GOT A REAL POZER FOR YOU... Is there anyone out there who has been connecting the dots as far as the Smiths of Brimfield, MA, are concerned. I have the copy of the internments, but can't seem to get a foot-hold on who belongs to whom... At issue is Mrs. Lucy Smith marrying a Thomas Ellenwood [C.R. June 3, 1784] April 23, 1784. Just who is this Lucy Smith connected to? I have my suspicions, and if correct, it would mean a great deal to have them supported. Almost, exactly two years later, daughter Mary "Polly" Smith, marries, Solomon Thompson: Jul 13, 1786, son of James Thompson and Mary Hancock [wd, Nathaniel Hitchock] of Brimfield, late of Woburn... Back to Thomas...he was married to 1. Abigail King, 2. Mary Thompson, 3. Mrs. Lucy Smith... Mary was Solomon's aunt, Lucy was Solomon's mother-in-law. MOTIVE: Being an obsessive, I am bogged down. I can't get this darn Smith business clarified, I'm, stuck on this stage. If you have access to ancestry.com or some other pay service, for which I am unable to belong to, I am looking for a Lucy Smith [wd] of Brimfield, MA. Now this is not as easy as it seems. 1. Lucy [bc May 27, 1741] is really Lucy Lynde, d/o Samuel Lynde and Lucy Lamb of Leicester, MA [md. Oct 09, 1740] 2. she marries Nathaniel Smith of Leicester, MA...[bc Sep 16, 1738; md Aug 14, 1762] 3. they had five children, somewhere!!!! as evidenced in the 1772 Census for Guilford, VT/NY http://www.genealogy-quest.com/collections/nyguilford.html where there is a Nath'l Smith, wife and five children. Along with them there is a Daniel Lynde, a wife and 4 children. Daniel Lynde is the uncle of Nathaniel's wife, Lucy Lynde Smith. 4. one of which is "my" Polly Smith, the other four are unfound as of yet 5. she married Solomon Thompson in Brimfield, MA [bc Nov 23, 1760; md Jul 13, 1786] 6. BUT!... Nathaniel and Lucy disappear from Leicester, MA, and turn up in the 1771/2 Census for Guilford, VT/NY above... 7. this is a tumultuous time when VT, MA, NH and NY are fighting over who is going to get that part of the wilderness as part of their state...so we have a conflict between two groups, the Yorkers and the Sufferers 8. the Smiths are in the middle of it 9. each side trying to out do the other in records destruction...for eight years!!! 10. Polly was born c 1764, so she would have been about seven-eight years old at the time of the Guilford census 11. Polly marries Solomon back in Brimfield, in July 13, 1786, 14 years after the census and at the ae 22 years 12. where were Polly and her family during those "lost years" VT, NYS, MA? 13. and, how is it that Polly is back in Brimfield...what has happened in the space of those 12 years??? Where is Nathaniel? 14. we also find a Lucy Smith, [wd] marrying a Thomas Ellinwood, back in Brimfield, Jun 03, 1784...just two years before her daughter...SAME TOWN, SAME CHURCH... there is an Ellenwood in Brattleborough, did she return to Brimfield with his party...as there are few Ellenwoods to be found anywhere... 15. I can find nothing to identify this Lucy Smith [wd] as the original Lucy Lynde that md Nathaniel Smith, so I must assume until then, that she is the one I am looking for... 16. Lucy Smith [ae 43] md Thomas Ellinwood [bc Aug 01, 1728/mdc Jun 03, 1784; ae 56], and is his third wife 17. guess who his second wife was...and who just so happens to have connections back to the Thompsons, MARY THOMPSON, Solomon's aunt!!! 18. so Lucy is now, Solomon's aunt and mother-in-law! ...if my assumptions have merit... one big happy family 19. but what happened to Nathaniel, Polly's father, and Lucy's husband? ...his death cannot be found anywhere... 20. these were the Revolutionary war years...was he a soldier? ...was he killed? ...no evidence for such can be found 21. and since Polly and her mother are living in, or near, Brimfield, the other children must have been there as well...some probably already married, more than likely they are all married, but to whom? 22. assuming the children were ...using the LDS figures... .....born........ 1762/3, 1764/5 [Polly], 1766/7, 1768/9, 1770/1 females md....1782/3, 1784/5>1786], 1786/7, 1788/9, 1790/1 males md.......1786/7, 1788/9..........., 1790/1, 1792/3, 1794/5 23. are there children? fitting this year sequence? md, whose parents are Nathaniel Smith and Lucy [Lynde] Smith? Bottom line, I'd like to find the children, etc.. Were they left in Brattleborough/Guilford as they came of age and settled down, or did they return to Brimfield, MA with their mother? If you care to assist, and need more information, please ask... Kindest regards, Al
