    3. In the Master Tag Type List window choose the tag type to be edited, then click the Edit button to open the Tag Type Definition window. Click the Roles and Sentences tab, choose the role you want to edit on the left side, then edit its sentence. Exit by clicking OK and Close. 1. [TMG] TMG and Recent Windows 10 Update
    2. ChiMacher
    3. Hi TMGers: I just want to share my experience with the most recent Windows 10 update. After the update my TMG program became corrupted - I received the error message OLE Error Code OX80040154. This may have just been a coincidence after the update; but I personally believe that something in the Windows update corrupted my TMG program. I researched the error message and it seems the only way to correct the situation it to do the following: - Uninstall TMG, plus delete all the TMG files in Programs (x86) - Reinstall TMG - Note when reinstalling you need to right click on the installer and choose "Administrator" or else you will receive an error message and it will not install. At least that was my experience. I know this is very frustrating - as it was for me. However we all have a big investment of time and data input into TMG and NEED to keep our program up and running. Hope you do NOT experience this problem. Just in case you do, I hope you find this information helpful. Wishing you all a Merry Christmas and a Very Happy New Year, Sandy Imyak

    3. Terry, Yes, after receiving the error on backup, that's the first place I looked. On one instance, "loadmode" was the only thing in the Backup path. On another occasion, "loadmode" was inserted in the Exhibits path. In both cases, I corrected it by selection. 3. Further: On doing a file search, I find: C:\Users\Robert\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files (x86)\The Master Genealogist v9\LoadMode\ LoadMode folder created 12/17/17 when I first started noticing this. And that folder is empty. And this is the only instance of LoadMode I have found. It may be that a glitch in TMG loading/startup created this folder for some reason, perhaps as an error mechanism. It does not appear (at this time) to be malignant. I'll just keep any eye on things for now. Thanks to Dennis and Richard for input. Reinstall should always be the last resort -- especially if one does not understand what is happening. My first suggestion would be to run a deep virus scan, as from your short description one could get the impression that something is trying to hijack file paths. I'm not finding much on Google -- just some mention of a javascript module... http://www.fixfilesystems.com/esny/2s5y2s0t8e0m/loadmode.js.html http://www.fixexehub.com/ehnu/1h7u1b3e7x8e/loadmode.min.js.html https://www.windowstoclean.com/lprocess/326259_loadmode-js-errors-how-to-fix-it.html No details, with a report date of today -- no mention of corrupting file paths themselves -- so may be a wild goose, but... I do find a loadmode.js apparently as part of something called CodeMirror https://github.com/codemirror/CodeMirror -- [email protected] Dennis Lee Bieber HTTP://home.earthlink.net/~bieber.genealogy/

