    1. [THRELKELD] Threlkeld Mailing List, and All RootsWeb Lists, Closing Permanently
    2. Ed Williams
    3. Dear Threlkeld Mailing List Members: The RootsWeb mailing lists--a communication staple for many years in the genealogy community--came back online in Q1 2018, after the acquisition by Ancestry.com had temporarily suspended them. As we know, much of the rest of RootsWeb never did come back online. The list administrators received word about two hours ago that the RootsWeb lists will be closing permanently as of 2 March 2020. Incoming and outgoing email services will cease, administrator log-in accounts will be discontinued, and the lists will be put "into an archival state." Existing messages are to remain searchable via RootsWeb, at least for the immediate future. There have been valuable information exchanges on these lists over the years, some of it irreplaceable from family researchers now deceased. Our list hasn't been exactly active, but I'm still saddened to see it go. Any communication venue related to one-name studies is a good thing. I know the current mailing list software will wreak havoc on the links that are to follow, but I need to provide them to you. Home base for the Threlkeld One-Name Study is https://casestone.com/threlkeld/, though attempting to operate a mailing list from there is, I'm afraid, out of scope. The Threlkeld message board at Ancestry.com is at https://www.ancestry.com/boards/surnames.threlkeld/mb.ashx. For the one-name study, we use WikiTree as the genealogical information of record. The study can be found there at https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Threlkeld_Name_Study. WikiTree also operates a lively message board called G2G (genealogist to genealogist) at https://www.wikitree.com/g2g/. Those are all continuing options for communication. You can reach me directly via the Threlkeld website (https://casestone.com/threlkeld/home/contact-us/general-inquiry) or by sending me a private message from WikiTree (https://www.wikitree.com/index.php?title=Special:PrivateMessage&who=1550496 1&ref=16654871). My personal and sincere thanks to you all for being a member of the Threlkeld mailing list, and for your interest in researching this English surname that dates back over 800 years. --Ed Williams

    3. Hi, Larry! If you haven't seen it, you might be interested in a short write-up I did about the etymology of the Threlkeld surname. You can find it at this link: https://casestone.com/threlkeld/threlkeld/etymology-origins There are myriad possible variations on the surname. In the Threlkeld One-Name Study we've separated them into four categories with multiple spellings under each; the category designations show only the three most common spellings in each: Threlkeld/Thrailkill/Threlkel Threlfall/Threlfell/Threfall Thirkell/Thirkettle/Thirkill Threadgill/Threadgold/Treadgold The most closely related etymologically is Threlfall. The latter two categories are often associated with "Threlkeld," but are etymologically distinct and arose in different parts of Britain. Threadgill, in particular, doesn't even share the origins in Old Norse that the first three do. Thrailkill is almost certainly a spelling directly derived from Threlkeld. But your friend in Alaska isn't quite correct about the spelling separation. For example, you'll find over 200 enumerations in the 1850 U.S. Census with the spelling "Thrailkill"; about 30 in 1840; over 20 in 1830; and even one, a William Thrailkill in Wake, North Carolina, in 1790. But in the 1841 census of England, not one appears. There's one in the 1851 census, in Charsfield, Suffolk, but again zero in the 1911 census. It seems most likely that "Thrailkill" arose simply due to a phonetic spelling of "Threlkeld." One thing that might help us determine the association of the two names would be Y-chromosome DNA testing. Unfortunately--while we have a number of folks who have taken the popular autosomal DNA test (like AncestryDNA and 23andMe)--there have been very few male Threlkelds to take the Y-chromosome tests...and only one Thrailkill, and he opted to keep his information private so we've never been able to compare him even with the scarcity of Threlkelds we have. We need more patrilineal Threlkeld DNA testers! The amazing number of variant spellings of "Threlkeld" don't surprise me, though. We have to remember that written literacy wasn't exactly predominant in Britain or the US until the mid- to late-19th century. Immigrants and responders to censuses would typically have given their answers orally, and a transcriber would write down the information to the best of his or her ability. I just returned last June from a brief visit, my second, to the village of Threlkeld, Cumbria, and other stops in the surrounding, and lovely, Lake District. They thought my accent was extremely odd. Even though almost everyplace is more cosmopolitan than ever before, there's still enough idiom and accent to set areas of Cumbria apart. And there are still even some instances where we can hear what the Cumbrian accent of our forefathers probably sounded like. I ran into no one on my recent visit, though, as distinct as this marvelous, one-minute YouTube video from eight years ago: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DqpBwi594Ug A quick listen to that, even though the recording quality isn't very good, and it's easy to understand how a Cumbrian native telling a census taker--or a tax collector or a priest marrying him and his wife or a solicitor writing his will--that his surname was "Threlkeld" gave rise to literally scores of variant spellings. Just as easy to understand how those variant spellings "stick": a son in the family learns to read and write and, there it is, his grandfather's will, with his name plainly written right there: "Moses Heraelkeld" (BTW, that's a real enumeration: 1840, Scott County, Kentucky, Roll 123, Page 64). And it also explains why it's sometimes so difficult for us to locate indexed records for some of our ancestors. :-/ --Ed -----Original Message----- From: Larry Malloy <kodiakmalloy@hotmail.com> Sent: Monday, August 12, 2019 4:41 PM To: Threlkeld surname mailing list, including all variant spellings like Thrailkill, Threlkel, and Thurlkill <threlkeld@rootsweb.com> Cc: Len Schwarz <len.schw@gmail.com> Subject: [THRELKELD] Re: hannah threlkeld 1844-1916 In 1820 George W. 3. In 1820 George W. THRELKELD, my Gr. Gr. Grandfather, was born in at Steelville, Illinois. He was the son of farmer William THRELKELD who had migrated to southern Illinois from Mercer County, Kentucky, and who was married to Polly Short, daughter of Eli Short, War of 1812 veteran!! William THRELKELD was a multi-generational descendant of Christopher THRELKELD who had immigrated from Threlkeld, England (town currently exists in North Umberland) to Virginia, an American Colony, in ~1690, supposedly escaping the Capital-Punishment rath of England’s newest Sovereign King Edward??? George W. THRELKELD married Martiller Jane Crow (b. ~1824 the daughter of Robert Crow (b. 1794 Greenville, Tn. and Elizabeth Brown b. 1795 Abbiville, S.C. both of whom were devoted Mormons Baptized into the LDS Church as early as 1838) In 1846 George and Martiller left their Illinois farm, eventually joined with the LDS’s Mississippi Saints, who’d traveled through southern Illinois on their directed Pilgrimage to meet up with Brigham Young’s caravan at Fort Laramie as it journeyed towards Utah country. Elizabeth Brown’s cousin, John Brown, was the designated leader of the Mississippi Saints, many of whom became eventual members of a selected Vanguard Group directed to initiate an exploratory entrance into the Salt Lake Valley ahead of Brigham Young’s remnant caravan while he rested/camped temporarily disabled/ sick with “mountain sickness” Upon arrival into the Salt Lake Valley, at the current site of Salt Lake City, on July 22, 1847, that Vanguard Group immediately assessed and acted upon the need get their food crops planted. They created a small water reservoir to nourish their cultivated plantings from their stash of crop-seeds. Tragically, Milton THRELKEL, age ~4+ son of George THRELKELD, drowned in that reservoir; his severely distraught mother, Martiller Crow THRELKELD, gave birth shortly thereafter (days?) to a daughter, Harriott ‘Hattie’ THRELKELD. These two events supposedly represent the first death and second birth recorded of white folks in Utah! Both Elizabeth Crow and her daughter Martiller Crow THRELKELD have been recognized as “LDS Pioneer Women” and sculptured friezes of their likenesses are positioned externally on an important building denoting the creation and settlement of Salt Lake City proper!! After establishing farms in Utah, they eventually traveled to Fort Hall, Idaho and journeyed from there on June 20, 1849 over the Sierra-Nevada mountains to the foothills of Greenwood, Calif. where they overwintered. From there they departed for the gold mining settlement of Mormon Bar on the South Fork of the American River in ElDorado County George and Martiller’s second son, James W. THRELKEL, who’d been with Milton when he drowned, ended up being an orchardist, along with another younger brother George L. THRELKEL (supposedly the first white child born on Mormon Island); they developed the earliest orchards in the foothills adjacent to the Middle Fork of the American River in Placer County. James was my Great Grandfather and he lived until 1922. He married Margaret ‘Maggie’ Zantgraf, daughter of German Inmigrant Anton Zantgraf discoverer and developer of a hard rock gold mine on the banks of the Middle Fork of the American River, near the gold mining town of Rattlesnake Bar. We ‘cut final ties’ from the James W. THRELKEL orchard, cattle property which included Mormon Ravine in the late 1990’s; James’s Gr Gr Grandkid’s not attached and thus not interested in the land as their parents were! Although James’s Grandkid-siblings (3 of us) had been domiciled elsewhere for many years and are now in our 70’s (myself in Alaska for ~53 years), it was EXTREMELY difficult departing from that land because of the THRELKELD’s pioneering family history and of course it had been our home during our formative years Incidentally, my genealogical investigations have identified: • NO polygamy in my ancestral line; • NO LDS remaining in my direct line; • NO history with Mt. Meadows massacre In my Alaskan town there lives a lady who’s maiden name was THRAILKILL. She claims the family’s spelling deviations of that surname occurred during the Civil War era, maybe while the descendent families were split, living in both in Kentucky and Illinois?? She further claims her family’s oral history identified that those choosing the Confederacy spelled their name THRAILKILL and those choosing the Union spelled their name THRELKEL; to include identified diverse spellings of both variant names per family preferences!! Well, thank you for going back to England, Hannah. ;-) I'm certain you already have it, but I was working on the Assets & Archives area of the Threlkeld One-Name Study website anyway so added that census record to the Census Records area so you can access it. Now that I know I've identified the correct family, I'll browse around a bit more this week. --Ed -----Original Message----- From: Dr. Keith G. I have found that her full name was Florence Eustacy Threlkeld Bewick and she was born in Illinois. Everything I keep finding going back to IL shows her as non-white so I keep looking. Spelling in researching this surname is hazardous due to a variety of reasons and you may miss something in searching by misspelled historical entries.............which may or may not be "misspelled" according to some of the persons using this surname in research. The line of Stephen shows on Jasper but has 11 children including males Thomas, Willis, Daniel and James. You might do a bit of research on the meaning of "Jasper" and also some possible other names which may have been or not been a substituted name for Jasper. Perhaps Jasper was a short name and used as the common name. Keep on the hunt! Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
