It should only appear when the individual is the focus person (e.g., not as a child). As to where it appear in that section depends on the Tag Group in which you create the Tag. If you create the Tag in the Death Tag Group, then the resulting sentence will in the first (Birth, Marriage, Death, Burial) paragraph. But if you create the Tag in the Other Tag Group, the obit will be in the second paragraph along with all other Tags. The Sort Date will dictate where within the paragraph it is placed. >I have hundreds of obit information in the "memo" of the death tag. > >I would like to keep the obit as written. That would take a >tremendous amount of time. Keeping the obit in the Death Tag and editing the report EVERY time that you print the report is senseless. Using a Custom Obit Tag is a lot easier. It is still a lot of work, but you only do it once. The work is basically a three-step job for each Death Tag with obit info. 1. Open the Death Tag, highlight and copy the content of the Memo field, and close the Tag. 2. Add the Obit Tag, paste the copied obit in the Memo field, make other changes (Date/Sort Date, place), and save the Obit Tag. 3. Re-open the Death Tag, delete the obit from the Memo field, make other changes as desired, and save the Death Tag. You could delete the obit from the Death Tag in step 1, but if something happens before you finish step 2, then ..... So, it is just how confident you are that nothing will happen. <g> In any case, the copy/paste/delete process goes fairly quickly for each instance. Probably a lot less than a minute -- especially after the first couple times. Lee

That would take a tremendous amount of time. > Lyle, I agree with those that say you would be better off putting the obits in a separate Tag Type so you can better control it. But you do have some options for how the data in Tags is presented that do not require you to move them to separate Tags. Look at the Tags tab of the Report Options for the Journal and you can see how it works. The left side of that tab controls which Tag Types appear for everyone in their own section of the report. There are separate options on the right for the listing of children when they appear under their parents. Children who have children of their own, and thus appear in their own sections are treated differently than children who do not have their own sections. The top option "Applies to" controls whether abbreviated listings (more on that next) are used only for children with their own section, or for all children. If you set it to "Only children that are carried forward" only those children will get the abbreviated listing. Children who do not have their own section will get all the Tags specified on the left side of the tab. If you chose "All children" all the children, regardless of whether or not they also appear in their own sections will have only the abbreviated listing. What Tag Types are included for children who receive the abbreviated listing? That's controlled by the middle section on the right, "Include Only." You can choose any or all, or none, of the Tag Types Birth, Marriage and Divorce, Death, and Burial. The third set of options -- "Format" -- in that group controls how the information in the Tag Types you specified will be displayed. There are three choices. The first, "He was born in 1861,"  uses the Sentences to produce the output - that is they get the same output, but only for these four Tag Types, as will appear in their own section. That's the issue you are having because you put the obit information in the Death Tag. The second two options -- "born 1861" and "b. 1861" -- do not use Sentences but use abbreviated output from the date and place fields. The Memo will not be included. So, one option is to choose one of these last two options. When you do the obit will not appear with the child in the list of children for his or her parents. If you do move the obit text to it's own Tag Type it will appear only if you specify that it be include on the left side of the Tags tab of Report Options, and only in a person's own section. Exception - for children who do not have their own section it will appear under their parents if you choose "Only children who are carried forward." Terry Reigel

