    3. I just did a simple filter for the Project Explorer--"Is a Descendant" of ID# 14999, a relative born in 1850 who had grandchildren by at least four of her children, and was startled to get only 22 results. I might have believed this, but a fellow researcher should have been on the list, and wasn't, and I soon ascertained that two of her siblings were while she and two others were not. The two who did show, had no birth dates and showed up twice each on the list, while the three who didn't show did have birth dates. Also, no one else on the list was alive or lacking a birthdate. Any ideas what's going on here? I'm not seeing any pattern I can understand. Karla Huebner calypsospots AT gmail.com

I assume you are referring to the following 1850 census record: M432, film 1, Benton County, Stamped page 372, Household 605, page 743 line 51 thru page 744 line 11. > I started off using James Moody as the head of household which he is not > and recording Permelia as his wife. She doesn’t become his wife until 1855. As Terry noted, that is not what the census says, so don't do that. > I realized I need to set up a Tag to record the Moody family in 1850. Well yes, a Moody census tag would help, sort of. What you *really* need to do is enter the Moody family individuals in your Project. Then you can create an 1850 census tag of this family with their information as shown in the census: Presumed parents: B. E. Moody, b. North Carolina, age 40 Martha Moody, b. South Carolina, age 40 and presumed children all born in Alabama: Jas M, 20; Nancy, 16; Mary, 14; John, 12; Thomas, 10; Margaret, 8; Millie, 6; Riley, 6; Caroline, 1,; Windford, 4 and presumed grandparent: Benj E Moody, b. North Carolina, 60 Once Jas M is an individual in entered your Project you can add a marriage between him and Permelia Anne. But she would not be a Witness to the above 1850 Census tag as she is not in that household. Note that the above Benjamin Epps Moody and Martha Elizabeth Cadwell are enumerated as head and wife with various children in the 1860, 1870, and 1880 census in St. Clair county, Alabama. > To further muddy the water I find two families sharing a dwelling but they > are shown with separate real estate values. There are many reasonable explanations for this. The first that comes to mind is a duplex, or two homes built on the same lot. Regardless, your source citation needs to simply list what that source reported. I see no need to mention the other family, as the Census clearly enumerated the Moody family as a separate family. > I’m thinking of recording B. E. as the head of household. With he and the > 40 year old woman as husband and wife and make them principals. I agree with Terry that this is what you should do as this is what that source shows, along with linking their presumed children and presumed grandparent as Witnesses to that 1850 Census tag. > How should I record the children and Benj. E. Moody? As I mention above. First add these people as individuals in the Project. Then link them to the Census tag with their appropriate role. > I have sent a second message showing this mixed up family. I don't see anything mixed up about this family. Just record what the source records show. As for the James Marion Moody with a spouse Permelia Anne Youngblood, there is a Pedigree Resource File for Permelia: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/2:2:387X-SVN with sources cited. They are likely the family in the 1860 Census: M653, film 1296, Texas, Guadalupe county, page 26, dwelling 197, family 161, lines 2-7 Jas M Moody, 30, b. Alabama P A ---, 23, b. South Carolina Tho. N. ---, 3, b. Texas Amanda R ---, 1, b. Texas John M. Moody, 22, b. Alabama Nancy C. Browning, 1, b. Texas A James Marion Moody b. 22 Apr 1830 in Calhoun County, Alabama died 25 Jan 1863 in Fairground Hospital Number 1. Atlanta GA as a Civil War casualty of Company C, 51st Alabama https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/41178759 If this is the same James, his death would explain why Permelia Anne remarried in 1867. Presume John M. Moody in the above 1860 census is James' brother as there is a sibling John of that age in the 1850 census. Possibly he is the John Monroe Moody b. 14 Dec 1837, d. 27 Jul 1926 also in Company C, Alabama https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/36360452 Hope this gives you ideas, Michael

So I don't know why you would want to do that. > To further muddy the water I find two families sharing a dwelling but they > are shown with separate real estate values. Are you still talking about the census tag, or are you talking about how to enter them in TMG at all? If the former, enter them as you would any children. If the latter, I would enter each of them, and in the Parent/Child Relationship Tag I would cite the census, and enter in the CD "shows them apparently living as parent and child" and give it a surety of 1. Then I'd look for other evidence to prove they really were the children of B. E. and Martha. Terry Reigel

