Elaine, Here are my notes on William Thorn below. Most of thje records were provided by the Bull Run Librian Donald Wilson. I have more on his son John and John's son William if you would like them. Et I have used an approximate for year of birth and place of birth as thereare too many questions and too many assumptions already made of William Thorn. Please don't use dates other than those that have references as proof below. Although I do not have his date of birth, I am using an approximated date based on the age of his first known wife Mary Peck. This date only serves as a point of reference showing he was born in the late 1600's. At this time we do not have a positive surname for his second wife SARAH but believe she is SARAH MUSE daughter of JOHN MUSE and ANNE SANFORD . Some have wrongfully listed her as SARAH DENTON which is not correct. There were other WILLIAM THORN/THORNE'S in New York and New England that may have had a wife named SARAH DENTON but not this WILLIAM THORN of Prince William Co Va. Somewhere between 1716 and 1723 WILLIAM THORN married MARY PECK O'REAR/O'REA , widow of JOHN O'REAR/O'REA. John and Mary had three children MARGARET O'REAR/O'REA , DANIEL O'REAR/O'REA and JOHN O'REAR/O'REA. It is also believed by many researchers that WILLIAM THORN and MARY PECK O'REAR had a daughter SUSANNAH or also known as MARY SUSANNAH who married JOHN RENO/RENEAU. I am including Susannah as their child based on other researchers findings and also the close geographical area of the Thorns and the Renos. Susannah , by marriage records and her children's birth information, was in Prince William County Virginia in the years of 1730's where she married John Reno. William Thorn is the only male Thorn that was living there at that time that could have been her father. No other Thorns are found by any records during those years in Prince WIlliam County. 1724 - Tobacco Tenders Tithable List - WILLIAM THORN ,DANIEL O'REAR age 14 and JOHN O'REAR age 11. tithable 16,000 plants. May 20 1725 - WILLIAM THORN was granted 897 acres on Occoquan Run . This was in partnership with Henry Filkin. Both were residents of Stafford Co. THORN was to have 445 acres on Lick Branch. But the grant was cancelled and the whole tract given to WILLIAM THORN with HENRY FILKIN'S consent. {Northern Neck Grants Book A, p. 152, from abstract by Gertrude Gray} HENRY FILKIN was granted land in this area as early as 1714. Other referances show WILLIAM THORN -Northern Neck Grants Book B, 1726-1729 p. 221. (Reel 290). It states the land was regranted to William Thorn. Jun 3 , 1729 - WILLIAM THORN of Stafford Co Va was granted 897 Acres on Occaquan Run & Lick Branch of said Run. This deed for land granted HENRY FILKIN (Book A,folio 152) {Northern Neck Grants, Book B p.221,from abstract by Gertrude Gray} Notes: Refer to JOHN THORN , son , for notes on the sale of this land on Oct 22 1806. 1733- Mary Peck, daughter of Robert Peck. She married first John Orear, and then William Thorn. Donna Sarchet (sarchet@texasonline.net) found a 1733 deed in King George Co., VA where William Thorn and his wife Mary, "relict of John Orea of Prince William County, VA", and Margaret Glasscock (daughter of John Orea and Mary Orea Thorn) and her husband John Glasscock, sell land to Cornelius McCarty. This land is stated in the deed to have been owned by John Orea before his death. In 1708, Robert Peck and his wife Margaret granted a lifetime lease on this same piece of land to John and Mary Orea "of Stafford Co., VA" on behalf of John and Mary's daughter Margaret, who later married John Glasscock. Robert Peck says that this transaction is for "the love, goodwill, and affection which I have and bare towards my loving friend, Margaret Oriar, daughter to John and Mary Oriar". 1735/36 Rent Rolls for Prince William County WILLIAM THORN 897 acres Oct 4 1736 - Will of DANIEL ORIAR of Prince William County and Colony of Virga, being sick in body... Leaves his estate to his son DANIEL ORIAR , and to my other son JOHN ORIAR, cow and calf, mare, pots basins, etc. To my loving wife EASTER/ESTHER all the rest of my estate.... At this time he names his Executors, my wife, my father-in-law WILLIAM THORN (which at that time period probably meant step-father)and my brother JOHN ORIAR. APRIL 25 1737 - A certificate to obtain a probate was granted on DANIEL ORIAR'S estate to HESTER ORIAR, WILLIAM THORN and JOHN ORIAR. Why her name was mentioned as Easter, Esther and Hester is evidently a mispelling of her name on different documents or by transcribers. Most use the name Esther as her actual name. Notes the three paragraphs below from Donald Wilson on Dec 21 2004 1737 His name is found on the Brent Town survey of 1737, showing him to have a leasehold inside that tract. His house is shown on the plat within the division belonging to Samuel HAYWARD. When I transcribed the map almost 20 years ago I was not familiar with the local names, and I read "Wm. Kern[']s" (a name otherwise unknown). It should read "Wm. Thorn[']s". This map explains the fact that William THORN is included on the 