    3. A good resource for descendants of the William Thorne who was a freeman in Lynn, Mass., and moved on to Flushing, Long Island: "Early History of the THORNE Family of Long Island" by Thorn Dickinson; microfilm of manuscript to be presented to NYG&BS; Family History Library Catalog #0940271, it.10 microfilm of typescript; the ink had spread and some letters became undistinguishable; some pages had darkened to the point where the top lines could not be read. BUT this is the only source that has much in the way of documentation!!! There is quite a bit on the members of the family who moved north into "mainland" New York, and others who went west into New Jersey. And an interesting accounting of the divorce of Susannah (Booth) Thorne from her 2nd husband, William Hallett

    3. I am searching for the parents of a Martin Thorn/Thorne who was born between 1784 and 1794 and migrated to Marettia Ohio. In 1806 he married a Mary "Polly" Williams. They had at least four children: Wm, born 1807, Delila, born 1809, David, born 1811, and an unknown child born at an unknown time, but died in 1816 in Marettia. Martin died in Nov, 1815 in somewhere near Marettia and Mary remarried a Zadock Dickerson in 1817. I have traced the family from that time period to the present day, unfortunately, I can not place Martin anywhere further. In the 1870 and 1880 census, David and Wm, stated their father is from Vermont and mother from Wales, Mary Williams was from Wales, so I am assuming that Martin was born in Vermont. Any help will be appreciated. Elaine Day elainejd50@hotmail.com --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? New and Improved Yahoo! Mail - 100MB free storage!

    3. Elmer, and others, The decendants of william Thorn(e)c.1617 of NY do cover the entire country, actually starting in MA. They migrated slowly from NY to NJ, PA, VA and so on. The PA Thorn(e)'s went to MD, Ohio and WV and elsewhere including Canada. the VA lines went from there to all over the South and South West. I find it interesting that my Thorne and Chew lines both take the paths west but I have yet to find a connection between the two although they wound up in the same towns and counties. Also, when researching the Thorne name be sure to search by both Thorne & Thorn. I have lines where the name gose back and forth, some where siblings pelled it differently. If you have not done so check out this Thorne website: http://thorn.pair.com/ This site has tons of information and a family forum as well. My particular line ws a tough one to connect, but after getting acces to the census records and Philadelphia PA business directories I was able to connect things and dates. (I'm #3274 in the William Thorne line). One interesting thing I found in my research of the Thornes was that in the late 1840,s and early 1850's one family was in Dublin Indiana at the Quaker Church. In the the 1990's my sister joined that very same church. John

    3. I agree a lot of Thorne's came to Canada who were loyalists. Please if you think this may be check the loyalist records. They had to make a sworn statement that they were loyal to the Queen and these records are quite useful. Most of these Thorn/Thorne's settled in the Maritimes (Nova Scotia, New Brunswick etc.) My Thorne's (my GGGrandpa is Albert Thorne - on the 1871 & 1881 census records in Guelph Ontario. He is living with his siblings - not his parents and it lists that they were born in the Jersey Isles and they were all barbers. The last time I started researching in Jersey - (I hadn't gone very far) but I did find thorne's that were barbers - just hadn't found the exact connection. Albert's parents are listed as John Thorne & Mary Ann Masters on his marriage record that I found. <<<Elmer, and others, The decendants of william Thorn(e)c.1617 of NY do cover the entire country, actually starting in MA. 3. The following comes from web site Descendants of William Thorne from: http://thorn.pair.com/williamthorne1/d48.htm#P48 William Thorne was born about 1617 in England. He was admitted freeman on 2 May 1638 in the Massachusetts Bay Colony. He died between 1657 and 1664 in Jamaica, Queens, NY. He signed the Remonstrance on 27 Dec 1657 in Flushing, Long Island, NY. "Another of the combination father and son signers of the Remonstrance was the Thorne family; William Sr. and William Jr." Like so many of his friends and neighbors William Thorne Sr. followed the pathway to Flushing in order to escape the religious intolerances of his earlier New England associations. The first New England reference to William Thorne is that of his admittance as a freeman to Lynn, Massachusetts on May 2, 1638 having (possibly) arrived that year in the ship Confidence from England. (But he is not on the published passenger list of that ship.) He is also shown to have served on a Salem jury on June 29, 1641. Shortly thereafter he was convicted of giving assistance to escaped prisoners and was fined 6 & 2/3 shillings for "concealing, hiding and supplying." This display of sympathy toward non-conformists and antipathy toward existing authorities presaged an early departure from the Massachusetts Bay Colony. ___________________ There is a lot more on William Thorne, but the above serves to illustrate that he came from England to New England about 1638 and was a resident of Lynn, Mass. Bay Colony, prior to removing to Flushing/Jamaica, Queens, NY, for religious reasons. The Thornes of Long Island and lower New York State seem to be descendants of this person. Some of his descendants removed to Yonkers, Westchester, NY, and northern NJ. G. David Thayer Salem, OR USA

