the Q&A session, we discovered that questions were a little difficult to hear, though the answers from Robin in Australia were quite audible. The HRE folks are developing a Q&A PowerPoint which will available on their website and will be added to our page as well. We wish to thank John Lucas, Robin Lamacraft and Don Ferguson and the entire HRE team for allowing us to hear about the software development. We hope to hear more as it progresses. FYI: The HRE team seeks volunteers with software skills in Java, Eclipse, and HR2. The HRE website has the details.(https://historyresearchenvironment.org/) To paraphrase a famous quote, their motto might well be “Make no small plans for only big plans stir men to action.” Again, our apologies! That's odd. My first thought was that there might be a conflict with an existing file and/or something in the Windows file handling wasn't working right. But, TMG automatically assigns a dissimilar name (adds a "1" to the filename) if a same filename is already there. Also, Windows properly reports the Read Only situation. Lee

Most of my >exhibits are internal. I believe that most, if >not all, of my exhibits are in C:\Users\David >Alan Stamm\Documents\The Master Genealogist v9\Exhibits. Anything in that directory constitutes an external exhibit (or, at least, it was an external exhibit -- the file would remain even if you made the exhibit internal). The only answer to #1 (that I know of at the moment) is to open the exhibit log, set for all exhibits/all types, and then one-at-a-time select each exhibit and look at the short properties display on the lower right -- which will say (Internal) or (External)... Addendum: TMG Utility has the ability to export the Exhibit Log as HTML, which will show internal/external, path to external, etc. #2: Internal exhibits are stored within a Visual FoxPro table -- table I ("eye") per http://www.whollygenes.com/files/tmg9fstr.zip . For #3: TMG Utility has an Export Images (with option to convert Internal to External). However, I don't know if it does anything for TEXT exhibits (or anything other than images). For text exhibits, you'll likey have to select them in the exhibit log, view/edit, select all text/copy, then create a text file using some text editor and paste the result. And then comes the painful part of deleting the internal exhibit and adding the external text file as an exhibit -- I've not taken time to see if that can be done as some sort of in-place replacement or if you have to make a list of all places referenced and manually add the new exhibit to them. Internal text exhibits aren't too bad -- even a long one is only going to be a few kBytes unless you are OCRing a whole book. In contrast, even small images will likely run to MBytes (a 43-page RTF, which is not plain text so kept external, is only 320kB, whereas a small newspaper clipping as a scanned image is 718kB and my diplomas run 2MB. Most of the external text files I have -- emails -- are less than 5kB) -- [email protected] Dennis Lee Bieber HTTP://home.earthlink.net/~bieber.genealogy/
