There were definite Thomasons, Thomasen, Thomassons, Thoms, etc. from Nordic countries/Dutch/Ireland, Wales, and elsewhere. It's a patrynomic surname (a name based on the FIRST name of the father). Check out the links below for more infomation. Basically, patrynomic surnaming was the "norm" for all countries until surnames were "set" for one reason or another....
