This could be for GEDCOM export, or with Second Site when it build Geo-Coding for the place. It also means that you need to a different style for each distinct labeling that you need to use (think other countries). As to handling multiple entries in a single location variable, I generally try to avoid it. If an event seems to want multiple locations mentioned, it is likely one that I am custom building the full sentence, and I will put the extra places into the sentence in the memo, using a tag which shows most of the data with a [M]. I will sometimes split the tag into two tags for example to say that they move from on location to another, and use the sentence merging code to combine them into 1 apparent sentence. -- Richard Damon

Brian, I use only the [L2], [L3], etc. variables exclusively. I often use them in Memos and custom Sentences in Tags and and find it easy to remember which is which by referring to the place fields in the Tag Entry Screen - the first field is [L1], the second [L2], etc. Terry Reigel

    1. [TMG] TMG Location Variables - Followup
    2. Brian Gross
    3. Hello, Thank you, John and Robin, for the information about Location Variables. I have a related question about creating sentences with different entities in [L4]. I've been entering entire phrases in [L4] like "Colfax County" or "Plaquemine Parish" in order to have sentences like "Bill lived in [L]" read "Bill lived in Clarkson, Colfax County, Nebraska" or "Bill lived in "Plaquemine, Iberville Parish, Louisiana". (I don't want sentences that read "Bill lived in Clarkson, Colfax, Nebraska".) In order to eliminate the descriptors "County" and "Parish" from [L4] I modified the templates in the Master Style List to read " <[County] County, >" or "<[Parish] Parish, >". This works fine as for sentences like "Bill lived in [L]". Sentences that would use the labels independently need to be written as "Bill lived in [L3], [L4] County, [L5]". Is there a side-effect to this approach that I might not have noticed? So, can anyone share how they handle things like counties and parishes? (More generally, multiple entities stored in a single Location Variable.) Thanks for your help! Brian

    1. Re: [TMG] Location Variables
    2. John Cardinal
    3. Brian, The sentence variables [L4], [LCN], and [COUNTY] are all synonyms and there is no technical advantage to one over the other. Likewise with [L3], [LCI], and [CITY], and the other sets of names for the part values. I think of those sets as the numbered place variables, the abbreviated place variables, and the unabbreviated place variables. I suggest that you pick one set and use that set consistently. So, use [L3], [L4], and [L5], etc., together rather than mixing [L3] and [L4] with [STATE] and [COUNTRY], etc. When editing a Place Style output template, you should only use the label assigned to a part in that Place Style. So, for example, don't use [COUNTY] in a Place Style output template when you have named that part [PARISH] in the template. At one point, TMG allowed that error and produced the output you might expect, so many users didn't catch it. (That might still be true; I can't recall.) However, according to the formal rules, [COUNTY] has no meaning in a Place Style output template where the label for the 4th part is "PARISH". Second Site follows the rules, and it will issue an error message in that case. You cannot use Place Style labels in sentence templates. So, while [PARISH] is valid in a Place Style output template that has PARISH as a label, [PARISH] is not valid in a Tag Type sentence even if the sentence is assigned to a tag whose place uses a Place Style that includes that label. When editing the project-wide "Short Place Template", I recommend that you use the [Ln] versions, i.e., [L1], [L2], etc. The short place template applies to all places, and those places may have different styles and different uses for the various place parts. Using the non-specific labels may remind you of that, and avoid some issues that might arise otherwise. I hope this helps. John

The file TMG9-5 setup.exe has properties that can't be copied to this new location. 3. I would guess that the File System on the Memory Stick is not the same as the one on the Computer. An example is FAT32 on the stick and NTFS on the computer.  Some security and sharing information may not get copied. The solution is to reformat the stick to NTFS and then do the backup. 1. [TMG] TMG9.05 will not back up
    2. Nick Shelley
    3.     Many thanks to everyone who encouraged and helped me make the transition to TMG9.05.  I have it installed on two machines, one running Windows 10 32 bit (my old computer), the other Windows 10 64 bit.  Progress in moving over to the 64 bit environment has been pretty good except for one feature: neither computer's TMG will backup my project.  (I should add that my TMG7.04 project still backs up fine).     In each case the backup process ends with the error message 'OLE exception error: code 00000fd. OLE object may be corrupt'.  I have assumed that is is referring to the data being held by TMG and have been reviewing it.  Looking in the Exhibit Log under All exhibits, type: OLE shows none present.  I have checked the exhibits under Videos and all appear to be functioning correctly. I have also entered exhibits under the Insert New Exhibit (Other) command, so I have checked these.  I did discover that some had file names far too long as I had altered them not realising that they were the same files that were attached as exhibits.  These have now all been shortened considerably.  All these are mp4 exhibits and all run satisfactorily and show no signs of being corrupted.   All other exhibits are images and a few pdf text files.  Again as far as I can tell none appear to be corrupt and tests indicate no exhibits are missing.     I am working with only a small part of my complete project for a cousin and the problem seems to lie in it as the sample database that comes with TMG backs up properly.     As someone who makes regular and frequent backups I feel uncomfortable not being able to do this.  Does anyone have any thoughts on what might be wrong? With thanks and Happy New Year to all Nick Shelley

I had never used the place index before, and I checked Terry's article which was (of course) very useful. I have one question, though. I have many places where I control the output levels for reports with exclusion markers in the place fields. This seems to give me multiple map icons for basically the same place, even if I specify the map link to be the full place. For instance: the following gives me 1 place (all three have [HID:][GEO-PLACE:]Salcombe,, County Devon, England[:GEO-PLACE][:HID] in the Temple Field), but three icons, one for each listing Salcombe,,County Devon, England Salcombe,,-County Devon, England Salcombe,,-County Devon, -England Am I overlooking something, or is this intentional?
