Hi, I figured I would see if anyone has any info on some Thorne families from Philadelphia Pa that could be related to my "Philly" area Thorne's. The fisrt is as follows: Age as listed in 1880 Census Walter R Thorn 45 Painter Susan (??) 35 Housewife Anna R Thorn 17 School Emma R. Thorn 15 School Samuel R Thorn 13 School Walter R. Thorn 9 School This family all of the children were given the middle initial "R" just as in my family around that time. In our family it was for "Rogers" after their grandmother Hannah Inskeep Rogers. None of my known Thorn(e)s had a Walter in that timeframe though. John
Hi everyone, My name is Melvyn THORN, Born 30/04/1944, in Nottingham, England. I have been doing my family tree now for 17 years and have got back as far as a Joshua THORN who moved to Somerset, England in about 1700. All his children and the next generations remained in Somerset until about 1880 when they began to disperse through England and Wales. My wife Pauline, and myself have been trying for the past 10 years to trace where Joshua came from to Somerset but to date without success. As indicated in a number of the groups e-mails you do have to look at Thorn & Thorne but also Thorns. I notice from one of the e-mails that THORN came from Ireland and Scotland, but they also originate in Germany and Holland. There is still a small town called THORN in Holland and upto 1946 at the end of the second world war there was a city called THORN in Germany, which was renamed TORUN after the new borders were decided and it became part of East Germany. According to the Family History experts and teachers in England, THORN is a multi-derivative name and there will be many branches of Thorns that will not be connected to each other. The THORN surname is very common over the South-Western Counties of Devon, Dorset, Somerset and Wiltshire and this is where the majority of the British Thorns originated from. I do also know that there are Thorns in Scandinavia. I have an access data base with over a thousand Thorn(e)s on it, and still adding to it (All British side I'm afraid). Hope this is of some use to you all. Mel

My William Thorn arrived in Gloucester, VA in 1635 aboard the ship The Safety. That ship sailed from England, but I haven't been able to trace William to his place of origin. I am the daughter of a Thorne and in my research have found that the "e" was added by my g-g-g-grandfather, William Taylor Thorne (b. November 08, 1829, Spartanburg District, SC; d. May 26, 1916, Spartanburg District, SC.). Prior to him, all of the records (even tombstones) use Thorn. William Taylor Thorne and his father Edwin Thorn (b. October 15, 1799, Edgecombe County, NC; d. July 20, 1868, Spartanburg District, SC.) are even buried in the same cemetery. William Taylor Thorne's Civil War records spell the name Thorn, so I am not sure when he actually added the "e". Hi All My Thorn is fairly recent and a brick wall. John T was born c 1802-5 in Yorkshire according to 1841 census. He married Sarah Edson of Spofforth Yorks in Knaresborough Yorks in 1828. Unfortunately he died in 1848 so I do not have any census entry which gives his full place of birth and so far have been unable to find any suitable candidate in any parish records. This list seem to be mainly US Thorns but if any of you should have any info .......... Cheers Jean
Elmer... It has always been my contention, albeit difficult to convince the "pervailing" authority, that not all Thorn(e)s in America are decendents of William Thorn... If we read our history a bit better we will see that the surname THORN/THORNE has both Irish and English/Scottish roots, and as you know these two countries have never considered each other "blood family"... My Thorn(e) considers itself to evolve from Orange Irish roots, ie. anti-Church of England, and could quite possibly have come over at a different time than popular belief dictates... I had always thought that I had to trace back to William Thorn in New York but now I am thinking my line came dirrectly to Maryland/Virginia from England. It appears that most of the New York Thorns stayed in New York with exceptions of maybe one going to West Virginia. Someone set me straight on this please. I think it would help all of us to know the different Thorns and their arrivals in America. I know that WIlliam Thorn arrived in New York in 1600's. Does anyone else have info on other Thorns arriving in Pennsylvania or Maryland/Virginia? Please post any info on any Thorns that you know of arriving in America from any other country. > Thanks and have a great day! > Elmer thorn >
I also found a WIlliam Thorn born in Dorset,England in 1693 that ended up in Prince William Co Va. He wouldn't have been from the Thorns in New york since he was born in England after they came to America. This was on www.Ancestry.com . There has to be more. Et
Shirley, Thanks for the tidbit or should I say large nugget maybe. Hope all goes well with your surgery. I hope someone has a copy of this book. John, Thanks for the info. I did find that in my Thorn family some used the "e" and some didn't - yes and even siblings . I have a cousin that still has the Thorn Homestead in Ohio using the "e" on his name. We thought at first that we weren't related.