    3. Recently I have started getting error messages concerning "loadmode" It started by inserting "\loadmode|\" into my backup path, with the error message that the path does not exist. Today upon startup, I got a lengthy error message to the effect that exhibit path "loadmode" did not exist, asking if I wanted to use the default. Response no, TMG loaded and I updated path in Preferences. This has occurred in both of my projects. Have run all Maintenance options a number of times after each occurrence of the error. My question(s)-- What's happening? How do I prevent this recurring? Would a reinstall be advisable? 1. Re: [TMG] How to manage DNA with TMG
    2. LornaMoa
    3. Robin, I keep my DNA match investigations separate from TMG, only noting in TMG (flag) if any of of "my lot" have tested, and what sort of test they took. Close matches, or matches that prove a brickwall will sometimes have more data held but mostly as source info with notes as to why a relationship conclusion was reached. This is for atDNA yDNA I handle completely within TMG - using SecondSite to produce my surnames project yDNA tables. I do however use RootsMagic as my atDNA analysis/DNA Match database extensively. Warning: I am a DNA and genie addict and I really mean "extensively".<g> That way I can use the ability to connect from RMagic to FamilySearch/MyHeritage/FindMyPast and Ancestry  to build up/check the trees of the matches, keep track of pedigrees of matches, immediately see (via colour coding of test takers) if anyone down a line has tested etc. FWIW the name of the match I normally enter as best I can eg if there's a tree attached you can usually infer a surname. I add the ancestry username into the nickname field on RM, their GEDMatch id / kit number if available into the Suffix I do have a DNAMatch custom fact/tag for matching groups of interest with those matching at the same spot attached as shares aka witnesses where I have roles set up for the different match predicted relationships (eg FTDNA1-2, 23andme5th, Anc4-6) bewteen the test taker and the match The description of the fact contains eg Chr 01P/050 LIH/name1/name2/ which tells me that I'm the test taker (the LIH) this group is on my paternal chromosome 1 (the 01P) start position 50 mbp with the names being the closer matches to help me identify the group further and the notes show anything I know about  the MRCA (Most Recent Common Ancestors) so far identified between any members of the group I keep the profile info provided by a match in their DNA tag (comes standard with RM) eg surname/location lists, "about", haplogroups and also keep the contact info, including links to their online trees in the address info. The source for the person's existence in the database contains the summary match details to the test taker that brought them to my attention, usually the summary of the match from FTDNA FamilyFinder Match screen, the Ancestry/MyHeritage/23andme match details. I also use RM's groups (TMG Focus groups equivalent, sort of) to be able to  quickly find eg tested descendants of family y, a cluster of Ancestry testers that connect somehow being worked on, those matches likely to crack brickwall xyz..... This has all been refined over several years and works really well _*for me*_, in conjunction with my personal mySQL database with all the downloaded segment/match data from the testing companies plus additional data added as I analyse the data. GenomeMatePro does the same sort of thing,  and has support and documentation <g> If a rellie pops up as a DNA match and they aren't already in TMG, they get added with the necessary connected branches with normal sources etc and the dnatestee flag set appropriately but all the speculative rellies are all completely separate. Chuck, When GedSite 2.01 is released, it will have great support for TMG projects, but that support won't be quite as complete as Second Site offers. For example, it's unlikely that GedSite will import the DNA records in a TMG project. There may also be some challenges with other data types that are present in a TMG project but are not present in a GEDCOM file. I am offering the direct import from TMG for a few reasons. 1 - People who use TMG and other software but do not have Second Site will be able to buy a single program--GedSite--rather than two. 2 - GedSite is my main focus now and it has some features and capabilities that are not in Second Site. For example, the Map User Item released today in GedSite 2 has more event filtering capabilities and the maps support "marker clusters". Given the TMG support will only be lacking TMG features that are lightly used, some people may opt for GedSite to have access to its unique features. 3 - I have some other plans for the new components I am writing to read the TMG database directly, and so the opportunity was there to add it to GedSite. Also, I can use the TMG direct import as a test of non-GEDCOM data for GedSite while using a database with which I am very familiar. That will help if I ever add a direct import for data from other programs. John

    3. Hi Robin, I don't see a huge benefit to giving the date of the test, except for people testing on chips that have changed. So for 23andMe there could be some benefit to using a test date, maybe for Ancestry. 1. [TMG] Announcing GedSite 2.0 with a special note for TMG users
    2. John Cardinal
    3. Give yourself a present! GedSite v2.00 is now available. This is a major new release with new features and enhancements, and it is the first paid upgrade since GedSite 1 was released 13 months ago. There have been 28 free upgrades since then, 15 of which included significant new features. To read the newsletter for this release, and for download and purchase information, please use the following (shortened) URL: https://goo.gl/JNE4rz The newsletter includes a special announcement for TMG users: Version 2.01 of GedSite, a free upgrade of GedSite 2 scheduled for release in January 2018, will include an option to read TMG project data *directly* from the TMG database and without exporting via GEDCOM. This will avoid multiple issues with TMG's GEDCOM export. For example, reading the TMG project directly will allow GedSite to use TMG's sentence templates; TMG does not include sentence templates in its GEDCOM export. You cannot use GedSite 2 with a GedSite 1 license. All users need to purchase one of two products: . If you have a GedSite 1 license: https://goo.gl/PY1Ewj . If you do not have a GedSite 1 license: https://goo.gl/zVhaP4 After you purchase, I will send you registration information and download instructions. If you encounter difficulty purchasing the program, please contact me off-list using my JFCardinal address at Gmail. If you have any trouble installing or using GedSite, post a message on the GedSite discussion list (GS-L), or contact me directly, your choice. Posting on the list will allow other users to benefit from the discussion of the problem and the solution. If you'd like to publish your site online, please choose Family History Hosting. We'll help you understand and navigate the process of acquiring a domain name and publishing your site. The Publish command in GedSite makes publishing easy! https://www.familyhistoryhosting.com John Cardinal Author of GedSite and Second Site

