The Seattle TMG Users Group meeting scheduled for Saturday, January 13, is cancelled. Our next meeting will be Saturday, February 10.
G'day John I added the reminder about CTRL-F so viewers could also Find places. I try to add info and/or photos where they are relevant to several people on the site. See: Morpeth; Raymond Terrace; Singleton, Wollongong and Ieper for what is possible. Richard, Thanks -- yes, that is what I did to insert the exclusion character in the Place Comment I described. So is the Master Place List the only way in TMG to get at the Place Comment field? Is your usage tailored to SS output, or do you use TMG reports (or both)? My normal output is via Second Site, its been ages since I ran a genealogical report in TMG (do run list-of reports for analysis). I think the MPL is the only way to get to that data. You can edit the Comment by finding the place in the Master Place List, and selecting it and then Edit. I have been placing a lot of comments into my places. I have been experimenting with place mapping over the past few days, with both SecondSite and GedSite. I have been very late coming to place mapping myself, but am getting more and more intrigued by it. As others have remarked it can get quite addictive! In SS I have, in Data -> Places: Place Levels 3 through 6 checked; Use Place Style and Use Icon for Links both checked, Only Places with LatLong is unchecked. Google Maps and StreetMap (UK only) are checked. Today, in a SS build of my TMG database I noticed for the first time that one place (Malagash, Cumberland County, Nova Scotia) had a superscript icon "i" beside it in the Master Place Index generated by SS. Clicking that led to a page (pi555.htm) with the rather mysterious sole content: (Wallace Methodist Circuit) That is the only pixxx.htm file in the SS make-site log. I checked the person details for some likely individuals in TMG but could find nothing which would lead to this. However, in TMG's Master Place List the above parenthetic phrase does appear in the Comment field by one of the entries for the town of Malagash. Selecting edit on that place record shows that there is indeed a box for entering a Comment, which contains the above phrase. The place style is U.S. Standard Place. I cannot find anything in TMG about entering (or removing!) such a Comment for a place. The only thing I can think of is that this came along when some years ago I imported records from my sister-in-law's FTM file, which certainly had material in strange places from the perspective of a TMG user. [As a side comment I have since got her switched over to using RootsMagic and am now using GedSite to generate web pages for her material. I never again want to go through the hassle of all the cleanup (but still incomplete) I did after that import from FTM.] Would anybody be able to confirm that such a thing can happen? I.E. Could importing from FTM, or perhaps other programs, lead to entries in a Place Comment field? I have just inserted a leading "-" in front of that Comment, using the Master Place List, so the 'info icon' shouldn't appear again in SecondSite. Thanks! John Cordes P.S. I really appreciate Terry Reigel's wonderful article about mapping in Second Site: http://tmg.reigelridge.com/SecondSite-map-links.htm Full of tremendously useful ideas and suggestions.

My TMG locked up while trying to print a report. I had to go to CTR+ALT+DEL to stop the program from running. When I returned to TMG the first message I received was “Repair mode has been activated” but it let me proceed to open a project. When I tried to open the project I had been working on when the program locked up, I couldn’t open it because the “project was in use elsewhere.” There is no other program using the project. No problem opening Sample project and one other project I have. I rebooted the computer (twice) but that did not end the problem. I downloaded CCleaner and deleted temp files and cleaned the registry. That did not solve the problem. I have tried researching this project in the TMG-L archives. Using both Safari and Chrome, I cannot open the archives. On the Wholly Genes forum I found two people with the same problem. They ended up having to send a zip file to Jim Byram for him to fix the problem. Anyone know if he is still available to fix the problem or is there anyone else out there who can help me? Thanks, Louise Rorer Rosett
Hello, I can’t open my current project on TMG 9.05. While trying to print a report, the program locked up. The only way I could regain control was to hit CTR, ALT, DEL. When I went back to open TMG. I couldn’t open the last database I had been using. An error message said it was in use elsewhere on the computer. So I restarted the computer and still get the same message: database in use elsewhere on the computer. Any suggestions what I should do? Thanks, Louise
This issue was noted quite some time ago. The fundamental problem is that the single character for the flag state is what is actually stored in the data base. Reordering of flags and other flag state label operations on these built-in flags were not prohibited as they should have been. Hence the design/settings of flags in HRE has been modified. Friends I'm doing a talk to our TMG-Sydney (NSW) User Group next month on TMG Flags. I know that a while back when I changed the sequence of the Living Flag values from ?,N,Y I caused a problem, and one of the members of this list pointed out the error. So now, can someone please tell me which Flag Values must NOT be altered. I guess Living and Sex are definite candidates ... Thanks -- Bruce Fairhall

They are: Sex Living Birth Order Multiple Birth Adopted Ancestor Interest Descendant Interest The reason is you can't actually "change" the values for these flags. Rather, you are "translating" them. This facility is intended for users of languages other than English, so the values will make sense in the language the person is using. However TMG's understanding of each value is not changed. (I'm not sure that actually matters for Multiple Birth, Ancestor Interest, and Descendant Interest since I don't think TMG actually does anything with those three flags.) You should only change the values of custom flags. Terry Reigel
Bruce W Fairhall wrote: > I know that a while back when I changed the sequence of the Living Flag > values from ?,N,Y I caused a problem, and one of the members of this > list pointed out the error. Hi Bruce, As others have reported, the issue is with changing values of Standard Flags, such as your Living Flag. If you are using the default TMG Language of English (U.S.) the program will prevent you from doing this. But if you are using an alternate language, e.g. English (U.K.), TMG will think that you are "translating" the values to characters with more meaning in that language. But the "meanings" of the values in the order in English (U.S.) will remain. For more details see the topic in my book about Flags and Languages: http://www.mjh-nm.net/STYLE.HTML#FlagLanguages Michael P.S. Good luck on your talk. Erik, If your definition of being related to includes anyone to whom there is a connection by birth or marriage, then I think you are talking about what I call "connected." You can't get that with a simple filter, but my article at http://tmg.reigelridge.com/connected.htm tells you how to set a flag to find those that are not "connected" to the main body of people in your Project. Aaargh, Terry. As I said: I have allowed myself to be a little inpatient and to fool around and hour or two. Now I have *restored* an old project and at a quick look everything looks fine. Now I must try to get an overview of what has changed since v.6/7. I am related to most of the people in my very large project ,but have also entered parents for someone I am not related to ,and I want to find those I am not related to.... If I set a flag "related to" ,that flag will mark all those I am related to ,and that`s very many. But probably it will make it easier to find those I am not related to by using the filters. -----Opprinnelig melding----- Fra: TMG [mailto:[email protected]] På vegne av Jack McNees Sendt: 23. desember 2017 17:17 Til: 'The Master Genealogist Rootsweb Email List' <[email protected]> Emne: Re: [TMG] filter?..... Erik, I don't know to what extreme you want to decide "related to". I would create a custom flag called RELATED_TO and then run whatever List of People reports with the auxiliary output setting this new custom flag to "Y" until you have flagged all those which you call "related to". Now create your report: Report - List of - People Filtered group ( # of Mothers <> 0 OR # of Fathers <> 0 ) AND RELATED_TO <> Y You could add output columns to give the names of the parent IDs but will probably run very slowly. Hope this helps.
