Don't give up yet. I look specifically at WWII Military service on Ancestry and found what appear to be two Robert Samuel Thompsons. The first had a Service Number of 413-53-35 which I assume to be a SSN. The 413 SSN series was/is issued in Tennessee. This record has Robert Samuel Thompson enlisting on 11 Oct 1940 and first received onboard on 18 Oct 1940 with a ranking of USNR SK3cV6 (maybe a Navy man can tell you what this means). The second are several muster rolls for a Robert Samuel Thompson on the Yorktown (CV10) from 30 Nov 1944 to 25 Mar 1945. His SSN 234-33-33 and his rating on the first muster is ARM2c and on the last is ARM2c (CA). The 234 SSN series is from West Virginia. Perhaps with these SSNs you can figure out whether one of these is our father and trace down some more information about him.
