    3. I agree a lot of Thorne's came to Canada who were loyalists. Please if you think this may be check the loyalist records. They had to make a sworn statement that they were loyal to the Queen and these records are quite useful. Most of these Thorn/Thorne's settled in the Maritimes (Nova Scotia, New Brunswick etc.) My Thorne's (my GGGrandpa is Albert Thorne - on the 1871 & 1881 census records in Guelph Ontario. He is living with his siblings - not his parents and it lists that they were born in the Jersey Isles and they were all barbers. The last time I started researching in Jersey - (I hadn't gone very far) but I did find thorne's that were barbers - just hadn't found the exact connection. Albert's parents are listed as John Thorne & Mary Ann Masters on his marriage record that I found. <<<Elmer, and others, The decendants of william Thorn(e)c.1617 of NY do cover the entire country, actually starting in MA. They migrated slowly from NY to NJ, PA, VA and so on. The PA Thorn(e)'s went to MD, Ohio and WV and elsewhere including Canada. the VA lines went from there to all over the South and South West. I find it interesting that my Thorne and Chew lines both take the paths west but I have yet to find a connection between the two although they wound up in the same towns and counties. Also, when researching the Thorne name be sure to search by both Thorne & Thorn. I have lines where the name gose back and forth, some where siblings pelled it differently. If you have not done so check out this Thorne website: http://thorn.pair.com/ This site has tons of information and a family forum as well. My particular line ws a tough one to connect, but after getting acces to the census records and Philadelphia PA business directories I was able to connect things and dates. (I'm #3274 in the William Thorne line). One interesting thing I found in my research of the Thornes was that in the late 1840,s and early 1850's one family was in Dublin Indiana at the Quaker Church. In the the 1990's my sister joined that very same church. John >>>>>>

    3. John, Thanks for the info. I did find that in my Thorn family some used the "e" and some didn't - yes and even siblings . I have a cousin that still has the Thorn Homestead in Ohio using the "e" on his name. We thought at first that we weren't related. 3. Hi, I figured I would see if anyone has any info on some Thorne families from Philadelphia Pa that could be related to my "Philly" area Thorne's. The fisrt is as follows: Age as listed in 1880 Census Walter R Thorn 45 Painter Susan (??) 35 Housewife Anna R Thorn 17 School Emma R. Thorn 15 School Samuel R Thorn 13 School Walter R. Thorn 9 School This family all of the children were given the middle initial "R" just as in my family around that time. In our family it was for "Rogers" after their grandmother Hannah Inskeep Rogers. None of my known Thorn(e)s had a Walter in that timeframe though. John