1747 tithable list which only includes residents WEST of Cedar Run. He would not be on that list if he was living on his tract EAST of Cedar Run (the 897 acre tract). So, sometime before 1737, William THORN was granted a lease to some land within the Brent Town tract. (Probably for lives, it would expire when he, his wife and a third named relative died.) This may be where he was living at the time of the 1724 tobacco tenders survey. The lease is not recorded in Prince William County (1731-37). Nor is it found in surviving Stafford County deeds 1699-1709 or 1722-28. It might have been recorded in one of the intervening periods (1709-22 or 1728-31, probably the former). Since the official recorded copy is lost, it might be worth searching out the papers of the partners who owned the Brent Town tract. Am not aware of any collection that has those papers, but by searching for the Foote, Brent, Hayward and Bristow family archives, something might turn up. Something to consider. 1738/39 Rent Rolls for Prince William County WILLIAM THORN 897 acres FEB 28 1742 - Bond of WILLIAM THORN and THOMAS HARRISON the younger Gent., unto the Worshipful the Gentlemen Justices. For 400 (?) WILLIAM THORN is guardian of JOHN ORIAR AND DANIEL ORIAR,orphans. These are sons of Daniel O'Rear born abt 1710 - who was the son of John O"Rear and Mary Peck O'Rear-Thorn. So these are step grandchildren of WILLIAM THORN. Some have their mother Esther O'Rear as being WILLIAM THORN'S daughter as well. This is not proven by any documents other than William mentioned as Father in Law to Daniel O'Riar in his will. Again, this probably meant step father and would dispell the belief that Esther was William's daughter. 1747 - Tithable List Prince William County (western Dettingem Parish) WILLIAM THORN ,with slaves JACK, JEFFRIE and MOLL - 4 tithables (white men and slaves over age 16) . William had no living sons listed suggests he had no sons born to him that were of age at this time. John was born after this date as well. Aug 22 1748. THOMAS WHITLEDGE of Hamilton Parish ,Prince William Co Va,gent. to WILLIAM THORNE of same parish, gent. 116 acres on Cedar Run, Goose Run, {Prince William Co Deed Book L,p. 64-65,from abstract by Ruth and Sam Sparacio} Nov 26 1753. JOHN METCALF and WILLIAM THORN securities for JOHN SUMMERS and ELIZABETH SUMMERS administrators for JOHN FARROW deceased. {Prince WIlliam Co Bond Book 1753-1782}. Elizabeth is a daughter to William's wife Sarah as mentioned in Sarah Wilson's will 1786. May 25 1761. Administration bond issued to SARAH THORN,administratrix of WILLIAM THORN ,deceased; Henry PEYTON and EDWARD G WATKINS ,Her securities. Bond is set at 1500 pounds current money. The size of the bond is reflected in the size of the estate. The bond has original signatures. {Prince William Co Bond Book 1753-1782} William evidently died shortly before this date. Nov 23 1761. The Inventory and Appraisement of the Estate of WILLIAM THORN,decd, was returned and ordered to be recorded. {Order Book 1761-63 p.37,from abstract by Ruth and Sam Sparacio} May 4 1762. (Scire facias = to renew a judgment after some time has elapsed) (Ato Zax,by Barbara J Evans, pg. 233) May 4 1762. SARAH THORN, Administratrix of WILLIAM THORN,decd, exhibited an Account against the Decedent's Estate to which she made Oath and the same being examined by the court is allowed and ordered to be recorded. {Sparacio ibid.., 113} May 4 1762. SARAH THORN is appointed Guardian to John Thorn and Frances Carter,Orphans, who with WILLIAM ELLZEY Gent. and RICHARD CARTER entered into and executed Bond for her faithful performance. {ibid p. 114} July 10 1762. The Defendant pleads payment and that there is no such Record which the Plantiff joins, the Trial of which is referred until next Court {lbid., pg.242} Sept 9 1762. WILLIAM THORN'S Administratrix,Plantiff vs. RICHARD RIXEY, Defendant in case.... Plantiff to recover 248 lbs. of tobacco assessed against the Defendant and GILES CARTER, his common bail, and also her costs expended. {lbid., p. 322}. Oct 5 1762. SARAH THORN ,Administratrix of WILLIAM THORN ,decd, Plantiff vs. RICHARD RIXEY, Defendant. On Scirefacias. This day came the parties by their Attorneys and by consent withdrew the Plea and issue joined in this suit and refer the same to the Court, and on hearing the arguments of the parties, Judgment is granted the Plantiff against the Defendant for 5 shillings and 10. {lbid., p. 356} Prince William County Court, 8 April 1763: "RENO & c. agt. THORN. John RENO & c Complainants agt. John THORN, Defendant. In Chancery. The Complainants filed their Bill and on the motion of the Deft. Time is given him untill next Court to answer the same." [From abstract by Ruth and Sam Sparacio] This appears to be a chancery (equity) suit to determine shares of an estate, apparently the estate of William THORN. We are not necessarily talking about land here. There could very well be personal property (slaves, livestock, household goods, financial paper) that would need to be divided among all William THORN's children. The RENOs