    1. Roll Call
    2. Pam Reid
    3. Hello All, I am glad that someone started this roll call. As the list owner, it is something I used to do regularly, but have let slide for the past year or two. The info presented here by various people will hopefully allow others to find a connection. My THORN line begins in Gloucester County, VA and moves through VA over time through several Martin Thorns. It is probable that the American line began with a William Thorn who arrived in Gloucester, VA from England aboard The Safety (in 1635). He had sons, Martin and William, who showed up in Surry County, VA after William I's will was probabated. It is possible to follow Martin I though Martin II and Martin III, then the line gets lost for awhile. These early Thorns had the annoying habit of naming all of their sons Martin and William and with so few records surviving, it is easy to lose one's way and to not to know whether you are following the correct line. They are, without a doubt, inter-related. I am descended from Theophilus Thorn of Spartanburg District, South Carolina. THEOPHILUS THORNE was born 1774-1784 in (probably) Edgecomb County, North Carolina, and died 1847 in Spartanburg District, SC. He married JENNIE POPE. Theophilus was most probably the son of William Thorn and Mary Taylor. This must be the Theophilus who is mentioned in a abstract of Edgecombe County, NC deed: DB12-206---William THORN, Beady POPE, WInifred ROBERTSON, Theophilus THORN, Martin THORN, Taylor THORN, Mary POPE, and Elizabeth THORN sold a tract of land jointly; the deed was also signed by Hardy POPE Wiley ROBERTSON, and Dempsey POPE, Jan 28, 1806. (NOTE: Theophilus did not sign the deed, indicating that he had already left Edgecombe County, NC. He is found in Spartanburg District, SC in a property transaction in 1804). William THORN, Theophilus' father, was probably the son of another Martin Thorn , one of three that coexisted in Edgecombe County. This Martin left his property to grandson, Martin, who he was probably the oldest of William and Mary's sons. My papers on the early Thorns are in somewhat of a disarray. I haven't worked on them lately but had sorted out what I thought had happened up to Theophilus arriving in Spartanburg District. However, that paper is missing and the copy that was on my computer was wiped out in a crash a few years back. I will try to reconstruct that and post it here later. From Theophilus in South Carolina I am sure that what I have is correct. I am posting below what I have on William Thorn and Mary Taylor's family and on Theophilus Thorn and Jenny Pope's family. I am just posting one generation for each. If any of you connect with any of this, let me know and I will fill you in on what else I have. 1. WILLIAM THORNE was born Bef. 1775 in Virginia, and died Aft. 1800 in Edgecombe County, NC. He married MARY TAYLOR, daughter of WILLIAM TAYLOR and MARY BATTLE. Children of WILLIAM THORNE and MARY TAYLOR are: 2. i. THEOPHILUS THORNE, b. 1774-1784, ?North Carolina; d. 1847, Spartanburg District, SC. ii. WILLIAM THORNE. iii. BEADY THORNE, m. (______) POPE. iv. WINNIFRED THORNE, m. WILIE ROBERTSON. v. MARTIN THORNE. 3. vi. TAYLOR THORNE, b. November 30, 1782. vii. MARY THORNE, m. (______) POPE. 4. viii. ELIZABETH A. THORNE, b. 1785; d. 1880; ----------------------------------------------------------------------- THEOPHILUS2 THORNE (WILLIAM1) was born 1774-1784 in ?North Carolina, and died 1847 in Spartanburg District, SC. He married JENNIE POPE. Notes for THEOPHILUS THORNE: Theophilus was most probably the son of William Thorn and Mary Taylor. This must be the Theophilus who is mentioned in a abstract of Edgecombe County, NC deed: DB12-206---William THORN, Beady POPE, WInifred ROBERTSON, Theophilus THRON, Martin THRON, Taylor THORN, Mary POPE, and Elizabeth THORN sold a tract of land jointly; the deed was also signed by Hardy POPE Wiley ROBERTSON, and Dempsey POPE, Jan 28, 1806. This is most probably land that the eight brothers and sisters inherited from their mother. The two POPE men are probably the husbands of Mary and Beady. These men were most probably brothers of Jennie POPE. We know that Theophilus was in Spartanburg District by the early 1800s. He is mentioned in two land transactions as documented in Spartanburg County/District South Carolina Deed Abstracts Books A-T, 1785-1827. (1)Book P, p. 399-400, Feb. 27,1804--He is a witness to the sale of land from George Poole to David Pope (Jennie's brother?). (2) Book Q,p. 109-110, Dec. 12, 1817---bought land from John McBee. Witnesses were Elizabeth [likely his sister) and her husband, Whitney Hines. More About THEOPHILUS THORNE: Buried: Near present Arrowood Baptist Church Notes for JENNIE POPE: Family legend from some older family members says that Jennie Pope was a recent immigrant from Ireland. I feel it is more likely that Jennie Pope was a member of the Pope Family that was prominent in Edgecombe County, NC in the mid to late 1700s. She is likely related to the POPE men who married Theophilus THORN's sisters. Children of THEOPHILUS THORNE and JENNIE POPE are: 5. i. EDWIN THORNE, b. October 15, 1799, Spartanburg District, SC; d. July 20, 1868, Spartanburg District, SC. 6. ii. FRANCES THORNE, b. June 25, 1807, Spartanburg District , SC; d. June 25, 1843, Henry County, GA. 7. iii. THEOPHILUS THORNE, b. 1810; d. January 04, 1860, Hempstead, Ark. 8. iv. NATHANIEL THORNE, b. March 22, 1811, Spartanburg District , SC; d. May 24, 1885, Forest City, NC. v. MARTHA THORNE, b. Abt. 1812; d. Deceased; m. SYLVESTER C. COLLINS, December 31, 1837. 9. vi. MARY THORNE, b. Abt. 1815; d. 1863. vii. BETSY THORNE, b. Unknown; d. Deceased; m. GEORGE GARNER. viii. JANE THORNE, b. Unknown; d. Deceased; m. JESSI RHODES. ix. INFANT SON THORNE, b. Unknown; d. Deceased. I am descended from Edwin Thorn and Ann Garner Moreland, daughter of James Moreland and Mary Garner. I have a great deal more info on these families if it will help anyone. I do know that sons of Theophilus went to Georgia, Arkansas and North Carolina. I haven't followed these lines, but do have some info on them. Pam Reid
