Now I have installed TMG9. I work in the test phase with copies of my data. Allow me to fool a little; I will try to put myself deeper into the problem later. If I try to open one of my old projects, I get a message that I will need to open it in the original version (5 or 6) of TMG and make a backup there from. I have a lot of backup files, so I take the most recent and click on "Import". The funny thing is that in the dialog box is: "The Master Genealogist v4.x or earlier (* .SQZ)". Why v4 ??? I locate the file and click OK. The unpacking starts, but when it's complete, the buttons "Next" and "Finish" are grayed out. -- Kind regards Kurt Hansen > Den 23. dec. 2017 kl. 17.04 skrev Edward A Feustel <[email protected]>: > > So did you make a backup and do a restore? Erik, If your definition of being related to includes anyone to whom there is a connection by birth or marriage, then I think you are talking about what I call "connected." You can't get that with a simple filter, but my article at http://tmg.reigelridge.com/connected.htm tells you how to set a flag to find those that are not "connected" to the main body of people in your Project. Jim Byram reads those >posts and he is the expert. No, TMG v9 will not open a TMG v6 project, it must be Restored using a TMG v6 Backup SQZ file. I have a copy of the TMG v6.01 installation file that I could send Kurt. The question is what version of Windows Kurt has. TMG v6 will install in Win 10. But my copy was to a 32-bit version of Win 10. It gave me a warning about a module that was not designed for Win 10. I suspect this module is used for reports and would not be a problem otherwise. I opened a v6 project and created a backup with it all without any problem. I then Restored that project to TMG v9. It appears to have Restored OK although I have not done extensive testing. There are some caveats about installing TMG v6 to a later versions of Windows. With TMG v6, the program and all data files were placed in the Program Files TMG folder. TMG v9 also does this, but on first start-up, it copies that data to the user's operation folder. So in Win Vista and later, these data files need to be moved to the user's folder. Also, the File Paths in Preferences (Program=>General & Project=>Advanced) must be updated. Even then, the Backup function initially want to backup to Drive A:, and that must be changed. Lee

The funny thing is that in the dialog box is: "The Master Genealogist v4.x or earlier (* .SQZ)". Why v4 ??? Kurt, It says TMG 4 or earlier because you only *Import *data from versions of TMG before 5. For 5 and later you *Restore *the old backup. TMG 4 and earlier were totally different programs, with very different file formats. TMG 5 and later are versions of the new program. Terry Reigel

The issue is what do you mean by "related to me"? Blood relatives only? Their spouses? Their parents, siblings, and other spouses? You have to define that. There is an article on my website describing one way to create a "Related To" flag, using my definition of "related." You might have to modify it to suit your definition. It's at http://tmg.reigelridge.com/related-by.htm The Flag, once created, is very useful for applying accents to tell you at a glance who is related to you. Terry Reigel

I don't think so. If not TMG 6, 7, and 8 installers are available and would be able to open it and create a backup. > Terry, > > I am not seeing your posts via TMG-L. No, it clearly doesn't hurt, but it does cause issues with the paths which are stored in the project files. If you don't change the paths backups and exports will go to the old folder, and when adding Exhibits TMG will default to the old location. In addition, paths are stored with any saved report defs and they will also go to the old location -- whether that's an issue depends on where they were specified before. > The issue I see when I connect to other people's PCs is > they don't know which end is up. I understand that concern, and it's probably a good idea to use a set of folders that are not mis-labeled. Terry Reigel
Erik, I don't know to what extreme you want to decide "related to". I would create a custom flag called RELATED_TO and then run whatever List of People reports with the auxiliary output setting this new custom flag to "Y" until you have flagged all those which you call "related to". Now create your report: Report - List of - People Filtered group ( # of Mothers <> 0 OR # of Fathers <> 0 ) AND RELATED_TO <> Y You could add output columns to give the names of the parent IDs but will probably run very slowly. Hope this helps. Create a scratch flag ("Related"), initial value False/No Run LoP using a filter to find "Ancestor of" of "Descendant of" "you or Related = True", have the report set the flag to true. Kurt, If the project was written by TMG v7, you can open it with TMG v9. When you do, TMG v9 will warn you that the project was written by an earlier version and will ask you to confirm that you want to open it and update it to the current version. The only way I know to determine the version of a project is to look in its ".PJC" file. If the project was written by TMG v7, it will have a "PjcVersion" of 8. In the PJC file that will look something like this: [Stamp] ... PjcVersion=8 ... Given the other evidence (the exe files you have), it's likely that the project was written by TMG v7, and you can skip inspecting the .PJC file. Here's what I would do if you have the TMG project data files in a folder, i.e., not in a .SQZ backup file: 1 - Copy the folder that contains the TMG project data files to the "Projects" folder under TMG v9 in your Documents folder. If you do not copy the files, when TMG updates the project, it will update it in its current location. Often, that location will be named with something that indicates it was written by prior version. I think that's confusing; you don't want a TMG v9 project stored in a TMG v7 Projects folder. 2 - Open the copy from #1 in TMG v9. TMG v9 will prompt you as described earlier. Allow TMG to make a backup in case something goes wrong. If you have a .SQZ file that you think was written by TMG v7, I think you can use the File > Restore command in TMG to convert it to TMG v9. I forget those steps. If you have any difficulty, reply here and I'll investigate. John

Kurt, it looks like you last used TMG 7 as you thought. In that case, you can simply Open the Project with TMG 9. It will offer to make a backup of your data and then update the data to the TMG9 format . Allow it to do both, so you have a backup in the old format just in case. It should then work fine. I am running Windows 10 in Oracle Virtual Machine on my iMac. Now I am going to install TMG 9 and restore an old backup of my TMG data. Since my payment hasn’t been transferred yet, I am waiting. Kurt, TMG will run for 30 days as a trial, so you should be able to use it now. What version of TMG wrote your backup file? The steps you need to take to restore the backup vary based on which program wrote it. John