are suing the heir-at-law to recover their share. Primogeniture determines that land would descend to the eldest son (the heir at law), but personal property should be divided equally among all the decedent's children, male and female. This suit certainly suggests that Susannah RENO had a claim on that estate. The most I can say is that this entry is good supporting evidence that Susannah RENO was a daughter of William THORN. Donald L. Wilson, Virginiana Librarian May 2 1763. An additional Inventory of Appraisement of the Estate of WILLIAM THORN deceased, was returned and admitted to record. {lbid., p. 499} Rent rolls for Prince William Co show WILLIAM THORN 1735/6 - 897 acres 1738-9 - 897 acres 1747 - Tithable list (western Dettingen Parish) shows WILLIAM THORN with slaves Jack,Jeffrie and Moll-4 tithables 1751/2 - name not found 1753 - 900 acres 1754 - 900 acres 1760 - 900 acres 1761 - 900 acres 1762 - THORN, William decd, 900 acres 1767 - THORN, William decd, 900 acres ( 1 year arrears) 1773 - THORN, Jno of Wm's Exr. - 800 acres ( 1 year arrears) 1777 - THORN, John - 800 acres ( 5 year arrears) 1779 - THORN, John - 900 acres ( 1 year arrears) This clearly shows JOHN as WILLIAM THORN'S heir. Estate must have been settled between 1767 and 1773 after John turned 21 years of age. March 1-2 1771. JOHN THORN and wife MARY of Dettingen Parish ,Prince William County, sell to HAYDEN EDWARDS land purchased by WILLIAM THORN,father of JOHN , of THOMAS WHITLEDGE by Deeds 1748. 116 acres on Cedar Run,lower side of Goose Run. {Prince William County Deed Book R, p. 284-287. from Sparacio Abstract)This may account for the 100 acre reduction in John's inheritance. I am attempting to find the maiden name of Jean Leverett, wife of Thomas Leverett of Lunenburg Co., Va. Thomas Leverett dies in 1783 and by 1788 the sons and mother have moved to the Carolinas. Some researchers have stated she (Jean Leverett) was a Thorn before her marriage. Sister to Susannah Thorn who may have married George Hightower. George Hightower was (along with Jean, the wife) executor of Thomas Leverett's will in 1783 in Lunenburg. Thank you for considering my query. Charlotte Tucker

My Thorn ancestor was Rebecca Thorn(e) who married Isaac Overacre 30 Nov. 1790 in Frederick, VA. I would appreciate any information about her. Doug Burke
Barbara , Three of the four Thorns you mentioned were my THorn family. Isaac W Thorn was my great grandfather . John and Robert were his brothers. They actually bought land in Jackson Co and Vinton Co Ohio. But they are brothers. I wouldn't be surprised if Jacob wasn't related. He isn't a brother to any of my Thorn's as all of John Thorn b 1848 Va sons were mentioned in land transactions in Prince William Co Va where their father John gave them all land. I have always wondered about Jacob and maybe his relationship. He actually bought land in Jackson Co if I recall correctly. Have you tried the Va census in 1790 1800 1810 ? Keep in touch. Barbara, Do you know where in Va Jacob was born? My William Thorn (2) was born in Prince William Co and moved to Jackson Co Ohio (neighboring Ross Co) in 1817. His father was John born abt 1748 in Prince William Co and John's father was William (1) born abt 1685-90 in Va or England. Also ,what year was your Jacob born? The only way he would be connected to my line is if he were a brother to William 1685-90 or a nephew to William. The only son recorded for William b 1685-90 is John Thorn abt 1748. Hi Listers After a break of over 2 years I am taking up tracing my tree where I left off. I am looking for William Thorn(e) married to Judith ? born possibly Milford on Sea likely to be sometime prior to 1740 as they seem to appear in South Stoneham c1760. One particular line I am eager to trace is Susan Thorn daughter of William Thorn(e) and Lucy Moody born 1838. I would dearly love to find out more information about this ancestor. Look forward to your replies Andrew Thorn

I finally found the entire line I was looking for, the ancestors of Emily C[leveland] Thorne (1877-1968) and Cleveland May Thorne (1883-bef 1934). Their immigrant ancestor was William Thorne (ca 1617- bet 1657 & 1664) who immigrated to Mass. Bay Colony (adm. freeman 1638) and removed to Jamaica, NY. The entire line of his descendants can be found at http://thorn.pair.com/williamthorne1/d48.htm#P48 which link is still valid (checked it tonight to be sure). I saved only the line leading to the individuals I was interested in, but there is much more in the tree. I identified the father of Emily and Cleveland through the censuses for Yonkers, NY, in 1880 and 1900. This led me to the web site given above, where I found the rest of the line. I have not checked this tree myself, but the work appears to be solid (the Thornes are not in my family tree; the family in Yonkers were just very good friends of some of my direct ancestors). Anyone researching Thornes who may have come from Long Island could find this web site very instructive. Nice to have a stone wall overturned every now and then.... G. David Thayer Sarasota, FL USA
