No, there is no merge function for Tag Types. But, you can use John Cardinal's TMG Utility to change Tag Type "A" to Tag Type "B". So if you have two Tag Types named Resided and Residence that are both essentially the same, select the one to "keep" and use the Utility program's Events=>Change Event Type function to change the Resided Tag Type to the Residence Tag Type (or whatever). You can also change Roles with the same function. if needed. Be sure to make a backup first. Also use the Log Only feature the first time that you run the function. This way, you can review the log report to see if it is what you want. Then de-select the Log Only option and run the function again "for real". Lee
Hi Jim, First, not sure what you mean by "duplicate" tag types? Do you mean duplicate names? If a Project has multiple Datasets, each Dataset can have its own collection of tag types. You can see this at the top of the Master Tag Type List where you select the Dataset in order to show its separate list of types. But when a Dataset is merged into an existing Dataset, if the receiving Dataset has a tag type of the same name, the global customization to that tag type in the sending Dataset is lost. So you would wind up with only one tag type of that name in the receiving Dataset with the receiving Dataset's sentence. So I would be surprised if you had duplicate tag type "names" in a single Dataset. Next, if you have tag types which have the same global sentence but different names, you might first try to delete one of these tag types from the Master Tag Type List whose "name" you don't wish to keep. If any person has that tag type TMG will warn you so you would not want to delete it. But with no one assigned that tag type there is no harm in deleting that undesired and unused type. (Note that you cannot delete Standard pre-defined tag types no matter what.) Once you have deleted unused tag types be sure to do the TMG maintenance routines. Now you can pick one of the types with the same sentence but different names as what you want all of these similar types to be named. Then you can change all instances of event tag type "a" to event tag type "b" using the TMG Utility. For details of how to do that, see the function "Change Event Type" in the TMG Utility's Help. Hope this helps in your clean up,
When I attempt to create a GEDCOM file from a focus group I eventually get the following error: "File 'curselection.dbf' does not exist 21EXPORT" The export stalls on "Step 4: Finish," is about 4% complete and on the "Person dictionary". I've tried reinstalling but get the same error. Thank you for your help.
In the Master Tag Type List, I have several instances of duplicate, or very similar named tags with exact same sentence. Most of these likely occurred from merging datasets. Is there any way to merge or combine the duplicate type Tags with same sentence? using using TMGv9.05 ~ Win10/64. If I cannot merge, what is best way to clean up the Master Tag List ? I'm currently struggling with TMG v9.05 (UK edition). I am trying to add people, using the Add Person button on the toolbar, which is supposed to allow me to add a parent, sibling, spouse or child of the currently selected person. When I try to do this, it appears to have worked correctly, but adds the person with ID 0:0 instead of what it should have been. Has anyone seen anything like this before? How can I convert the people with ID 0:0 to proper people who are properly linked to their relations? How can I prevent this happening again? Thanks - Rowan
Rootsweb is now using a different web tool, HyperKitty, to display the TMG archives. Searching the web shows that HyperKitty is a new software package. In my opinion it is less complete and less friendly than the old RootsWeb archives package. It also seems to have a BUG. Depending upon how you "reply" to a post that reply will display one of three different ways when you view the archives on the web. I have not (yet) figured out what triggers each different display action. 1- The reply will show as a reply to the original post as expected. 2- The reply will produce a completely new thread/post and not be associated with the original post even though the Subject line is the same. 3- The reply will be accepted, and like all other replies will be included in the emails sent out, but by default WILL NOT SHOW among the replies to that thread. WORKAROUND When you view a particular thread/topic, by default you will see the original post followed by "some" replies sorted by thread. Between the original post and the first reply is the clickable text to instead "Show replies by date". ALWAYS CLICK ON THIS!! Only by displaying replies sorted by date will you see ALL replies. For some reason the display of replies sorted by thread may HIDE some replies but will still show others. Unfortunately neither I nor our List Administrator can find any option to change the default for the display to sort by date. Nor is there an option to separately list all posts in a chronological list, whether a new thread or a reply, like the old archives provided. At least that always used to let you know there was a new reply. The List Administrators, and RootsWeb, are aware of these issues. Hopefully there will be improvements over time in this new web archives software.

Terry is correct. This is a remaining bug in the final version of TMG. Details of the bug and its workaround can be found in my List of Outstanding bugs here: https://www.mjh-nm.net/BUGS.HTML#B38

It's caused, as I recall, but having both citations turned on and sending Memos to footnote or endnote. Turning off the latter should fix it, but then you have to figure out what to do with the text from the Memo. I think the best solution for that is to put the [M] variable in the Sentences, but that may not work for your situation. Terry Reigel
All fixed, what I found. Although the details on the trouble report for 9.5 version that opened as an expired Trial version looked like only the user name was missing it turns out that the serial number had one digit wrong as well. After further digging I found a trouble report for 9.3 that had my full name and the correct serial number. Once entered the program has opened as it should and now the 'about the master genealogist' details show everything as correct again. Phew! Hope this information helps someone else one day. Cheers, David Cavanagh.
An update to my issue of 9.5 expired trial version. When I look at the data in 'About The Master Genealogist" under help, I find my email address, serial number, but not my name? the filed that has the purchased by data only lists my computer name. The activation screen asks for my name, and fails if I enter my name, and also fails if I enter my computer name as it is only in one field. It seems that the file that held my name has moved or been deleted and now only the root of that file remains, if this makes any sense. Cheers David Cavanagh

Presuming you are outputting to a word-processor file, it may be that the format used for the end-note references is controlled by options in the word-processor. In Word 2016, that would be on References, the "expand arrow" in the Footnotes section pops up a window with options for number style. -- [email protected] Dennis Lee Bieber HTTP://home.earthlink.net/~bieber.genealogy/
Thanks Dennis, I think I have the folder figured out. Now I have the end notes being signaled by Roman numerals. That is, if I have notes about my name, I have "Brian Cole" followed by Roman numerals in superscript. So again, I have TMG v. 9.05 and I am using Windows 10. I have looked at the options three times and I don't see a place to choose or not choose that. Brian Cole
Hi...something weird is happening, I can't add tags to one individual in my project, but can to others. What can I do to fix this? I was trying to enter info for the 1940 census and other info contained therein. Marie A. Owen
John- My TMG version is 8.08.It didn't always do this but has been for some time off and on. I have taken the steps you mentioned and it's okay for a while but invariably happens again. In my particular case, it's when I'm entering the source and when it freezes and I go back in, it seems to be converting to Witness which shows up as the first thing in Name/Place. Hope that makes sense. Thank you, John, I've done both but will again. Note: that looks like a corrupt entry -- the closest I find in my installation is: C:\Users\Wulfraed\Documents\The Master Genealogist v9\Report_output You seem to be missing the \Report portion of the path. I'd suggest checking all preferences (general and project) for any path entries and ensuring they are correct: Program Options/General Default Project Path Current Project Options/Advanced <check all eight path entries> And on the report definition screen, make sure the save-to filename has a valid path. -- [email protected] Dennis Lee Bieber HTTP://home.earthlink.net/~bieber.genealogy/
