Below is information on Daniel Wade Thorn, hopefully some names will ring a bell. Daniel Wade Thorn, b. abt. 1818, m. Sarah Caroline Green, daughter of Wesley Green and Katherine Gentry. Their children were: 1. John Wesley Thorn 2. Delilah Jane Thorn 3. Sarah A. Thorn 4. Thomas Henderson Thorn 5. rosanna Gentry Thorn 6. Evaline Thorn 7. Daniel J. Thorn 8. Mary A.. Thorn 9. William W. Thorn 10. Heneretta Kiswel Thorn 11. Nancy Thorn 12. Esther Thorn Can anyone help me with my William. I have been trying for 40 years to find his roots. Sue Hall Mills
Hello All, I am glad that someone started this roll call. As the list owner, it is something I used to do regularly, but have let slide for the past year or two. The info presented here by various people will hopefully allow others to find a connection. My THORN line begins in Gloucester County, VA and moves through VA over time through several Martin Thorns. It is probable that the American line began with a William Thorn who arrived in Gloucester, VA from England aboard The Safety (in 1635). He had sons, Martin and William, who showed up in Surry County, VA after William I's will was probabated. It is possible to follow Martin I though Martin II and Martin III, then the line gets lost for awhile. These early Thorns had the annoying habit of naming all of their sons Martin and William and with so few records surviving, it is easy to lose one's way and to not to know whether you are following the correct line. They are, without a doubt, inter-related. I am descended from Theophilus Thorn of Spartanburg District, South Carolina. THEOPHILUS THORNE was born 1774-1784 in (probably) Edgecomb County, North Carolina, and died 1847 in Spartanburg District, SC. He married JENNIE POPE. Theophilus was most probably the son of William Thorn and Mary Taylor. This must be the Theophilus who is mentioned in a abstract of Edgecombe County, NC deed: DB12-206---William THORN, Beady POPE, WInifred ROBERTSON, Theophilus THORN, Martin THORN, Taylor THORN, Mary POPE, and Elizabeth THORN sold a tract of land jointly; the deed was also signed by Hardy POPE Wiley ROBERTSON, and Dempsey POPE, Jan 28, 1806. (NOTE: Theophilus did not sign the deed, indicating that he had already left Edgecombe County, NC. He is found in Spartanburg District, SC in a property transaction in 1804). William THORN, Theophilus' father, was probably the son of another Martin Thorn , one of three that coexisted in Edgecombe County. This Martin left his property to grandson, Martin, who he was probably the oldest of William and Mary's sons. My papers on the early Thorns are in somewhat of a disarray. I haven't worked on them lately but had sorted out what I thought had happened up to Theophilus arriving in Spartanburg District. However, that paper is missing and the copy that was on my computer was wiped out in a crash a few years back. I will try to reconstruct that and post it here later. From Theophilus in South Carolina I am sure that what I have is correct. I am posting below what I have on William Thorn and Mary Taylor's family and on Theophilus Thorn and Jenny Pope's family. I am just posting one generation for each. If any of you connect with any of this, let me know and I will fill you in on what else I have. 1. WILLIAM THORNE was born Bef. 1775 in Virginia, and died Aft. 1800 in Edgecombe County, NC. He married MARY TAYLOR, daughter of WILLIAM TAYLOR and MARY BATTLE. Children of WILLIAM THORNE and MARY TAYLOR are: 2. i. THEOPHILUS THORNE, b. 1774-1784, ?North Carolina; d. 1847, Spartanburg District, SC. ii. WILLIAM THORNE. iii. BEADY THORNE, m. (______) POPE. iv. WINNIFRED THORNE, m. WILIE ROBERTSON. v. MARTIN THORNE. 