    3. From reading the roll call responses it sounds like there were threeor four different Thorn/Thorne families that arrived in America. The New York Family The New Jersey/Maryland/Virginia Family The Pennsylvania Family. Maryland Virginia and New Jersey Thorns's may have been different also. Does anyone else see this as possible? I had always thought that I had to trace back to William Thorn in New York but now I am thinking my line came dirrectly to Maryland/Virginia from England. It appears that most of the New York Thorns stayed in New York with exceptions of maybe one going to West Virginia. Someone set me straight on this please. I think it would help all of us to know the different Thorns and their arrivals in America. I know that WIlliam Thorn arrived in New York in 1600's. Does anyone else have info on other Thorns arriving in Pennsylvania or Maryland/Virginia? Please post any info on any Thorns that you know of arriving in America from any other country. Thanks and have a great day! Elmer thorn

    2. Thanks for the roll call. I really appreciate the opportunity to compare notes. My line is Perry W. W. Thorne, born approximately 1850 in Tennessee. Perry married Martha Ann Richardson from Missouri and they settled in Trinity County, TX in the late 1870's. GGrandpa Perry's full name was Perry Wayne Wesley Thorn. His parents were James Thorn, born about 1803 in SC and Susan McClintock. They were in Hickman County, Kentucky in 1860. From what I'm following from other researchers, James Thorn's father was possibly John Thorn born about 1773 in Maryland. Wife Rebecca born about 1775 in NC; John died in Dickson County, Tennessee. John Thorn's parents were Benjamin Thorn born about 1733 in MD and wife Amelia Artis Swann. His father: James Thorn born about 1704 in Maryland; wife Susannah Burch Does this line sound familiar to anyone? I haven't much, but willing share anything I have to help. 3. The following is all I have on my grandfather. My Thorne line pretty well begins and ends with him, as there are no male descendants with the name. Dorris Alma (D.A.) Thorne - According to 4 children's birth certificates was born in Pennsylvania. Married Birdie Dryden Smith b.25 Sept 1894 Memphis, Shelby Co. ,TN. d. 2 Feb 1971 in Memphis, TN. Children of Dorris Thorne and Birdie Smith: 1. Elmore/Elmer Dorris/Smith Thorne b. 15 June 1914 in Memphis, TN. d. 30 Apr. 1916 in Memphis, TN. On Elmore's birth cert. Dorris is listed as being 25 yrs. old and a machinist. 2. Elmer Mathews Thorne b. 26 June 1916 in Memphis, TN. d. 18 June 1977 in Memphis, TN. On Elmer's birth cert. Dorris is listed as being 27 yrs. old and a clerk. 3. Loraine Thorne b.31 Aug. 1919 in Memphis, TN. d.1 Oct. 2002 in Millington, Shelby Co., TN. On Loraine's birth cert. Dorris is listed as residence unknown with no age or occupation. 4. Lloyd Thorne (my father) b. 24 Nov. 1924 in Memphis, TN. d. 14 Aug. 1967 in Fresno, Fresno Co., CA. On Lloyd's birth cert. Dorris is listed as being 38 yrs. old and an auto mechanic. None of the children ever knew their father. Given the dates per the birth certs. in would have been born about 1885 in PA. My father was given up for adoption at age 3 mo. and was given another name legally. Birdie was remarried before June 1937 when she applied for a social security #. Have been unable to find any record of birth, marriage or death for my grandfather. There is no doubt he was my grandfather as the only picture we have of him shows he is a duplicate of my father, or I should say my father is a duplicate of him. I found my father's sister a few years before her death and was able to meet her. I am very intrigued by my grandfather and would love to get any information on his ancestry and possible other family members. He may have remarried and had other children. It was my fathers desire to know who his familly was, and it became my desire as welI. I carried out that desire as best as I have been able. But the Thorne line has been very elusive. I would LOVE to get any new information to help me find my family. Thank You, Sandi Williams Madera, CA.
