Hi Gail- The island you are talking about might be Minorca, which lies off the Mediterranean coast of Spain. I have been there. It, and a near-by larger island, Majorca, have long been owned by Spain, but have a population derived from many other Mediterranean peoples, including Phoenicians, Moors (North African Semitic), Greeks, Romans, and both Northern and Southern Europeans. So, its culture and heritage are not just Spanish. The people do tend to be very dark.It was the HQ of both the British and the American Mediterranean Fleets during the 18th and 19th Centuries, as well as the birth-place of the father of our (Yankee) Admiral Farragut.
