    1. [TMG] Problem When Re-Indexing -- Project Closes and Cannot Re-Open
    2. Fred Claussen
    3. Hi Everyone: I have been a major TMG user since version 5.0 and have only recently had the following problem.  This happened once a few months ago and I successfully restored from my prior BU and only lost a couple of hours work.  I considered it a "one off" but it has just happened again so I am hoping that someone can tell me what I might be doing wrong or how I can avoid the problem in the future. Running TMG 9.05 under Windows 7 Home Premium Sequence of events: Time for dinner so I started into my BU/Close process: Optimize and then Re-Index then run VFI then BU then Close Optimize completes as normal. Re-Index does not complete (does not even start?) with a message "Project is in use elsewhere." TMG then closes (without my asking it to do so as I remember it). Re-open TMG and get the statement that Repair Mode has been Activated. Attempt to re-open my main project (the one that closed while attempting to re-index) and get the following message: As I remember it this is the same sequence of events and the same messages when I went through this the first time a few months ago. I do not know what (if anything) I am doing wrong but I need to take all steps necessary to avoid this in the future.   Thoughts or suggestions? Thanks, Fred Claussen

Is there an easy way to do this? Hi Derek, I discuss this in some detail in the "Import/Export" chapter of my on-line TMG book. What actions to take depend upon what all you do or do not wish to keep. I suggest you scroll down in that chapter to the heading "Project Files with Customizations" and compare the two sets of actions and their results under the subheadings "Retain Sources and Repositories" and "No Sources or Repositories, but retain the Source Types". That chapter also begins by discussing separately exporting source types and tag types and importing them into a new project created with the basic defaults. See the chapter here: https://www.mjh-nm.net/IMEXPORT.HTML Hope this gives you some ideas, Michael

    3. I uploaded two very small family trees to link to Ancestry DNA tests. These trees were created by uploading GEDCOMs. Because I have a personal family history web site using Second Site and highly customized TMG sentences, and because Ancestry does not handle sources, I wanted it to be very "bare bones," with a pointer to my personal web site. I used a tip from Terry Riegel, and added a "custom tag" to point readers to my personal site. You can see my output at https://www.ancestry.com/family-tree/tree/24587406/family and also at https://www.ancestry.com/family-tree/tree/150930350/family Regards, Cheryl Freeman On 1/15/2019 6:16 AM, Sydney via TMG wrote: > Hi Listers > > I've had my results from Ancestry DNA for some time but never bothered to upload a family tree- making it hard to connect with anyone. Is there anyone on the TMG list that would be willing to point me to a family tree they have uploaded to Ancestry from a TMG gedcom? Terry has some great info on his tips page that is really going to help but I was hoping to see an actual example generated from a TMG GEDCOM. I want to upload a very limited amount of info and it would be very helpful if someone that's done this would point me to their family tree. I have already used a flag to generate people to include- so that part isn't an issue. > > Thanks, > Sydney > > Sent with [ProtonMail](https://protonmail.com) Secure Email. >

    3. I uploaded 10,000 people in august 2018, hotchkin 8-11-18, am still adding pictures and going through adding Citations. Their Hint system has much improved ancestry results and accuracy. Their computer selection is finding Citations that I never could have found; but you do have to check every one as mistakes are made. 3. I uploaded a direct-line, non-sourced tree with limited info when I did the DNA, so I'd have something for people to look at. It has brought me many "cousins" and Shared Ancestor Hints. Quite useful. I started the tree with me, and I am the only living person on it. https://www.ancestry.com/family-tree/tree/47608383/family/familyview - Sally Houston On Tue, Jan 15, 2019 at 6:17 AM Sydney via TMG <tmg@rootsweb.com> wrote: > Hi Listers > > I've had my results from Ancestry DNA for some time but never bothered to > upload a family tree- making it hard to connect with anyone. 3. Hi Terry & also Alan Thanks- very helpful. I think I need to do a more limited tree then I first thought and will concentrate just on the DNA tree. I agree about not worrying about DNA possible matches that don't have trees posted, which is why I wanted to upload a small amount even though I basically distrust Ancestry and all the bogus "research" that's generated there. Hey- I did see where your notice, discussed in your Tips, shows up in the profile view Terry! Syndey, The Ancestry I have attached to my DNA results is at: https://www.ancestry.com/family-tree/tree/150721759/family I don't recall that I uploaded it. I suspect I entered it manually since there are no sources and only birth and death info included. The tree I did upload is at: https://www.ancestry.com/family-tree/tree/47110828/family I uploaded this nearly 5 years ago in hopes of making some contacts with other researchers. So far I haven't received a single inquiry, so I'm not rushing to upload more. The DNA tree on the other had I think is useful, at least I use them when I follow up on matches. For me at least, I generally don't try to contact matches that don't post a tree because I assume the owners have no actual interest or knowledge about their family history. Terry Reigel

I can get what I want, at least sometimes, by toggling the More <-> Less button, found at the bottom of the list of options on the right in the Source List. Can you try doing that and see if it helps? 1. [TMG] Master Source List - strange behavior

    3. using TMG9.05, Win 10, 6 mb RAM Master Source list set to sort by Abbreviations Today, when I started to cite a source and press F2 to search, the list comes up with Titles showing, rather than Abbreviations, although the List shows it is set to sort by Abbreviations. This has happened several times, so I ran Maintenance>Re-index, Optimize, & VFI, each several times with no corrections. What has happened? and how can I make it sort correctly by Abbreviations? I have been using TMG since 1996 and this is a first for this. All by source abbrev are named so I can quickly find the one I want. Titles are no help.