3. vi. TAYLOR THORNE, b. November 30, 1782. vii. MARY THORNE, m. (______) POPE. 4. viii. ELIZABETH A. THORNE, b. 1785; d. 1880; ----------------------------------------------------------------------- THEOPHILUS2 THORNE (WILLIAM1) was born 1774-1784 in ?North Carolina, and died 1847 in Spartanburg District, SC. He married JENNIE POPE. Notes for THEOPHILUS THORNE: Theophilus was most probably the son of William Thorn and Mary Taylor. This must be the Theophilus who is mentioned in a abstract of Edgecombe County, NC deed: DB12-206---William THORN, Beady POPE, WInifred ROBERTSON, Theophilus THRON, Martin THRON, Taylor THORN, Mary POPE, and Elizabeth THORN sold a tract of land jointly; the deed was also signed by Hardy POPE Wiley ROBERTSON, and Dempsey POPE, Jan 28, 1806. This is most probably land that the eight brothers and sisters inherited from their mother. The two POPE men are probably the husbands of Mary and Beady. These men were most probably brothers of Jennie POPE. We know that Theophilus was in Spartanburg District by the early 1800s. He is mentioned in two land transactions as documented in Spartanburg County/District South Carolina Deed Abstracts Books A-T, 1785-1827. (1)Book P, p. 399-400, Feb. 27,1804--He is a witness to the sale of land from George Poole to David Pope (Jennie's brother?). (2) Book Q,p. 109-110, Dec. 12, 1817---bought land from John McBee. Witnesses were Elizabeth [likely his sister) and her husband, Whitney Hines. More About THEOPHILUS THORNE: Buried: Near present Arrowood Baptist Church Notes for JENNIE POPE: Family legend from some older family members says that Jennie Pope was a recent immigrant from Ireland. I feel it is more likely that Jennie Pope was a member of the Pope Family that was prominent in Edgecombe County, NC in the mid to late 1700s. She is likely related to the POPE men who married Theophilus THORN's sisters. Children of THEOPHILUS THORNE and JENNIE POPE are: 5. i. EDWIN THORNE, b. October 15, 1799, Spartanburg District, SC; d. July 20, 1868, Spartanburg District, SC. 6. ii. FRANCES THORNE, b. June 25, 1807, Spartanburg District , SC; d. June 25, 1843, Henry County, GA. 7. iii. THEOPHILUS THORNE, b. 1810; d. January 04, 1860, Hempstead, Ark. 8. iv. NATHANIEL THORNE, b. March 22, 1811, Spartanburg District , SC; d. May 24, 1885, Forest City, NC. v. MARTHA THORNE, b. Abt. 1812; d. Deceased; m. SYLVESTER C. COLLINS, December 31, 1837. 9. vi. MARY THORNE, b. Abt. 1815; d. 1863. vii. BETSY THORNE, b. Unknown; d. Deceased; m. GEORGE GARNER. viii. JANE THORNE, b. Unknown; d. Deceased; m. JESSI RHODES. ix. INFANT SON THORNE, b. Unknown; d. Deceased. I am descended from Edwin Thorn and Ann Garner Moreland, daughter of James Moreland and Mary Garner. I have a great deal more info on these families if it will help anyone. I do know that sons of Theophilus went to Georgia, Arkansas and North Carolina. I haven't followed these lines, but do have some info on them. Pam Reid

Would anyone happen to have any info on the parents of Annabel Jean Thorne; Arthur Ward Thorne and Edna Phoebe Neal. The parents said she had 2 living siblings. Annabel Jean Thorne was born on 11 April 1935 at St. Thomas Hospital, in Summit County Ohio. Her father is listed as born in Meade PA, age 38 on last birthday (born abt 1897). Residence is listed as Route # 6, Akron, Ohio. He had been employed as a laborer at Colonial Glass Works, Cameron, WV. He worked there for 6 months. He last worked in Oct 1934. Her mother is listed as born Norfolk VA, age 36 on her last birthday (born abt 1899), worked at housework in own home. I can not find any data on them on the Internet that is a good match. Searched the web, Ancestry, Rootsweb, and FamilySearch. http://geonames.usgs.gov/pls/gnis/web_query.gnisprod?f_name=Meade&vari ant=N&f_state=Pennsylvania&f_cnty=&f_ty=populated+place&elev1=&elev2=& cell=&pop1=&pop2=&my_function=Send+Query&last_name=&last_state=&last_c nty=&page_cnt=&record_cnt=&tab=Y shows two towns that might match the "Meade, PA" given for the birth place of Arthur Ward Thorne. Meade Heights, Dauphin county, PA Meadetown, York county, PA One possible match for Arthur is a FamilySearch pedigree chart for Arthur Thorne, born abt 1897, <of York, York, PA>. That Arthur's father is listed as Edward D. Thorne, born 1869, <of York, York, PA>. An alternate name for Edward could be Edward D. Throne. That Arthur's mother is listed as Alice McClure, born abt 1873, <of York, York, PA>. I am researching Annabel Jean Thorne's ancestry for her and her husband, who are our friends. Jay
From: "Lisa Thorn" <lathorn@ovis.net> Subject: Thorn, Charles Co., MD - Monongalia Co., VA/WV - Tyler Co., VA/WV > Children of Thomas Thorn and Rachel Unknown are: > 12 i. Thomas Thorn, born February 03, 1766. It looks like this could be a match for Hezekiah Thorn in my tree. Hezekiah named one of his sons Ephraim. The birth and death dates match also. Great, this adds a little more to my line if all is correct. Roll Call was a good idea. Brenda Collins
