I am originally from Perry County. My grandmother was Rosa Lee Clifton Matthews. Her mother was his daughter Catherine Kitty Thompson. . She told me that he was from a very educated family with a brother and or uncle who was a professor at University perhaps in Indiana. They called him Alphabet. He told stories of his civil war days as well. There is an 1860 census that show his dad John Davis and a J H Thompson household. I assume they were brothers. I always wondered why they would come down south. Considering his mother eats from a prominent family in Mass. Wondered if it caused conflict during civil war. Would be wonderful to know wouldn't it?