    3. As several of you have detected I am confused. I’m taking another run at these families and hope to get hem straightened out. Your help is appreciated and I hope you will continue to help. My ggmother, Permelia Anne Youngblood has been in my database for a long time. She married William S. Dreaden in 1867. I recently became aware of an earlier marriage, in 1855, between Permelia Anne and James Marion Moody. I have been trying to record the information from the 1850 Federal Census in my database. I started off using James Moody as the head of household which he is not and recording Permelia as his wife. She doesn’t become his wife until 1855. I realized I need to set up a Tag to record the Moody family in 1850. The Census is silent on whom or if people are married. To further muddy the water I find two families sharing a dwelling but they are shown with separate real estate values. The first family list is Adam. I have no idea who they are or why they are sharing a house and see no reason for me to be interested in them, The Moody family starts with B. E. Moody and he is followed by a female and they are both are 40 years old.. I presume they are husband and wife but this is not stated. The next Moody is James Marion Moody, age 20. I presume he is a son of B. E. There are quite a few children, or what I assume to be children and the last entry is Benj. E. Moody, age 60. I’m guessing he is the father of B. E. I’m thinking of recording B. E. as the head of household. With he and the 40 year old woman as husband and wife and make them principals. How should I record the children and Benj. E. Moody? Any other suggestions will be appreciated. Bob Black I have sent a second message showing this mixed up family. Bob

    3. On 1/8/19, Bob Black asked: > I have a 1850 census tag set up according, I believe, > with Terry's method. Hi Bob, As others have mentioned, your terminology is confusing and not what is used by TMG. In Terry's tags the husband and wife are entered as "Principals" to the tag. The other enumerated members of the household are all entered as "Witnesses". However, the Principals may be linked using special "Roles" depending upon the number of children. And the children and other members of the household may themselves be linked using other appropriate "Roles". As Terry replied, it seems you did all this right. But using the appropriate TMG terminology in your post will help us other users better figure out what you are trying to do. > The only problem is that the witnesses do not appear on the screen > showing the family view. Again, it is not clear what "screen" you mean or what "view" you mean. In TMG the Details subwindow of the screen can show three "Views" of the Subject person: "Person", "Family", or "Tree". If you click on the "View" button at the top of the TMG window you are able to change to any of these three "Views" in the Details subwindow. As Terry noted the "Family View" only shows the Subject, (one of) their Spouse, and the parents of the Subject and Spouse. No one else in this subwindow. But you can include other subwindows in your screen Layout, such as the Children subwindow Terry mentioned. So it is not clear what you wish to see on what "screen". Obviously if you open the Census tag it will list the Witnesses on the screen. Perhaps you wish to see the Census tag in the Details subwindow list of tags when one of the Witnesses is the Subject of the screen? If so, in Preferences // Program Options // Tag Box // you must select the check box to "Show witnessed events". Richard guessed that you might be wanting somehow to see these witnesses when one of the Principals is the Subject of the screen? He and Terry mentioned the Associates subwindow which can be added to your Layout and will show all individuals (principals and other witnesses) associated in every event tag with the person who is the Subject. By right-clicking in that subwindow you even can sort and filter that list of individuals. Could you give us a better idea of what you wish to see?

An alternate way to enter censuses, is to give each person their own census tag, and add the parents as witnesses to the children (and the children as witnesses to the parents). This causes you to see all the children that are part of the census right with the census. (You don't have the witness roles generate sentences with this method, just the principals, listing the witnesses in their sentences). -- Richard Damon

In the Family View? Children don't appear in the "Family View," and haven't since TMG4. In TMG 5 and later it shows the subject person, his or her spouse, and the parents of each. To see the children you have to have the Children window open. In any case, entering children in a Census tag, or any other Event tag, doesn't tell TMG that they were children of the parents. Only Parent/Child Relationship tags to that. If you want to see who is entered as Witnesses in tags you need to open the Associates window. That does show everyone entered in any Tag. Terry Reigel

    3. What do you mean by citation? Principal? I use Terry’s method and I don’t input the other members of the household with a witness role. If they are children, I use his “with parents,” “with father,” “with mother,” etc. Forgive me, but it doesn’t look to me like Family View is intended to show that kind of detail. I see the above roles in each person’s person view, however. Am I misunderstanding your question?