Can I >also record their real name in that name tag or will I have to have >another name tag for that when the time comes? For these type persons, I first try to come up with a Surname. This sometimes is hard as there is not enough paternal line in the tree. But, most of the time, a Surname can be inferred. And, my Source Citation and Citation Detail always reflect how much the entry is just a plain guess. The Surety for the Source Citation is almost always a 0 although a few show a 1. These are initial entries and change as I learn the "real" name and have a better Source. I just enter the name from the tree as the Given Name regardless of how weird they look. I have one person I just entered yesterday named "Catlover" Smithy. I also select the Name Tag to be a Name-Nick Tag. Of course, since it is the Primary Tag, the Name-Nick acts like a Name-Var, but after I find a real name, it often remains as a nickname Tag anyway, so it is ready. I just add the Name-Var Tag and make it Primary.. Some of these Name-nick Tags do not survive after learning the real name, but many do and many also have other changes if they do survive. Lee

    3. Hi Robin, I keep my DNA data to a minimum in TMG, mostly working with it in GenomeMate. In TMG, I do have a DNA tag. The Principal sentence is [P] <was|and [PO] were> DNA tested <[M]> <[D]> <[L]> so for instance Todd Huebner was DNA tested at 23andMe (autosomal) in 2013. Additional roles are YDNA known and YDNA surmised, and MtDNA known and MtDNA surmised. The surmised versions are for people who didn't test but should have the same result as the person who did test. I'm not entirely satisfied with my sentences but [P1S] <|and [PO]> Y-DNA haplogroup was shown to be <[M]> <[D]> <[L]> comes out as Todd Huebner's Y-DNA haplogroup was shown to be R-CTS3402 (formerly R1a1a) in 2013 in FTDNA. The surmised role [P] <is|and [PO] are> believed to belong to Y-DNA haplogroup <[M]> <[D]> <[L]> comes out as Wayne Vincent Huebner is believed to belong to Y-DNA haplogroup R-CTS3402 (formerly R1a1a). So while they need some tweaking, they're functional. I guess you could do a History-group tag in which the witnesses share the same segment, but personally I would rather just handle that data in GenomeMate. I find it sufficient just to note which known relatives have tested and where, somewhat in the spirit of listing their email addresses with valid dates in my email tag. 3. I have not yet begun to track DNA, but I had been thinking that this is another case where "pseudo" people would work in TMG. I thought I might have the record be a "person".  Depending on the type of test it could be either Male or Female.  One custom tag type would have Principals be this person and the "real" person of this test to show it was their test.  Then I thought of having a custom tag type to document interesting features of the test. Another custom tag type might link this test to a matching test "person" describing the degree of match.  I have even been considering how I might use ancestor/descendant relationships of such "persons" to reflect the degree of match and so that TMG and SecondSite charts could be used. Finally I considered a separate custom tag type to link "real" people together, perhaps in the History group, where each person's Witness memo describes their relationship to this group of people. Hope this gives you ideas,

    3. I would like to start a discussion about how to use TMG, not as an analysis tool because of course it isn’t designed for that, but as an organizational and management tool for DNA matches. I have watched the presentation by John Clark to the Roots User Group of Arlington a month or so ago and I see how he uses it, although he hasn’t yet answered some questions I have. I have created a simplistic “DNA Match” tag in a first attempt to flag people in my database that I know for sure are matches. I’m not terribly imaginative, and I don’t know what kinds of details about the matches I should record in TMG. (Like do I only need to record cms and segments or do I need to record chromosome numbers and whatever else goes along with that?) I need to formulate a plan for TMG soon because like you, I’m getting new matches every week. I manage tests for my parents, children, husband, cousins. I need a solution that will work for their matches when they don’t also match me. What I think I want is a way to record matches for reference. Hence my DNA Match tag. But I also want to record matches for output in narrative reports so I might need another tag for that. Or maybe it doesn’t have to be complicated and I can just add Roles and Sentences to my tag. I probably should have a custom report to list these people so that I can keep track of them (and I have a lot of this in an Excel spreadsheet, so TMG wouldn’t be my only documentation). I would appreciate some ideas about how you’ve solved this and how it works for you. What tags have you set up? What roles/sentences have you set up for output? I have one specific question right off the bat: Let’s say I have a close match who is not in my database (I can tell that because of their tree). I want to add him/her but they don’t use their real name on Ancestry. It seems that I can use the “other name” field to record their username until I know what their real name is. Can I also record their real name in that name tag or will I have to have another name tag for that when the time comes? Thanks for all your help! Robin in Short Pump