I am looking for the family of Matilda Thorn b. Dec 1852 in PA, probably Philadelphia. She was reputed to have lived, as a child, in Plainfield (NJ or PA?). According to her death certificate, she was born on 10 Dec 1852 and her parents were Edward Thorn and Anny Freeman. In the census, the parents were both born in PA. In November 1868, just before she turned 16, she married Lawrence Mead, a famine Irish immigrant, in Brooklyn, NY, according to her application for her deceased husband's Civil War pension. I have never found her in the 1860 census, never found her marriage in Brooklyn and never found her parents anywhere. She is truely a Thorn in my side. Frank
Hi All My Thorne family as far as I can trace, go back to Buckland Newton, Dorset, England. To David Thorne Bn 1800.....father believed to be William no proof so stuck just there. Can follow right through direct line to myself Thomas Thorne. It seems we have moved 15 miles? Tom Boletused@aol.com wrote: Our Thorne/Thorn line is originally from Germany. They settled in York County, PA around 1770. In the early 1800s or possible 1790 they traveled to Jeffersontown, Ky with a large party of other German families. The descendants are still in that area at this time. Paulina

The Drake line was the line I was researching. My DRAKEs were from NC to Greene Co., IN. They were listed in a publication of Southern marriages in Greene Co. and all 5 of the known children of Simon and Patience Gregory Drake were listed as married in Greene Co. and from NC. Included with them was Alley Drake married to Andrew Thorn in Lawrence Co. A surprise. Why was she listed in this particular group? Then I found 6 slashmarks representing Drake children in NC census and surmised she must have been the eldest and the extracter knew it. The rest seems to fit. She was listed as head of hiousehold in the 1840 Parke Co. IN census as Alley Thorn. She married in Parke Co., IN Riley Brown in 1841. And that's it. The two daughters she had with Andrew Thorn are lost to history, just 2 slash marks on the 1840 census. Shirley Maynard

Here is what I have on my website regarding our Thorne/Thorn line. Paulina Our Thorne Ancestors Our first Thorne ancestor was Peter Thorne. He passed away in Jeffersontown, Kentucky in 1798. We think he was probably buried on the farm on Chenoweth Run. Peter came to America from Germany in 1769. He arrived in Philadelphia in October on a ship named the Crawford. There were 20 other young german men. The ships register can be found in the Strassberg books in most large librarys. A large group of germans came from York County, Pennsylvania to Jeffersontown in 1795. On February 1st, 1797 Peter bought 60 acres on Chenoweth Run from Simon Pottorf/Bottorf. (JCDB 4-450) and was taxed on the 60 acres and 1 horse in 1797. Administration of his estate was granted his widow, Mary, on August 7, 1798. John Miller, Peter Hause, Martin Reisinger and John Stucky were order to appraise his estate. (JCCOMB 5-126) His heirs sold 60 acres on Chenoweth Run to John Woolet on 15 March 1815. (JCDB1-254) The Next Generation The children of Peter Thorne are; 1. Henry Thorne d 1844, m Priscilla Hause, dtr of Peter Hause. 2. Lydia Thorne 3. Meantime... here is the information for my Thorn connection... We have an Anthony Thorne but not married to a Constance. I mistakenly said his wife was a Brentlinger but his son John was married to the Brentlinger. I am at the coast and all my info is at our home in Portland. Our Anthony had two wives. Will see what I can find and send correct information later.
Our Thorne/Thorn line is originally from Germany. They settled in York County, PA around 1770. In the early 1800s or possible 1790 they traveled to Jeffersontown, Ky with a large party of other German families. The descendants are still in that area at this time. Paulina
Some of our Thornes moved to Lawrence County, Indiana in the very early 1800s. I don't have my records with me but I think they were the children and grandchildren of Anthony Thorne who was married to Rebecca Brentlinger. They came from Louisville, KY. Could your Andrew have been part of this line? Paulina