    3. John Cardinal, you have provided wonderful help -- a thank you seems so inadequate, but thank you nevertheless. The problem seems to be partially fixed, but not fully.  After using the repaired files you sent, I went through the following sequence: 1. made the limited site in SS -- 15 Role not found errors, which were all for the custom tags Image and Court (ie, those for the standard tags Baptism and Engagement did not recur); 2. made an SS site of all people in my project -- 102 (the maximum) Role not found errors, all for Baptism, Engagement, Court and Image tag types; 3. went through the Baptism and Engagement tag types in TMG and successfully added the dummy sentences to each role; 4. went through the Court and Image tag types in TMG and tried unsuccessfully to add the dummy sentences to each role -- as before, they disappeared as soon as I exited the Roles and Sentences tab, although they remain in the Sentence and Witness Sentence fields of the previous screen; 5. repeated step 1 -- same result as above; 6. repeated step 2 -- only 58 Role not found errors, all for the custom Court and Image tag types (ie, the Baptism and Engagement errors did not recur). All this suggests that John successfully identified the problem for the standard Baptism and Engagement tag types, but may not have fixed (or tried to fix) the custom Court and Image tag types.  Is there anything you can do with that, John?  Can you work with the file I sent you or should I send another similar? Questions that occur to me are: * did the corruptions in the tag type entries arise from something I did? or was it just another unsolved computer mystery? * any idea how/why it arose in 4 tag types and no others? * is there anything I can do to prevent the problem recurring in the future? 3. Thanks for your prompt replies. Do I understand that the "obit tag" will only appear once in the journal report. If so when does it appear, the first time the person's name appears or the second time? I have hundreds of obit information in the "memo" of the death tag. I would like to keep the obit as written. Some of the obits are very interesting and helpful in understanding more about the person. The only way I thought possible was to save as a Word document and then remove the unwanted memo in the death tag. That would take a tremendous amount of time. Looking forward to your reply. As Judy suggests, you can create a Custom OBIT Tag just for the obit text. Adjust the Sentences as desired. It could be just "[M]" (no quotes) or something like "[PP] obit, published [D]< in [DETAIL]>, read as follows: [M]" (no quotes). Or you could just use the ANECDOTE or NOTE Tag. In the latter case, you may wish to adjust the Sentence as desired. I seldom include obits in my Tags unless they are somewhat unique in the way they are written and/or give a lot of information not available elsewhere. Instead, I just enter them as Sources and occasionally quote small excerpts from them in a Tag. In some cases -- again mostly when they are unique or quite long , I will enter them as text Exhibits usually just attaching the Exhibit to the Source. This allows me to have the obit text handy for future reference. Lee

    3. Lindsay , Why not create 2 new tag types, say Court2 and Image2? Recreate all the sentences you have previously defined for these tags. Then use TMG Utilities to change all instances of Court and Image to the new tag types. When all is done, delete the original tag types and then rename the new ones back to their original names. Especially if you do not have too many sentences defined for these 2 tag types, it might be worth the trouble. 2. John Cardinal
    3. Lindsay, For some reason, I skipped over the "Court" and "Image" tag types when reading the message you sent me, so I didn't know they were broken and I didn't fix them. If I repair the files you already sent me, you'll lose whatever you have done since then, like adding roles that were missing or had empty sentences. Given you don't care about the actual content of the sentence templates, you can use the approach Marc suggested: - In TMG, Make a backup of your project. - In TMG, create new event types "Court2" and "Image2". Make sure you define all the existing roles in both of the new tag types. - In TMG Utility, change the event types for "Court" to "Court2" and "Image" to "Image2". - In TMG, delete the "Court" and "Image" tag types. - In TMG, rename "Court2" to "Court", and "Image2" to "Image". 3. Lindsay, As we discussed off-list, I suspected that your TMG project had some corrupted Tag Type entries. After inspecting your project, I can confirm that is the case. Without going into too much detail, the "L=ENGLISH" section for the Baptism and Engagement Tag Types was not constructed properly. Each Tag Type has entries for multiple languages. For those two Tag Types, some of the contents of the L=ENGLISH section are there, but the header for the section is not. I cannot determine how the entries got broken. I vaguely recall some bugs related to the role/sentence storage in TMG projects, but I don't remember the details. I have fixed the entries and I will send you back a repaired SQZ file in the next few minutes. That will be off-list, of course. John

    3. Thanks for your advice, John and Don, but no joy, I'm afraid.  I had already checked languages and I've just double checked -- for all relevant tags, the Language in the Tag Type Definition screen/Roles and Sentences tab is English (US).  I don't recall ever having used a language other than English (US) in TMG or SS. I've checked carefully the TMG Help topic for Tag Type Definition, learnt a few things but didn't find any solutions. To recap and add some data, my problem is that: * for a few tag types (standard tags Baptism & Engagement, custom tags Court and Image) and no others, there are no sentences assigned to the various roles listed in the Tag Type Definition screen/Roles and Sentences tab; * when I add sentences to some or all of the roles listed in the Roles and Sentences tab, the sentences appear (and remain) in the Sentence and Witness Sentence fields in the preceding Tag Type List screen; * but when I return to the Roles and Sentences tab, the sentences just added have disappeared for all roles; * frequent Optimise and VFI do not seem to help; * for these 4 tag types (and no others), I get Role not found errors when making a SS site. There must be an explanation, but I've spent all day looking, to no avail.  Any ideas, anyone? Lindsay On 21/1/18 11:35, Don Ferguson wrote: > I think John's on the right track. 3. Helen, One option for your photos would be to use a batch process to create resized versions. Photoshop will of course do this, but so will Irfanview, which is free. You set up the desired parameters, tell it which folder you want done, and voila, you've got a set of appropriately sized images. The main thing is just to be sure you're not replacing your originals, but creating new versions. 3. Thank, John -- I had tried Optimise and VFI many times before I sent my email, but I'll try that again. I've gone too far down the 'no sentences' path to ever back track.  Given that I never use narrative reports in TMG (or a narrative style in SS), I'm reluctant to construct 'real' sentences when I don't know what I'm doing <g>.  But I'll do as you've suggested just in case TMG expects 'real' sentences with variables in them. I will also check the behaviour of other tag types (ones which have not caused role not found errors in SS) to see whether their role sentences disappear or not. Will report back later today. 3. Hi Brian, I am aware of the problem of using these substitution variables with non-standard Place Styles. Essentially, this problem is that [Lx] should be defined for each Place Style as a template to identify what [Lx] means for that Place Style. This means that there is an effectively 1:1 mapping for the US Standard Place Style e.g. [L2] --> [DETAILS] but for another place style [L2] --> [ADDRESSEE], [DETAILS]. It should be thought of as [Level 2] not [L2]. This is the approach that HRE is taking to resolve this problem. The same problem can occur for non-standard Person Name Styles. 3. Using TMG 9.05 and Second Site 6.3 under Windows 10.  To avoid the 'Role not found' errors in SS, I need to make sure there are sentences for the Principal and each Role in all tag types. As I do not otherwise use sentences in TMG or SS, the sentence I've added is "Dummy sentence to avoid SS Role not found error".  But the problem is how to add that sentence and make it stick. There are 6 relevant tag types, 4 custom and 2 standard.  Using the Master Tag Type list, I added the dummy sentence to each role (under the Roles and Sentences tab) for each of the 6 tag types. For 2 of the custom tags, the dummy sentences remained as entered for each role and also remained in the Sentence and Witness Sentence boxes on the first screen of the Tag Type List -- and, for those 2 tag types, the Role not found error did not occur in SS. But for the other 4 tag types, when I added the dummy sentence to each role and OK'd that screen, the dummy sentence appeared in the Sentence and Witness Sentence boxes.  But when I clicked on Edit again, the dummy sentences had disappeared for all roles.  And, predictably, the Role not found error occurred in SS. I hope this all makes sense.  Why do the dummy sentences disappear and how do I make them stick?  I know there's a SS involvement, but it seems to be a TMG question and I hope someone can follow this through and help me understand what's happening. I always enter descriptors (County, Parish, whatever) in the place entry. My reasons are: 1. I want to make sure that the reader understands that the county is the county. This is not so much a problem in many other countries; but, in the US, many cities have same name as a county in the same state and sometimes the city is located in the same county and sometimes not. 2. Whether for the US of other countries, I can enter the descriptor after, before, or (in some cases) not at all as that is the norm for that country. So, if the county is output in any way (list or narrative report or GEDCOM or other export), the reader will never be confused. Lee

    3. All, The location variables [L4], [LCN] and [COUNTY] all provide whatever's in the [L4] variable (that might not be a "county," depending on whatever place style has been used. Is there any advantage to using one or the other of these variables? In other words "John lived in [L3]." vs "John lived in [LCI]." or "John lived in [CITY]." This all came up after I messed with some place styles and replaced the "County" label with "Parish". I realized that the variables [LCI] or [COUNTY] were a little confusing if what was in [L4] was actually a Parish. Would anyone like to share their own practices? Thanks, Brian
